Subject: Cakewalk/GUS

Cakewalk for Windows V2 (released a few months ago) works fine* with the GUS.
V1 does not do patch caching, so yes, you must load them manually with patch
manager or whatever. The patch number has no bearing on the order that you load
them. Patches retain the GM patch number (as specified in
\ultrasnd\ultrasnd.ini) no matter when they are loaded.

Well, there is a bug or two which Twelve-tone is working on. Mainly involving
patch changes on the drum channel. Workaround: Don't do it.

Cakewalk 1.x doesn't support patch caching, so it won't work well with
the GUS. Cakewalk 2.0 does support patch caching, however.

Patch Man, by default, uses the GM names for the patches. To tell it to
use the names found in the patch headers, go into Options Names... Note
that most of the standard Gravis patches lack names in their headers, so
they appear as question marks.

Regarding large WAVs in patches, Patch Maker Lite, which should be released
RSN, will support 64kB WAVs. If it's released with the new Windows driver,
it will be able to support WAVs up to 1 MB (8-bit) or 256kB (16-bit) for
patches.

BTW, you should post music-related questions to the music digest in order
to reach your intended audience.

Has anybody gotten DOOM to run, using a GUS, in OS/2? I diddled the settings
correctly- I get music, but that's it. The game sists there and never gets past
the introduction bitmap.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

VANCOUVER: AED
OTC BBS: GRVSF

Advanced Gravis Announces More Fun and
			 Excitement for the Gravis UltraSound

Vancouver, British Columbia - November 15, 1993 - Advanced Gravis
today announced "Patch Maker Lite", sound editing software for the
Gravis UltraSound sound card. Patch Maker Lite will be available
directly from Advanced Gravis.

The wavetable synthesizer in the Gravis UltraSound uses digital
samples to create instruments or "patches". Patch Maker Lite
gives UltraSound users an unlimited artistic license to modify
existing UltraSound instrument patches and allows anyone to
create new instruments, adding to the 192 General MIDI patch
set currently shipping with the Gravis UltraSound card. For example,
a crack of a baseball bat or your favorite electric guitar sound
could be recorded and stored as digital patches. Or, record your dog
and create a high fidelity dog instrument for your MIDI compositions!

"ROM based products impose limitations", said Grant Russell, president
of Advanced Gravis. "The Gravis UltraSound was designed to allow
flexibility. UltraSound users can now easily create exciting new
patches that showcase their talents and creativity. This is also of
significant importance to musicians who seek a way to customize their
MIDI patch sets."

Patch Maker Lite may be obtained for a limited time, through Advanced
Gravis' BBS at (604) 431-5927.

In addition to UltraSound, Gravis' 16-bit, 32 voice, CD quality stereo
sound card featuring wavetable synthesis and recording, Advanced Gravis
Computer Technology Ltd. also designs, manufactures and markets high
quality computer input devices, including the Gravis Analog Pro
Joystick and PC GamePad for IBM PC and compatibles, and the MouseStick
II and Mac GamePad for Macintosh computers.

SBOS V3.7B2 Released (GUS0036.ZIP)
 ---------------------------------
Its been a long time since SBOS was updated (06/25/93). Which
could be taken as a good sign ;-)

This version of SBOS has the following new features and fixes:

   - The way the -O1 switch works has been improved giving improved
emulation quality in Carmen Sandiego and Jill of the Jungle
   - Fixed problems with:
		   Flight Sim 5
		   NHL Hockey

		   FPS football
		   Street Fighter II
   - -O4 switch added for games with small DMA buffer sizes. ie:
NHL Hockey. This switch is new and is an experiment.
   - Changes in code to improve compatibility in general

NOTE: Why call this V3.7? The version of SBOS that was shipped with
Flashback was called V3.6. So to prevent confusion we decided
	   to call this V3.7.

MIDIFIER Release (MIDFIR76.ZIP)
 ------------------------------
Midifier is a program which will turn your Advanced Gravis UltraSound
card into a fun-to-use general midi sound module. Midifier will let
you play music using an external MIDI keyboard hooked up to a
UltraSound MIDI adapter.

ULTRAJOY (ULTRAJOY.EXE)
-----------------------
Some users have had problems running ULTRAJOY then the GUS diagnostics.
The diags would always return an SB/MIDI IRQ timeout on a V3.4
UltraSound. This version of Ultrajoy fixes that problem.

Gravis Product Spec Sheets (GRAVPROD.ZIP)

All nodes are independent BBSs', and are not run or sponsored by Gravis. As
such the logon procedures for each BBS may vary. For instance, some give
you immediate access, while others have a probation period which may last
several days. All nodes are encouraged to offer all the Gravis files and

I just recently got an old copy of Wizardry 7 from a trade and tried my
luck with MegaEm. So far, I've gotten music but no FX. I noticed that in
vinstall, you can only select one sound card, but in the configuration
screen in the game, it lets you select two. Anyway, has anyone got it to
work? I'm using QEMM 7.03, if that makes any difference.

Thanks,

P.S. I tried SBOS, but wound up with an internal stack overflow error and
a machine lockup.

Subject: Please take care when replying to Digest

Periodically the digest will be inflated with the complete (or nearly
complete) inclusion of a previous day's digest. This makes for a very
  large digest that is:

  1. Bloated and filled with redundant information (wasting precious
	  bandwidth on the Net)

  2. Difficult to read and rather annoying for me to wade through.

So PLEASE be careful when you reply to a digest. If you're going to
quote, just use the parts that are of interest to you.

  Thanks and Happy Holidays!

The subject line says it all, but just to drive the point home: Last
night I installed a new game from Interplay called Star Trek:
Judgement Rites onto my GUS-endowed PC. (By the way, this game is a
major disk hog! It takes 11 disks [!] and 27MB of space. YOWZA!!)
The game installation went smoothly, and I simply chose the SCC-1/GM
and SB options in the set-up, ran Mega-Em (v2.01), and ----

AWESOME sound effects and music began to pour out of my speakers. Not
a glitch in sight (at least, none that I have encountered so far in
  the first game)!

All you Trekkers out there: run out right now and get ST:JR to run on
your GUS. You won't be disappointed!

  Peace and Happy Holidays!

with the GUS. I have no other Game Cards or Game Ports in the system but
I'm having trouble Calibrating the Joystick in games like IndyCar Racer
from Papyrus. The angle type of calibration works. Any help will be
appreciated. Thanks!

Cheers,

Vince
