The X server packages don't seem to install the link:
 /usr/X11R6/bin/X -> /etc/X11/X

This means that `X' isn't on the PATH, and the xf86config program
can't find it when it tries to run X -probeonly.

xf86config asks whether it should make a symlink to the X server.
However, it says that the link will be called /usr/X11R6/bin/X, which
sounded like it should have been the above-mentioned link to
/etc/X11/X, so I answered no on the grounds that it was likely to be
safer.

Whichever way I should have answered, it seems to me that the question
should be removed.

There is no provision for a system-editable Xmodmap file.  At the
moment the xdm startup scripts look in /usr/lib/X11/Xmodmap, and drop
an error about its nonexistence into /var/lib/xdm/errors.  IMO that
file should be a link to (say) /etc/X11/Xmodmap, and the file should
be provided empty (to announce that it will be looked at, and to
prevent the error in the logfile).

The X server is installed setuid root by default.  I don't like this,
as I don't want random users to be able to mess with my display (even
if they have to use the XF86config I've provided to do it).  Can this
either be disabled as an option, or can the server be installed
non-setuid and a wrapper script be used ?

NB that using `chmod' on the server (which is what I've done) won't
survive an upgrade, of course.

Furthermore, the X server is unreadable (mode 4711).  According to the
most recent guidelines (of some months ago) it should be executable.

xdm wasn't set up by default.  IMO it should be (we've been round this
one before, haven't we ?).

The xdm-errors file doesn't appear to be rotated.  Perhaps an addition
to /etc/cron.weekly to call savelog to rotate it would be in order.
