bind-4.9.3-BETA17-1 apparently hasn't yet been converted to
sys-v init conventions. It installs the script in
/etc/rc.misc/named.

named and setserial are old packages which still use rc.misc

Package: bind
Version: 4.9.3-BETA17-1

(Debian release .93R5)

When I installed the bind package, no /etc/init.d file was
created or linked in the rc?.d directories. I created one
(not a particularily good one; it should really depend on
named.boot somehow, but I'm not going to think too hard
about it since I'm new to this game) and stuck it in.

Here is my /etc/init.d/named, in case it is useful.

--------8<--------
#!/bin/sh

test -f /usr/sbin/named || exit 0

case "$1" in
start)
  /usr/sbin/named &
  ;;
stop)
  /usr/bin/killall named
  ;;
*)      echo "Usage: /etc/init.d/named start|stop"; exit 1 ;;
esac
exit 0
