This is a SlackBuild that will repackage a variety of pre-built Java Development Kit (JDK) binaries as a Slackware package that can be easily installed, upgraded, or removed using Slackware's native package management tools. This SlackBuild is based on the official Slackware 15.0 java.SlackBuild by Patrick Volkerding (extra/source/java) and the Oracle JDK SlackBuilds by Ebben Aries (https://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0/development/jdk23/). To run this SlackBuild, either place a single JDK binary package in this directory and run: ./java.SlackBuild Or specify the JDK binary package to be repackaged: ./java.SlackBuild openjdk-25.0.1_linux-x64_bin.tar.gz The supported JDK binaries are: * Oracle JDK - https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/ * OpenJDK - https://jdk.java.net/ This SlackBuild will not work for Java 8. It _should_ work for all LTS releases since Java 11. It _should_ work for 64-bit architectures: x86_64 and aarch64. You should have only *one* JDK package installed on your system. The name of the Slackware package created will depend on the JDK you use: "jdk" for Oracle and "openjdk" for OpenJDK. If you are upgrading, say, an OpenJDK package to a more recent version, you can use upgradepkg. If you are switching between providers (say, Oracle to OpenJDK) you should remove the old JDK first before installing the new one. Each package installs to /usr/lib64/jdk- and creates a symlink at /usr/lib64/java which points to the install directory. On first install of the JDK package, you should log out and log in again so that JAVA_HOME and PATH are set appropriately for the new JDK. JAVA_HOME is set to use the /usr/lib64/java symlink so you can upgrade versions or swap providers without having to log out and log in again. Note that /etc/man_db.conf already includes /usr/lib64/java/man so we do not need to add anything to MANPATH. Oracle JDK ========== https://www.oracle.com/java/technologies/downloads/ Oracle provides releases for long-term support (LTS) versions as well as the latest version (if not LTS). These Oracle JDKs are licensed under the "Oracle No-Fee Terms and Conditions" (NFTC) license. Older Oracle JDK releases may also work but require an Oracle account to download and have a more restrictive license. OpenJDK ======= https://jdk.java.net/ Oracle also provides the latest OpenJDK release, licensed under the GPLv2 with the Classpath Exception. The OpenJDK release is essentially identical to the Oracle JDK. Older, unsupported OpenJDK builds going back to Java 9 can be found at: https://jdk.java.net/archive/
