Package: dpkg
Version: 0.93.42

i install the basedisks, then install the base packanges with dpkg,
theninstall ncurses runtime. When i'm done, i type "dselect" and choose
to select a instalation method, ant it says "no instalation methods
available", which really sucks, seeing that you can't install without a
instalation method.

Someone somewhere has to have had at least one instalation method, or
the
package wouldn't have been distributed in the first place (how would you
test it?). so i would recomend hunting down whatever method exists, and
put it in dpkg-0.93.42.deb

i'm useing deb .93R5, as it was on the ftp site yesterday.

Someone other than Ian was writing installation methods and they were
in beta, if you really want to play with them you can get them
from ftp.cps.cmich.edu:/pub/debian/private/project/BETA/dpkg
file methods.tar.gz or something like that.

But the proper way of doing it at the moment is to use dselect to
select the files you want to install and then to use dpkg with some
options which I forget :) Never having used dselect to install I'm
not quite sure. I was quite happy using dpkg once Bruce gave us a hint
on how to use it easily using find.

You can, you need to do the job of the `installation method' yourself.
This is trivial - see
 dselect-install-instructions.txt
on the FTP site.

The installation methods are being worked on.

Andrew Howell writes ("Bug#971: dselect gives "no instalation methods
available""):

The dpkg options are:
  dpkg --unpack --no-also-select --auto
/path/to/directories/with/deb/files
                     ^^^^ nb not --auto
  dpkg --auto --configure

Andrew Howell writes ("Re: your mail"):

> then edit the packages file removing all the packages you don't want
> to install then
> dpkg --unpack `cat packages`

This is a rather tedious way of doing things.

Ian.
