Hi Everyone,
Some of you may remember that I recently sold my GUS through
this mail group. That's right, I'm the guy with carpal tunnel
syndrome who sold his PC to his sister. I have something that one
of you may be interested in. I included all my software when I
sold my PC, except for Band-in-a-Box Professional, version5. I
did test it with the GUS and it worked fine. Here's some blurbs
from the box:
 --------------------------------------------------------------------
BAND-IN-A-BOX Intelligent Music Accompaniment
Software For Your MIDI Music System or PC Sound Card

Band-n-a-Box Professional
Version 5 (an inclosed letter mentions version 5.05; my note)
100 Styles(Motown, Jazz, Rock, NewAge, Mambo, Pop, Latin; etc, my note)
Midi-FakeBook Disk(100 jazz/pop songs with chords&melodies; their note)

IBM/PC & 100% COMPATIBLES
required; 640K; Supports all displays
1: MIDI interface/synthesizer
   MPU401/Soundblaster/Midiator/Voyetra drivers
OR -
2: SOUND CARD(Roland/Adlib/Soundblaster or compatible)

5.25" 360K + 3.5 720K disks included
 --------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a DOS application, with pull down menus and no mouse
support as far as I know. I don't remember running it under
Windows.
Included are the registration card, User's Manual, 2 3.5"
disks, 4 5.25" disks, and a couple a sheets discribing
installation and all the different styles. If you need to see
something from the kit, I could FAX a few sheets to you.
I called the Washington Music Center, a local BIG-MUSIC shop here
in Washington D.C.. The salesman quoted a price of $89 for
Band-in-a-Box, but he wasn't sure of the version. I'm asking $50
and I'll pay postage anywhere in the continental US.

Let me know if your interested :)!

Hi,
I have read that the pinout for the CD-ROM audio is
left-grnd-grnd-right, but how is this input controlled/mixed? Is it totally
seperate from the line in, mic in? Is there any software that even supports
it yet? Thanks.

I've seen references to people using the GUS with WinJammer. I pulled
2.1 off a local BBS, but can't seem to get it do anything with the
GUS. I've tried configuring the output port as the MIDI mapper and
the direct GUS OUTPUT port to no avail.

Hi...I'm new to the IBM and the world of GUS sound cards, so I really
dont know much. I do need some help hthough. My GUS card has been working
fine, until recently. Lately, whenever I try to unload my SBOS drivers using
the SBOS -f option, it says:

UNABLE TO RELEASE SBOS
DOS INTERUPT HOOKED

WHat does this mean and how do I fix it? Any help would be greatly
appreciated. Thank you...

I've got some excellent 16-bit patches of TR-808 and 909 kicks and snares
which I'd like to let you all have, but I have no FTP access to send them to
EPAS. Would some kind soul take them in email and see that they get onto
EPAS?

Within a few weeks I'll have a complete 250 sound drum patch set available,
probably as shareware, with 1/4 of the sounds in the shareware version. Stay
tuned.

Hi,
I'm not sure if is the best place to ask about this, but it's the
first place I thought of. With all the different drivers, emulators, etc.
for my GUS and other peripherals, I am in need of a utility which allows
the user to select config.sys/autoexec.bat pairs at bootup. I have checked
the archive at SIMTEL and found that there are a lot of programs like this
and I had no idea of the merits and faults of each one and I didn't want
to spend time DL'ing all that over my 2400 modem. I was wondering if
anyone out there is using such a utility and if anyone has any recommendations.
Thanks.

The one I use is called AUTOCON, and I *really* like it. It
lets you have any number of config/autoexec pairs, lets you either
restart your computer at the command line with the name of one of the
sets or lets you choose at boot time, you can tell it to let you use
your own editor (a MUST for me; I can't do without emacs! :)...

	Pretty nifty all around.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry if this is a FAQ, but I can't seem to find the answer anywhere.
I'm trying to run my Ultrasound from Master Tracks Pro4 along with my
Korg Wavestation EX synth. I guess I was hoping for too much that a program
change would load in an instrument to the card. Instead I loaded a MIDI file
with the Windows Media Player which seemed to assign instruments to MIDI
channels OK so that I could sequence them from MTPRO. These weren't the
instruments I wanted however, and loading the ones I did want with the Patch
manager doesn't seem to assign them to any specific MIDI channel. The only
way around it that I can find so far (and it only works sometimes) is to
send a program change for every track, record some trash on it, write a
MIDI file, then load the instruments from the MIDI file with the Patch
Manager.
Anyone have any idea on this? Do I need a new sequencer or something? I would
also like to be able to trigger samples from within a sequence too. That
is, get my synth playing a soundtrack and have the soundcard playing .wavs in
places. Anyone know of any software to do it (pref. windows).

