`savelog' is part of the `cron' package.

How did you run /etc/cron.weekly/syslogd, with no cron package
installed ?

I don't think doing so is supported. If it is to be supported we'll
have to move savelog into a base package, and we should probably
arrange to check the length-of-downtime or length-since-last-run at
boot-time and perhaps run the daily/weekly/monthly scripts then.

Ian M: if you want to do so, please grab the savelog source code
(which is GPL'd) from the cron package and let me know so I can remove
it from the next release.

I'm marking this bug as done, on the assumption that running
/etc/cron.*/* is not supported when no cron is installed.

Ian.

After installling the base configuration (/sbin/dinstall script)
the /etc/cron.weekly/syslogd script makes a call to savelog, but
   savelog isn't installed.

savelog is included with cron, so if the /etc/cron.weekly/syslogd
script is ever called, savelog will be installed.

(I'm marking this done.)

(Grant, if this was not the case, resubmit this as a bug in cron.)

I am using Debian 0.93R5 alpha, kernel version 1.2.1 and libc 4.6.27. I
have installed ONLY the base system for testing purposes.
