Does anyone remember the beta version of modus? It is a good mod player under
windows, unfortunately it makes my windows crash everytime I quit. Is there a
newer version of modus, or a good mod player for windows? I've tried WMP but
it takes a lot of CPU power, causing lag or even frequent pause while playing.
Thanks in advance!

Well, Paul, the format's right, but it's in the wrong place :-).
Seriously, send it to me, not the digest. I don't want all this stuff
clogging up the digest, and my scripts won't extract it from here.
I'll let this one slide and enter you by hand, but don't anybody else

Has anyone here played Dune? I've been trying - unsuccessfully - to get
digital speech playing via SBOS. I can get music using the -o2 switch,
but nothing I try gives me speech.

I'm using a fairly recent SBOS, but I still have my v1.20 version if I
need to use it B-)

I'm not using Stacker or any strange TSRs (apart from SBOS B->), so
AFAIK it's SBOS that's the problem. Can anyone help?

Nice sig!

My original 2.05 disks that came with my GUS were defective (disk4, I believe).
I downloaded the 2.06L disks (fortunately I have ftp access) and later the 2.06
to 2.06a patch file. I received my BONUS disk yesterday (the commercial programs
not present on the 2.06L disk set). I believe what I have now is equivalent to
the 2.06a disk set. Is this a valid conclusion?

P.S. There are 6 2.06L disks vs 5 2.05 disks.

I recently tried a Kraft joystick Y-adapter and 2 Gravis gamepads
on my GUS joystick port. In 3 different games with 2-player support,
the left joystick worked fine, but when pressing either the A or B
fire buttons on the right joystick, the games acted as if the lower
right direction on the pad had been pressed. NHL Hockey exhibited
the same effect in its calibration routine and the right joystick
couldn't be calibrated as a result. Swapping the gamepads had no affect.

The same Y-adapter and gamepads work fine with the built-in game port
or Sound-FX Basic game port on a friend's computer.

Any ideas?

Subject: keyboard locks up sometimes when I boot!

Hiya,

Sometimes (not all the time, about 50% of the time) when I boot my PC, the
keyboard is locked, and I can't do anything except hit the reset button
(can't do 3-finger salute cos the keyboard is locked). This leads me to
believe that there is an interrupt conflict between the keyboard and some-
thing about the GUS (perhaps SBOS?). My GUS has the default settings and
works no problem, and the keyboard and the GUS work together no problem, as
long as I get past the boot alright; that is, either the keyboard locks at
boot-up, or everything is fine. I checked System Information in PCTools, and
it tells me that SBOSDRV is the owner of the keyboard interrupt (01); it is
also the owner of interrupt 0B.

If someone could help me out, it'd be much appreciated. I'm using SBOS 2.06
(at least that's what it says on the upgrade disks I recieved, though when
I load SBOS it says GF1 SBOS V2.08, what gives?).

Subject: Motherboard problems

My system (486DX33, ISA) had a Contaq motherboard. Unfortunately, this
motherboard locked up whenever I tried to use one of the 16-bit DMA
channels on my GUS, so Tuesday I took it to the dealer I bought it from
a year ago (I have a two year warranty) and Wednesday they called and
told me the new motherboard worked just fine with 16-bit DMA channels.
I picked the system up and took it home. At home I opened the case and
looked at the motherboard. This motherboard was much smaller, and the
two main support ICs were Samsung and uniLOGIC. At this point I started
to worry, since I'd never heard of any motherboards using these support
ICs before, but I decided if the motherboard worked, then I wouldn't
worry about it.

I plugged my VGA, keyboard, power, and speaker cables in and powered on.
The first thing I noticed was the AMI BIOS on the new board was a newer
revision, so I hit <DEL> to enter the BIOS setup screen. I looked around
and found this version had more features. This looked good, so I exited
the setup screen and booted DOS. Everything looked good until my AUTOEXEC
hit the loadsbos command. I got the message that the NMI on the mother-
board was disabled (however that message reads), and the loadsbos -f that
follows failed. I took the system back in this morning, and am supposed
to have yet another motherboard tonight. I sure hope that one doesn't
have yet another problem.

Subject: Re: Motherboard problems

The third time was the charm, in more ways than one:

1) The GUS works with 16-bit DMA channels, and the NMI on the new
	motherboard is not disabled.

2) The new motherboard is a much nice motherboard with 7 16-bit
ISA slots (3 are also VESA local bus slots; my original and
first replacement were both ISA-only). This saves me an
	expensive upgrade down the road!

The service tech at the dealer spent about 1/2 an hour on the
phone with Gravis tech support to make sure the motherboard
worked with the GUS completely. I'd say that is great service
both by the dealer's and Gravis' techs!

Subject: Some modest suggestions

Here are a couple of suggestions:

1) While it is true that paper mail is weightier than email, it also
true that the dollar is mightier than the pen. An adventurous
soul might want to try this experiment - send a cheque to the
software company, for example Apogee, and a note saying that
they may cash it IF and WHEN they have proper sound support
for their game with the GUS. They will be able to see that
you will put your money where your mouth is. No, I don't know
any of the legal implications, etc, but I'm assuming that
they can't legally or honestly cash your cheque unless they
produce a patch or driver, or whatever.

2) Well, it is well over a year, and SBOS still is only 90%
percent compatible. This is where things stood in Oct. 92,
but actually worse! Now games are insisting on trickier
memory configurations, and dblspace is taking up 44K on
everybody's drives. So, any new games that are coming
out always seem to take me hours to weeks to figure out
how to configure them to work with sound (ie EMM386? SBOS
	version 1.22? 2.08?, 99.99? mega-em? AIL? ultramid?, etc
	etc blah etc.)

After getting Flashback, though, I noticed something. It comes
with a special SBOS (version 3.60) that works perfectly
and sound great. Then I noticed that version 1.43 SBOS
seems to work perfectly with Apogee games like BioMenace
and Halloween Harry. Using specific versions of SBOS made
these games very easy to use and sounded fine.

So it became clear to me that there will never be an
all-encompassing, universally compatible SBOS, so Forte
should just STOP TRYING! Instead concentrate on making
many customized versions of SBOS that work with specific
games and vendors. That would be much more satisfactory
than what we've had for the last year.

Any comments?