Thanks,

For those of you who have been having problems getting the gf166.com program
loaded, I seem to have found a solution. To recap the problem, the
ultramid.exe program loads fine, but when you try to load gf166.com, you
get a message saying "Unable to install Sound Driver interrupt vector.
UltraMID TSR not detected." Checking the interrupts using MSD or something
similar, it reports that the UltraMID has taken over the Ultrasound interrupts.

On our system at least, going into the motherboard BIOS and turning off the
VIDEO ROM (C000,32k) shadowing has cleared up the problem. This was the
only segment of rom that we were shadowing.

Our setup: Forex 386DX-40 with 8 megs of ram. GUS set to DMA 3, midi irq 11,
soundblaster irq 7, port address 220.

Subject: Sherlock Holmes Vol. III & SBOS & Mitsumi CD-Rom
Message-ID: <9307271630.AA28870@camax01>

Short version:

Sherlock Holmes V. 3 works using sbos 2.08 with -x2 parms.
If using Mitsumi drive, use non-DMA driver.
Anybody got a detailed DMA description/FAQ to send me?

Long version:

As an aspiring multimedia addict, I just bought an internal Mitsumi CD-ROM
for my Gateway 486/DX33. I think that my tales of woe and joy might
interest other GUSers.

My first attempt at achieving multimedia enlightenment was by
purchasing an older Sony external CD that came with cables, speakers,
and about 5 nifty CDs (Tempra Photo-CD, World Atlas, etc..) I began
to have my doubts when I saw that the interface card was 8-bit, and
required DMA channel 1, 2, or 3. I plugged the card in - powered up
my machine for a quick check - nothing... total system lock-up.
After trying enough combinations of DMA/IRQ/base address switch
settings to leave my fingers numb, I still had no joy (although the
neighbors garage door opened on one setting, coincidence?) Tried the
usual rituals, removed all other cards - reset bus speed - drank bad
beer - nothing worked. I returned the Sony system.

Second attempt - I trade the Sony in for the Mitsumi internal. I'm
not too crazy about this, as my Gateway is the mini-desktop model
(baby-AT case), and only has one half-height bay to start with. Bye,
bye 5 1/4" drive. Shockingly, removing the drive and installing the
Mitsumi was relatively painless. The Mitsumi interface is 16-bit, and
allows you the option of DMA or non-DMA device drivers, just in case.
Great Angels of Elvis, it works.

I pop in Sherlock Holmes, Vol. 3 into the drive. What's this? No
native GUS support? What a shock. Okay, load SBOS 2.08, dink around
with the parameters, and... tada! sbos -x2 allows me to get to the
title screen. Two seconds of music, and then silence... next screen
of game, two seconds of tunes, silence... hmm....

Remember that bit about the Mitsumi allowing DMA or non-DMA drivers?
Just for yucks, I install the non-DMA driver, load up sbos -x2, and
voila! It works, but CD access is very borderline...

Can anybody explain this? My GUS isn't using DMA 5 - so it should be
free for the CD to use. Is there a problem with too much simultaneous
DMA on a PC? Why does the sound just drop out?

For that matter, could somebody give a good pointer to a FAQ, book, or
wizard who can explain just what all the DMA channels are on a PC, how
they work, how they are typically assigned, limitations of, and what
states they are legal in?

For the folks at Gravis: are you selling the Mitsumi CD-ROM interface
yet? How much? And hey, where's my memory upgrade?

Hey guys,

This is an old topic, but after reading through the old digests, I didn't
get anywhere. I have Ultima V Part 1 with The Forge of Virtue, and u7gus.zip.
When I played the game with the initia drivers (unmodified) it worked with
sbos 2b10 fine (no voice though). I replaced the drivers with the ones in
u7gus.zip and no sound (and it wouldnt always run either...crashed on startup.
I was hoping there was a way to run the ail drivers in the program, but havent found out what to replace with what if its possible. The roland emulator is out
because ultima7 will not allow you to run ems. Does anyone have an answer to
this dilema?

Smith mentioned on this list some weeks ago. And this was that there will
*not* be a 'MORE-MEM' version of the GUS in the near future (sigh!)<

I agree that this is unfortunate, but Gravis has a fully legitimate excuse,
at least for now: the GF1 synth chip that they use *cannot* address more than
1mb of RAM.... the good news? ICS has a GF2 on the way that (as of last I
knew) supports up to 8mb, and I would think this might show up in a GUS down
the way (purely speculation).
