I have played a little with this idea: why not connect my 2 GUS... Well i did
something better (well i only had 1 midi interface). I installed an MPU401
in one machine, along with a GUS and in another machine i have another GUS.
I connected the MPU to the GUS in the other machine, made a little program
in windows to read the midi in and play some midi (and do a patch cache when
i get a program change, all drums cached at start). Now, back on the machine
with 2 cards, i ran sbos. Voila, i now have a GUS for sound blaster stuff and
a real MPU401 to play midi, on another GUS. Now i need a mackie 1202... my
current mixer is a bit too noisy... (btw, a dos version could be made in a
weekend with ultramid and work on a meager 286, which you can get used for
100$ with a 20mb HD, and another 75$ for the MPU401, all in CDN$ but you could
simply plug the 2 gus together instead of buying an MPU401, but then you
wouldn't get 100% INCREDIBLE MPU compatibility. Oh, and 75$CDN for the MPU,
that's new)

And i did not stop there! I also did another version, just for drums (1000 Kb
of percussions and breakbeats :) ) and changed the setup in midi mapper so
channel 10 plays on the MPU instead of GUS. WOW! Holy MF! I now have 2 Mb of
RAM wavesample space (and trigger .wav on top of that on any key from my
keyb on CH5 and trigger the GUS with the other keyb... now i need an octapad!).

This is starting to make some serious kick ass music my friends! Techno rulz!

Now, i gotta finish the powerglove code and i'm making a CD i can tell you!

Ciao,

For a while I was receiving 'unknown host' too. But it always
worked using 'klingon' instead of 'archive'.

Thought I would leave you all one last reminder.

I'll be in and out of the office for the next 3 weeks. Starting this
Sat. until July 26th I'll be on a week vacation. I will be back in the
office July 26th, and 27th. Where I'll catch up on the mail from the
previous week. On the 28th I'm off to Finland (Assembly '93) and won't
be back until Aug. 5th. When I'll spend the rest of that week trying to
catch up on sleep and more waiting mail. ;-) I'd like to ask all of you
out there if you could hold the fort while I'm away. Thanx. I'll tell
you all about Finland when I get back ;-)

Yes.. this is a faq!

Sorry.. but I tried the tricks in the GUS-FAQ, and they didn't work
for me. My soundblaster is the oldest working model, 1.5, and I just
can't get it to cooperate with the GUS. Whenever I run the TEST-SBC
program it halts with error #400 (whats that?), and other blaster
programs just freeze on me..

The error message goes away if I run SETGUS, but things still don't
work for me.... no sound.

I'm gonna keep on hacking, but I am getting rather sore.. It seems that
my NMI (or something) doesn't work.. so that means no SBOS, which means
almost no games. (moan)

On a different note.. does Prince of Persia II use the miles drivers?
What game companies do?

E-Mail or Digest replies are OK.. whatever you think is appropriate.

 ..Thanx..

Subject: NMI errors.. hellllp!
Message-ID: <9307160820.AA08156@blesi.os.is>

Hi all!

I just got myself a GUS, and have installed it in my computer. The card
works just fine, and it only took me two tries to install it! :-)

BTW.. the card sounds about a zillion times better than my SB 1.5

I do have a problem though, one that shows up when I use some GUS progs,
and also when I use software from other companies (This problem existed
before I put the GUS in). I would like to know if anybody out there can tell
me what is a likely cause for NMI errors.... is my motherboard buggy?

The problem shows up most frequently when I run SBOS (uses NMI..) or
ULTRAMOD (why?). I can also get it by running QEMM with the RAM switch,
running UNREAL with music on, and for some reason Goldplay ALWAYS freezes
my computer (before and after GUS install). It seems to be some interrupt
thing, I guess, since all these progs (except for ultramod?) probably use
interrupts to run something in the background.

My config is like this:
	 Hyundai386se (386sx/16) + *387
	 Orchid Designer 800 SVGA (8bit w/512k)
 *   2400baud modem (9600fax) on COM1
	 Serial mouse on COM2
 * Hardcard IIXL on IRQ 12
 *   GUS card, 220h, IRQs 11 and 7

As you can see, I have plenty of things that could theoretically be fighting
over resources, but I got the problem before installing the items marked with
a (*) star. It doesn't seem to matter what kind of config I use, it does not
make any difference whether I use HIMEM or EMM386, and QEMM kills everything if
I try to take advantage of its RAM feature.. even totally stripped configs
give me the same problem.. so The Problem isn't software. Everything seems to
point toward my motherboard... help?

The error message I get sounds something (I can't remember it perfectly) like
this:
	   NMI (blabla, parity?) error,
		(S)hut off NMI, (R)eboot computer..

And freezes. Sometimes I can reboot or shut off, sometimes I can't. And of
course without NMI, SBOS won't work.. *sniff*

I hope somebody can send me some advice.. E-Mail I guess, since most of you
will not be interested in the answers.

 ..Thanx..

P.S. If there is some news group that is more appropriate for this kinda
question pleez tell me.. I figured this could go here 'cause it is
related to getting my GUS software working..
PPS. If this message got sent more than once, I am very sorry. Our mailer
kept giving me bounce messages.. but then I heard a rumor that the
messages were getting sent anyway.. :-/

If I may interrupt the whining, carping, flaming, and other general BS,
I have a question about Midisoft Recording Session which I received in
the mail (thanks, Gravis).

If I load in a .mid which is on the large side (say, chinese.mid for
example), and play it, there seems to be parts missing. I have enabled
the general midi driver and turned on the extra channels 11 to 16 in the
midi mapper. In chinese.mid, for instance, one of the violin parts is
missing. Is there a restriction on the maximum number of parts which
this version of Recording Session can play?

Constructive replies please - I think if I read one more bitch i'm gonna
get a chainsaw and... :-)

Syndicate works fine for me. I run DOS 5.0 with QEMM 7.1 loading PC-Cache
(1.2 megs high), Stacker (40k high), and DOSKEY. Oh, and dos=high also.
All I do is run sbos with no options (loding it low) and run gus-synd and
I get all sound and music. It works great.

My only complaint is that whenever a digital sound is played, there is a
slight delay, just enough to make the game a bit choppy on a 486DX 33.
However on my friends 486SX 25 w sound blaster pro, he does not get the
slow down.
I guess it has something to do with SBOS, because it has to emulate it.
Is there a way to fix this?

Other than that, I think its the best game of the year, so far. Keep up
the good work over at Gravis.

Got them tuesday. Way back in Moncton, New-Brunswick (cold and
rainy). In fact, all registered Moncton owners received them. The 2.06L
disk available on the net comes in 6 files = 6 disks. The 2.06 also comes
on 6 disks. Haven't installed them yet, but I'm wondering if the two
bonus programs are there. Are they on separate disks or included on the
installation disks?

I have uploaded to WSMR-SIMTEL20.Army.Mil and OAK.Oakland.Edu:

pd1:<msdos.windows3>
WAVUTL22.ZIP WIN3: Wave Utils v2.2, loop and play WAV files

This file contains two Wave Utilities for MS-Windows 3.1 or above,
Looper and Player.

With Looper, you can play .wav files continuously in the background, and
Player simply plays .wav files by doubleclicking them in a File Manager
window.

Looper and Player also support the special feature to play back two Wave
files simultaneously on a Pro AudioSpectrum 16 or compatible sound card.

This is a direct replacement for The Wave Utilities 2.1 (WAVUTL21.ZIP).
New features in this release are:

 - updated help files and documentation
 - smaller executables through code optimization
 - fixed a bug in Looper that occured when an non-existing file was
   dropped while Looper was playing

With best regards,
