Well, that would be the way that made sense :-)

Can't you just zcat all the .gz files through a pipe of
pic/tbl/troff/whatever, and thus avoid using files in /tmp ?

I'll work on this. It shouldn't be too difficult. Probably what I'll
do is something like the following:
uncompress the makefile. It's a bit easier to work with that way.
Add a make pager (or something) that will put the text in the /tmp
directory and page it, using $PAGER if set, more if not.
Probably also set up the makefile to know about the .gz files.
'Course this will have to wait until I can get the backlog of email under
control. Don't EVER leave for a week for spring break :-).

Subject: Re: Bug#612: usr/doc/net/named/Makefile should not be compressed
There seem to me to be two different documentation-viewing models
here.
One is that the documentation is a piece of software that requires
building and then viewing or printing. I expect that this model comes
from (eg) the TeX world, where reading any document produces large
numbers of auxiliary files, &c.
The other, which is the one I've been using, is that the documentation
should be viewable in-stream, as it were, using zcat or nroff|less or
some similar construction. This is much more like manpages.
I think that the latter is more useful where it can be provided. In
particular, being able to say (for example)
make pager
in the right directory and having it fire up your default pager on the
output file is very convenient. Smail does this, and many of the
other packages that provide .me or .ms roff documentation can be made
to as well. For an example, if you have Smail on your system, type
$ cd /usr/doc/smail-admin-guide
$ make |less
(or `make ascii-overstruck | less').
The problem with the former model is that if done in the /usr/doc
directory it requires root privelige and is liable to leave files
around after package removal; if done elsewhere the user must make
copies, create directories and be sure to delete the files afterwards.
I think we should make it easy for people to access documentation, and
so I favour the latter model where it is feasible (and in this case -
bind - it is).

I've been installing compressed makefiles and compressed example source
in several of my packages. My assumption is that:
1. The user will copy the files elsewhere and uncompress them.
2. The user needs to be able to write the current directory if they are
built in place, and thus can uncompress them in place.
These are occasional-use files, and we shouldn't hog someone's disk by
storing them in uncompressed form.
I think this bug should be closed out as it stands.
