Package: tcl
Version: 7.3-3

The Tcl and Tk packages don't appear to provide a copy of
tclAppInit.c, tkAppInit.c, and so forth.

IMO they should, as well as a small example of how to do a Tcl
extension in /usr/doc/examples.

Perhaps the documentation is somewhere, but I can't find it.

Also, having a copy of Ousterhout's book draft online would be good
(perhaps in an additional package), if the copyright terms allow it.
Otherwise a non-free package would be good, if possible.

Ian.

OK.

I believe there is a Tcl_AppInit man page.

I'd rather not do this. First, the draft is somewhat out of date.
Second, Dr. Ousterhout was kind enough to make the draft available on
the net for review. Since the book has been out for sometime now,
providing the draft instead of encouraging people to buy the book
would not be right, IMHO.

I'd suggest that you solicit the author's views on this. It may
well be that he's only too happy for the draft to be redistributed,
perhaps alongside a README explaining that it's an early draft and
that newer, spiffier, bigger, and better information with many errors
and typos corrected is available in the published edition.

That's more-or-less what the Kermit folks at Columbia told me when I
asked them about distributing Kermit -- Don't put it on the CDROM,
but you can distribute it from an FTP site as long as you plug the
book and point people towards the official support site.

Fixed in tcl-7.3-4 and tk-3.6-4.

There is some, albeit minimal, documentation in the Tcl_AppInit
manual page.

I asked Dr. Ousterhout about this and he preferred we not do it.
