Nothing, in principle. It's just that the current implementation in
Perl makes &clean_up_a_bit hard to write in a way that makes it do
anything at all useful.

Umm, this is two bugs. Firstly, dpkg doesn't trap ^C (which I presume
is what you used to interrupt it), so auctex didn't get its status
updated. This isn't usually a serious problem, as doing a
reinstallation should fix it. It won't be fixed until the C version
of dpkg.

The second bug is in tar; we've seen it biting a number of times. tar
should overwrite symlinks, rather than moaning when it finds they
already exist and then exiting with a non-zero exit status.

Ian M. - can you fix this in tar, or get someone to do it ? It seems
it's more of a problem than I thought.

In the meantime, as a workaround, you should be able to manually
delete the links it is complaining about and then complete the
installation.

Ian.

Subject: dpkg 0.93.26 breaks after aborted install

After dpkg hung when "setting up" dvips (bug already reported by Ian
M.), it could no longer remove or install the package. For example,

# dpkg -r auctex-9.2y-1.deb
dpkg - error: auctex-9.2y-1.deb: is not installed, cannot remove
dpkg: 1 errors occurred.
# dpkg -i auctex-9.2y-1.deb
Unpacking ./auctex-9.2y-1.deb, containing auctex ...
tar: Could not create symlink to ../../../../etc/tex-site.el: File
exists
tar: Could not create symlink to GPL: File exists
dpkg-deb: subprocess tar returned error exit status 2
dpkg - error: auctex: failed to install (exit status 1)
dpkg: 1 errors occurred.

Shouldn't "dpkg -r" remove symlinks???

After dpkg hung when "setting up" dvips (bug already reported by Ian
M.), it could no longer remove or install the package. For example,

# dpkg -r auctex-9.2y-1.deb
dpkg - error: auctex-9.2y-1.deb: is not installed, cannot remove
dpkg: 1 errors occurred.
# dpkg -i auctex-9.2y-1.deb
Unpacking ./auctex-9.2y-1.deb, containing auctex ...
tar: Could not create symlink to ../../../../etc/tex-site.el: File
exists
tar: Could not create symlink to GPL: File exists
dpkg-deb: subprocess tar returned error exit status 2
dpkg - error: auctex: failed to install (exit status 1)
dpkg: 1 errors occurred.

Shouldn't "dpkg -r" remove symlinks???
