Precedence: air-mail
My bug report seems to have been misunderstood. I didn't intend it to
come across as "belly-acheing about this machine running BSD".
Matt Bailey and David Brinks have indeed put in an awful lot of time
for us and generally been most helpful, and I for one am very grateful
to them. I should have said this in my message to start with.
After I posted my message I realised that I left out a smiley after my
comment about the stability of BSD's network code, which I agree is
indeed more stable than Linux and probably more appropriate for
running such a site. That's irrelevant, though - we have no business
telling people who are being so generous with their time, effort and
hardware what do to.
However, I do think it is a bug and so I don't think I was wrong to
report it.
Incidentally, BSD-based ftp clients' `reset' command can be used to
get it to discard the superfluous response data. Unfortunately NcFTP
doesn't have a `reset' command.
Ian.

Because it said `.' on a line by itself immediately afterwards.

Why do you think this is broken? 550 just says "permission denied",
which it was.

As you can see from the session transcript below, the FTP server on
debian.cps breaks if you execute the `PWD' command within the private
tree. (I used `telnet' to interact with the FTP server to be sure
that I was seeing everything that was going on - I didn't need to do a
data transfer, anyway.)
This is probably what was causing NcFTP to break (NcFTP does PWD and
some other things behind the user's back, in a way that vanilla ftp's
usually don't).
It breaks SunOS 4.1.3 ftp as well, if you say `pwd' after entering
private/project.
What was that about BSD-du-jour having reliable networking ?
