Has anyone played 7th Guest with their GUS?

I'm wondering if SBOS is going to handle everything.

Just posted up the following on epas:

*** Chrisnot.mid *** (previously Funk1.mid)

Well, I can't quite work out what to do with the half written Chris5.mid,
so I thought that this might keep you entertained in the meantime.

It's not one of mine (it's got a copyright on it from Voyetra so I guess it
comes with some Voyetra sequencer package). But since someone else had
posted it on epas anyway (what, you hadn't noticed?!?), I thought I might
at least fix it up for the Gus.

I picked some patches for it, added some percussion and a screaming sawtooth
solo, changed its shape a little, and did the usual Chris.mid fake effects.

The result is pretty good. (Wish it WAS one of mine now ...)

It uses about 520k of 16 bit samples, so it might even fit on a 256k GUS in
noisy mode. (Still, why not do yourself a favour and upgrade, huh?). Not
sure how it's going to run on slower machines, though, cause it's missing the
odd note on my 486dx33 in typical GUS fashion.

Anyway, hope you like it.

Chris (chrisw@leland.stanford.edu).

P.S. Might remix it in the morning when I can use speakers rather
than headphones (don't want to antagonise the neighbours too much ...).

Pretty well what the subject says. I'm after some files that sound like they
could be O.K. on the gus if they were fiddled with a bit. Problem is,
everything's in these archives that all contain the same renditions of
row, row, row your boat orchestrated for sitar and tuba and I really
don't have the patience to look through it all.

Prefer an index with marks out of 10 for potential.

Or even just write to me saying what your favourite file that kind of sounds
alright but can probably sound better on the GUS is. All shapes and sizes
considered.

Well fellow GUSers its me again (I know, SIGH! :))

I just wanted to explain a litle bit more my purpose in being so
bucolic and effusive in my criticism which some of you feel is
unwarranted. For those of you upset by my remarks read my first letter
again and then read my second letter.

My point has been to get Gravis to notice that some of their customers
are'nt being satisfied. If there is a problem then we should speak up. Alot
of people complained and I took it upon myself to bring attention to the
matter LOUD and CLEAR. I like Gravis. I like their products and I want
them to succeed. However, they cannot do so without feedback.

As for those who say be patient quality versus quantity etc. My
retort is that we should not even be entertaining this notion, that is not the
issue. The point is you can and must have both, successful companies do.

For those of you who have had no problems with GUS, or figured it
out on your own I say, great, I applaud you. I have been able to figure
out most problems on my own too. I take the initiative to read the manuals
and give things a try. I read the FAQ and follow others advice on the
digest. I am not the helpless type. But others my not be as gifted with
computers and need help with "those damn boxes", and Gravis has an
obligation to help them promptly and courtously. Those who doubt it
better believe that people will go else where to get their needs met, say
Creative Labs. None of us want that!

Well I hope I made this muddle clear. I am trying to help Gravis
and all of us GUSers who are holding out for the Wave Table Synthesis
Paradise to come (I hope). My point is to let Gravis know we are not all
happy in GUS land. Finally I believe that my point has been affirmed we
did get a response on the digest from John (Thank YOU! I mean that!) and
we have had a lively discussion on the topibc of customer service and tits
importance.

Thank you all very much, enough said.

A big advantage for patch loading is for sound effects. Put a gunshot
("bang", not "wheeeee"), a laser blast, a grenade, a scream, and plane in
patches, and you're all set for some GREAT no cpu sound effects for arcade
games...

Now THAT would be a FUN demo... Okay you can throw in some music too :-)

I don't know why people haven't gotten responses from John Smith, but I've
sent five or six letters to him since the @gravis.com site went up, with
the most recent one sent 3 days before the BBS went down for the move to the
new building. Every one of them has been answered within a week or so, give
or take a day or two.

John Smith has been very helpful to me, and very responsive to my mail. Is
it possible that there is some sort of problem with the mail link to
Gravis.com, and he just didn't get your messages? Or maybe the replies
were lost in the bit bucket. Anyway, I know from personal experience that
he does answer his E-mail.

believe digest Vols 32-33 for suggestions.

Star Control people. The problems with sound quality arise if you have
any RAM on you GUS card. This is do to a buggy Developers Kit sent to
Accolade by Gravis (OOPS :{). Suggestion run a 669 file or the gustest.exe

BAM! I like John Smith's comeback. Right when everyone thinks he's gone, or
no longer responds to e-mail, WHAM! He leaves a message saying he's alive and
well.

Okay, for you Strike Commander fans. The speech-pak only adds speech to the
actual combat (in-flight). When you communicate, you should hear your wing
man's acknwoledgeent. If you can't hear them, go to ALT-O, and check the
appropriate settings.

If you turn off music, guess what? You get "engine noise." This engine noise
sounds alright on a Soundblaster, but SBOS seems to mangle it. The gun-noise
is also quite mangled. It's not supposed to be high-pitched and screetchy,
it's supposed to sound like a "repeating drum." That's the best I can describe
it.

Anyone notcied that Strike Commander uses .adv files for sound drivers? I
tried to make SC support the SBPro, but it doesn't seem to recognize it. On
my friend's SB-16ASP, the SBPro setting just reverts back to Soundblaster.

As a matter of fact, I deleted all the .adv files, yet Strike Commander produced
it's music perfectly fine without the drivers. What are they there for? Just
decoration? Why can't I just rename the sbfm.adv file and replace it with the
sbprofm file from some other game (which also uses .adv files) ?

Actually I haven't heard of too many people who had to stay up all night
to get the GUS card to work. Most people, me included, have stayed up
all night playing, tweaking, experimenting with the GUS card. Two
different things.

Who is trying to cheese anyone. We are all working towards the same
goal, making the GUS a superior card. You give us valuable feed back
that we use to make a better product. Where else does such a large
number of users have such a direct and immediate influence over a
product? We hear complaints about SBOS with a game, we fix it. You say
a patch doesn't sound right, we correct it. The windows install is to
hard, we make it easier.

I doubt that would work very well. All it'll succeed in doing is taking
up more of my time. Which means I have less time to actually fix the
problems.

Subject: workaround for SBOS's LOADSBOS Interrupt time out.
Message-ID: <9305071013.AA24752@orca.es.com>

Well, although going to a 486 didn't get rid of the problem, it did lessen
it somewhat. (When loading SBOS, I keep getting an Interrupt time out during
LOADSBOS.)
But, I found a way to get around it:
In the .BAT file find where it says LOADSBOS.
insert :loop _before_ the loadsbos line.
insert if errorlevel 1 goto loop _after_ the loadsbos line.
Summary:
  :loop
  loadsbos
  if errorlevel 1 goto loop

What this does is try running LOADSBOS again if it fails. It works for me,
but it occasionally take quite a few loops to finally load. Anyway,
I thought I'd toss it out for your illumination. Also, if this problem is
widespread enough (I think it's just my abysmally slow HD) Dave might want to
toss it into the FAQ (btw, I scanned it and didn't see anything about this.
If it _is_ there, I apologize for your time...) Granted, it doesn't REALLY
solve the problem, and if the problem is bad enough it will just loop forever,
but it's the best I've come up with so far...
