   A new revision of the Debian GNU/Linux XFree86 3.1.1 packages is
now available at `ftp.cps.cmich.edu' in `/pub/debian/binary/x11'.
These packages are significantly different from previous revisions,
and they require special steps during the initial upgrade (read the
end of this announcement for more information about how to upgrade).

   The primary objective of the new revision is to give Debian
GNU/Linux (1) simplified X11R6 packages (i.e., comprised of no more
packages than necessary) and (2) X11R6 packages that are configured
from the post-installation script. Also, unlike the previous
revisions, these packages *only* include binaries distributed with
XFree86 3.1.1. No additions or changes were made to the content of
XFree86 3.1.1. It is more appropriate to package additions and
changes as separate packages, so if you find something missing that
used to be included, please consider putting together a package! :)

   To simplify obtaining and installing the X11R6 packages, all
software classified as "Required" is included in the xbase package.
The "selected contrib programs" package is included, too, as it
contains common programs like `xbiff' and is a fairly small addition
to the core system.

   The reasoning behind this change is this: The end-user should not
have to spend time reading the documentation or learning by trial-and-
error which of the packages has to be installed to get X11R6 running.
Everything required is included in one client package, xbase, and one
server package.

   As originally distributed with XFree86 3.1.1, the `xbase' package
includes:

debian	  name		req/opt description
======    ====		=======	===========
xbase X311bin.tgz R	The rest of the X11R6 binaries.
          X311cfg.tgz	  R	Configuration files.
          X311doc.tgz	  R	XFree86 documentation and manpages.
          X311fnt.tgz	  R	Basic fonts.
          X311inc.tgz	  R	Include files.
          X311lib.tgz R	Shared X libraries and support files.
          X311ctrb.tgz	  O	Selected contrib programs.
          X311ubin.tgz	  O[3]	Daemons which reside in /usr/bin.

   In addition to xbase, most systems will require that a server be
installed. The following servers are available:

debian	  name		req/opt description
======    ====		=======	===========
x8514     X3118514.tgz	  R[1]	Server for 8514-based boards.
xagx      X311AGX.tgz	  R[1]	Server for AGX-based boards.
xmach32   X311Ma32.tgz	  R[1]	Server for Mach32-based boards.
xmach64   X311Ma64.tgz	  R[1]	Server for Mach64-based boards.
xmach8    X311Ma8.tgz	  R[1]	Server for Mach8-based boards.
xmono X311Mono.tgz R[1]	Server for monochrome video modes.
xp9000    X311P9K.tgz	  R[1]	Server for P9000-based boards.
xs3       X311S3.tgz	  R[1]	Server for S3-based boards.
xsvga X311SVGA.tgz R[1]	Server for Super VGA-based boards.
xvga16    X311VGA.tgz	  R[1]	Server for VGA/EGA-based boards.
xw32      X311W32.tgz	  R[1]	Server for ET4000/W32-based boards.

   And, for the moment (until dpkg fully supports virtual packages),
the packages xbaseR6 and xr5shlib must be installed, in order to be
backwards-compatible with the previous revision. This will only be
the case until dpkg fully supports virtual packages.

   In addition to the core system, the following packages are available:

debian	  name		req/opt description
======    ====		=======	===========
xfnt100   X311f100.tgz	  O	100-dpi screen fonts.
xfnt75    X311f75.tgz	  O	75-dpi screen fonts.
xfntbig X311fbig.tgz O	Large Kanji and other fonts.
xfntscl   X311fscl.tgz	  O	Scaled fonts (Speedo, Type1).
xman      X311man.tgz	  O	Manual pages.
xslib X311slib.tgz O	Static X libraries and support files.

   The following packages included with XFree86 3.1.1 are not yet
available as Debian GNU/Linux packages (but will be eventually):

debian	  name		req/opt description
======    ====		=======	===========
(none) X311jdoc.tgz O	Japanese version of some docs.
          X311lkit.tgz O[2]	Server linkkit for customization.
          X311pex.tgz O	PEX binaries, includes and libraries.
          X311xtra.tgz	  O	Extra XFree86 servers and binaries.

Upgrading from 3.1.1-2 and later
********************************

You can simply use `dpkg --install' to upgrade, as usual.

Upgrading from 3.1.1-1 and earlier
**********************************

Because the names and structure of the packages changed dramatically
between 3.1.1-1 and 3.1.1-2, you will need to take special steps to
upgrade the packages. You will only need to do this once, and after
the upgrade is complete, further upgrades can be done with dpkg, as
usual:

(1) Make a backup copy of your configuration:

      $ tar cvf etc-X11.tar /etc/X11

(2) Remove all installed X system packages (the X client packages,
    like xarchie and xxgdb, may remain), purging configuration:

      $ dpkg --purge --remove xbaseR6 [...]

(3) Install the new X system packages:

      $ dpkg --install xbase-3.1.1-2.deb [...]

(4) Follow the automated steps to configure the package.

(5) Edit or replace the new configuration with your old configuration,
    if you want. Several fixes were made to the default configuration,
    so it is probably a good idea to examine the changes and merge the
    old configuration by hand rather than blindly overwriting the new
    configuration.
