Subject: 2 Joysticks

I'm having trouble connecting my gravis joystick and gravis gamepad to
my Gus. I've purchased a Y-cable but when I connect the two
joysticks, no matter which one is set as the second one, its buttons
do not work. I read a while back (1 month) someone mentioned a
problem with Y-cables and that they had a diagram of how to change
them. If so where would I be able to get such an illustration. Is
there any other way to fix this? Or there special Y-cables designed
for the gravis? If so where could I acuire one?

	Any help would be appreciated.

I assumed that the MicroSoft ADPCM drivers (which tend to
come with MicroSoft CDs, like Encarta and Dangerous Creatures)
were just for playback. Given that they are not soundcard specific,
they must just decode the compressed data and feed it to the
real soundcard driver.

You can record ordinary WAVs with the GUS, and then convert to
ADPCM using e.g. CoolEdit.

I assumed that direct ADPCM recording relied on the compression
being done on the card (does a SB 16ASP do this?).

I have the full version of the game but I'm having some problems with
sound. I have a gus with 1 mg, 486DX66 8mg ram. The music plays
really well and sounds great, likewise with the effects when shooting,
they are really good, however, I don't get all the effects that I
should. For example in the first level where you find the big vent
Fan near the beginning, I can't here the sound it makes like I did
hear in the shareware version 1.1, I know that the game should say
cheater when any codes are entered but mine does not say it, only
writes it on the screen. Does anyone know what's wrong?!

No, I never encountered this, but I guess I do know what happens. When
using MegaEm, you load patches in GUS memory. Digital playback however
also needs a little of the GUS's memory. If you look at the default
ultramid.ini, with the default ultrasound patch set, you will see that
you have a little GUS memory left, which is needed for digital playback.
Now there are several ways things can be screwed up:

 * You have replaced some of the original patches by larger ones,
 * or you changed ultramid.ini (in case of MegaEm, or ultramid),
 * or the game developpers forgot to leave some (I don't know how much
exactly is needed) memory for digital playback.

It should be solvable changing ultramid.ini, or replacing one of the used
patches by a smaller one.

Hmm... I have seen the same problems with System Shock, especially when I
tried to silence the music and then turn it on again, or when I died and had
to restart. This also often happens if some game crashes and reboots the
machine. That can be very annoying, because the card continues to play the
cacaophony until the card is initialized in the CONFIG.SYS.. which is quite a
long time on my machine, because the ATI GUP video card does quite some
testing on its internal hardware on any reboot :-)

Does anyone know what causes this ??

But I had no problem whatsoever with World Of Xeen using GM+SB with megaem.

Yoh, Dennis yourself,

I could this in Dutch, but for the sake of others I will stick to english.
The reason probably you do not get any sound s out of the GUS with Cubase,
is related to the version of your Cubase (you did not tell us the version).
Dynamic caching came with Cubase Score V.1.10 (thats what I use).
What you need to do is load (Gravis) Patchmanager and load the GUS with
one of the 'LOAD1024' MID files. The name depends on the amount of
memory on the GUS. This loads the patches in the card and if one of the
patches is in your Cubase tracks, it will work.

Good Luck (Succes)

Well, QEMM does do some funky stuff that programs do not expect. I
ran into countless problems using it. However, I also have run into
many problems with Dos4g programs in general. High IRQs, crappy
DPMI performance, severe slowdowns for disk access.. etc. etc.

Whenever a DOS4Gw program gives me a headache, I rip out dos4gw and
replace it with PMODE/W, which 9 out of 10 times fixes the problems
and also makes it run faster.

Oh, yeah, I do that too.. one boot HIMEM, one boot EMM386, one
boot nothing, and used to have a QEMM boot, but it caused too many
problems.

Hi,
I'm having trouble getting the GUS to run with these games.

Aces of the Deep - uses Sierra drivers. I've copied the gus drivers,
and install files. Install recognises the GUS, the intro gives sound
(uses different XMI(?) drivers), but nothing in the game - Any ideas.

Wings of Glory - tried sbos. Only works if Emm386 isn't loaded. Jerky
sound, and sometimes crashes. Any ideas?

My set up is - GUS v3.4 - software 3.57, settings 220,1,1,5,7
How difficult is it to install the GUS and a sound blaster? is it just a
case of selecting different interupts? I'd like sound in Wings.., but
still be able to use Mega-em for X-Wing.

Cheers,
Mark

Hi Gussers

I own a GUS Max (512K) and I totally new in the world of MIDI.
Most of the MIDI files I played sound a bit "airy", missing
the weight I exspected. And also some of the files have got wrong
instruments. (I use Recording Session and Playmidi.) Is this caused by
the lack of RAM or is it wrong of me to think that MIDI files can
sound like a musical piece on CD?

I live in Holland and the store, where I bought the MAX, sells the
256k chip for f100,- (about $58). Is this a fair price?

If not, do you know a store in Holland where I can get it for less.
Or should I order directly from Gravis, is this possible for Holland?

Subject: PC Gamer Reader's Choice Awards-VOTE for the GUS!

PC Gamer magazine has their first annual Reader's Choice Awards
survey in their March issue. In the sound card catagory they give
these choices: GUS, AWE32, SoundMan Wave, MediaVision Pro 3D, or
Audiotrix Pro. This is a great chance to give the GUS a boost.
Winners of all catagories will be announced at The Elctronic
Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles in May (and in the magazine I'm
sure).

FYI PC Gamer magazine ($7.95/month) comes with a CD-ROM each month
(or a 3.5in. if you don't have a CD-ROM drive) filled with commercial
game demos and select new shareware games. March's CD has: Dark Forces,
Cyclemania, Shadows of Cairn, Under a Killing Moon, Brett Hull Hockey,
Spectre VR, US Navy Fighters, World Cup of Golf, Wings of Glory, Drug
Wars, Klik and Play, The Incredible Machine 2, The Lemmings Chronicles
Capstone Sampler, DOOM I, II wads, and some game patches. ($48/yr.
subscruption, call 415-696-1661 insist on getting the March issue!)

It's worth 8 bucks and you can mail in your vote for the GUS. I know we
would all love to see the GUS win or atleast get second place.

Subject: Welp, heeeeere's the results of the GUS memory poll

I had heard somewhere that the Internet was the world's only true
democracy. No one has a louder voice than anyone else.. That may be
true, but some of you people have to learn to USE that voice!! In my
informal survey/poll, I recieved a WHOPPING 14 letters on the subject.
[yawn] Anyhow, I know that there are many more folks on this list
concerned with future Gravis developments than a measly 15 people..
I even waited an extra day for late returns. Flame me if you want on this,
but I am very sad I even brought the issue up!

Returns:
  256K?!!? : 1 (silly person!)
  1meg : 10! (Why?)
  2meg : 1 (You're getting warm..)
  4meg : 1 + me (Y-Y-Y-YES!!!)

Four megabytes should be the Gravis/AMD nextgeneration card/chip's base
installed ram. Why?! To give developers a nice comfy standard of ram
that they can play with. Hopefully, Gravis will offer all of its
customers a nice upgrade price from their GUS/max to a GUS2 (or whatever
it will be called) That way, we can reverently retire the GUS and begin
pushing the new standard! But more memory is a key factor here, and I
believe cost should not be an issue especially with respect to the memory.
We need more memory for midi patches, more memory for sampling, and a
standard four megs is a nice comfortable middle ground.
