I use 'ultrinit -o' to enable the output port of the GUS in DOS (and
basically the same thing under OS/2). I think 'ultrinit -l' will enable the
line-in...

Can anyone help me with this ? I'm trying to find out some more about
an old audio board by a company called Technology Inc.

All I have to go on is the name "DV1 Audio Board 01" and it has a
daughter board labelled "DV1 Audio Digitiser 01". There's another board
which looks like it's related, called the "DV1 Utility Board 02".

If this is what I think it is (a multi-input audio A/D converter) I'm
hoping to write some software that will use it as a digital mixer,
outputting through the GUS.

TIA,

Subject: General Midi question
Message-ID: <9309071612.AA13733@netcom5.netcom.com>

In checking out the recently posted GUS compliant midi Jukebox surfer tool
(Mycroft's) I was reminded of a seeming anomaly that I had noted before and
forgotten.

There is a midi file in many of the popular midi file respositories named
"ad.mid". If play this file using WindJammer 2.24 I notice a distinct
percussive sound (a cowbell) during the introductory portion of the piece. If I
play this using Microsoft mediaplayer the cow-bell is missing (also if I play
it with Mycroft's Surfin' jukebox).

I'm led to understand that the Microsoft mediaplayer is some sort of de facto
standard so my question is, what is WindJammer reading from the file that
Mediaplayer (and Mycroft's jukebox) is missing?

I believe the answer to this question has been previously posted but I have
lost all recollection of the answer.

Get a copy of KBMIDIIN.zip from epas archive site in the /util/windows dir. It
has C source code that shows how to do patch caching, it is _very_ easy to do,
from memory it's only one line of code since windows actually does all the work.

Or an Adaptec SCSI host adapter, which I dare say are alot more common than
UltraSounds. It's way unfortunate that Gravis chose this as the default GF1
IRQ as there are lots of folks whose machines hung or otherwise got nasty
when SETGUS tried to play with this IRQ. It appears to be a problem with
GUSMod and GUS Tracker, too.

FWIW, if you're gonna write code for an Ultrasound, use the ULTRASND
environment variable to determine where the damn thing is...

Well - programming for Ultramid this is pretty simple. I have a
skeleton program that plays a midi file and lets you pound out .wavs to
your heart's content... Cakewalk, I believe allows .wav playback stuck
into a song, but only one at a time (yeah Windows).

I think it would be pretty easy to record MIDI events at the same time
as sampling.

Hey all,
I was looking through a magazine and saw a new game from Origin. It
looks to be in the same category of the Ultima Underworld series. The
reason I ask for someone's address at Origin is that I want to find out if
Origin will be directly supporting the GUS or will they at least use
standardized AIL drivers so that we GUS owners can simply insert our own
drivers.

Please respond by email directly to me...
thanks in advance

BTW the game is called Shadow Stalker (or something really close)

Well, no, it's the 'real time clock' (according to Hogan's Programmer's
PC Sourcebook)...and yes, it's already taken.

>IRQ 9 is the same as IRQ 2.

Probably unused; note that originally IRQ2 was 'vertical retrace
interrupt' for EGA, but nobody did anything with it. This is the
redirected int10, which is the old IRQ2, before it was taken over
by the 8259 cascade. If that sounds confusing, don't worry about it.

>IRQ 10 is unused. My Mitsumi CD defaults to this IRQ.

A lot of 16-bit boards are configurable for IRQ9-12, so watch out if
you have anything 'exotic' (e.g. Ethernet, SCSI, GUS :-)).

>IRQ 12 is the MS Mouse interrupt. This is only used if you have a PS/2 or
>Bus mouse. Serial mice take IRQ 3 or 4.

Uh...I don't think so. PS/2 MIGHT use it for the mouse but all Microsoft
bus mice have an *8-bit* interface: IRQ jumpers are available only for
2-7.

How? I've never seen a 16-bit comm adapter (except maybe some of those
multichannel beasts for BBS hookups), and most comm S/W assumes the
'standard' COM1=IRQ4, COM2=IRQ3 setup. (Jeez, he MUST know what he's
talking about, he works for Quarterdeck! :-) )

sound out of sound files, full motion vidio but cannot get it to play

driver before loading it's driver in the config.sys. Does anyone have a
suggestion on how to get this application to work correctly with the
Ultrasound card?

This is a common problem on even the real SB with early versions of Wolf3D.
Id have supposedly fixed it in the latest version of the game (1.4?).

If the lockups still occur with 1.4, try playing without EMM386.

To DDA: I tried running the Parity demo with my GUS on 240h, as you've
asked, and no, it did not run with music (although the demo does run).
DMP262 works fine with my GUS on 240h.

Nope, it's not doublespace. I have happily wasted many hours playing the game,
and I have a doublespaced drive. I'm using sbos2.08, have a GUS with 512K
(although I used to have 256K and it worked just as well), 486/25, joystick,
mouse. I have never had any problems with the game using XMS or not using XMS.
Actually, I have never had a problem at all with the game, even with all of the
edits and changes I've toyed around with. Hmm... what are your settings? Mine
are at the default for both the gus and sb settings. Well, hope this narrows
down the options of what's wrong.

Could be because an Engineer here had trouble with doublespace corrupting data,
I think it's a known bug. I have no trouble with wolf3d and SBOS2b10. Can you
