The number of addresses in the mailing for the Digest has now
exceeded 700.

However, several of these addresses are reflectors out to
several other readers. Also, the Digest is being catalogued and
indexed for use on America Online (mainly because mail has a very
small size limit there).

With all the reflectors, the daily readership of the digest is
800+!

Hey, you folks at Gravis! Are we significant yet? :)

Oups! I just realised that i was thinking something and wrote something
different! If you got micro.arj before January 28 20:32 EST, there is an
error in your file. The + and - are inversed for the Macintosh microphone
circuit. More detail in the corrected version available now on archive.epas.

Sorry!

(The capsule has a zener so it was not dramatic if you did plug it reversed.
It just didn't work. Apple's fault 8)

To: All,

I am new to this digest, and have been trying to read most of the previous
digests to catch up on what's been going on, so if any points I raise are old
then I'm sorry.

I bought my Ultasound in early December and on the whole have been fairly
happy with it. I was reading today in an old digest about problems with
sbos in Comanche Maximum Overkill and Falcon 3.0.

Using sbos 1.20 (I have downloaded the new 1.22 driver but not tried it)
Comanche gives no problems on default sbos settings. Falcon3 is more
problematic as although it does play the sampled voices, they tend to stop
after 10 minutes and then remain completely silent. Has anyone else had this
problem? The music seems ok. I have been using the Sounblaster option in
Falcon setup.

Windows 3.1 is still giving problems with playing midi files. I understand
that the problem is to do with patch caching. I have tried the new 1.22
drivers but didn't seem to help that much.

Anyway, I would be grateful to anyone who could supply a list of GUS supported
games as the only one I know about is Star Control 2. You seem to get games in
the US much earlier than in the UK.

That's about time I've got all for.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Hi all. Here is the latest bulletin I just grabbed from the Gravis BBS.
One thing to note is that they now have Internet access. So very soon now,
you'll not need to call long distance to contact their BBS, you can
access it from here. We also hope that they'll eventually either link
to comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard, or more likely, link to the Ultrasound
mailing list. So if you have been reading the Ultrasound messages from
Usenet instead of from the mailing list, you'll be missing out on things
(probably already have). Anyways, here's the bulletin...

GUS Tested Programs Compatability List V1.05 Jan 26, 1993

Send updates to rdippold@qualcomm.com.

This is a list of compatibility settings for the Gravis Ultrasound card.
I have not personally verified all of these, most of them are submitted to
me by other GUS owners. Your results may vary. Nor is this a list of
all programs that will run with the GUS - this is just a list of those
that have been tested by those who sent me mail. It is for the
purpose of helping GUS owners run a program without hunting for the
appropriate options.

If the switches listed don't work, try removing EVERYTHING from your
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. These settings worked for someone,
and memory managers and other device drivers seem to be the main culprits
when something doesn't work.

The "Version" indicates the version of SBOS that the program was tested
with. 1.23 is a new beta from Gravis.

Please note the "Most Wanted" section at the bottom of programs which
just don't seem to want to work. Please check all 16 combinations of
settings ( -o= none, 1, 2, 3 and -x= none, 1, 2, 3) before submitting it
as a "won't work."

Things are now arranged in a hierarchical fashion. If you manage to
"promote" anything up the hierarchy, please let me know ASAP. Ditto if
you notice a problem with a game running with an old version of SBOS that
no longer occurs with a new version.

Subject: GUS Faq finally done... sheesh.
To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

Well, I finally finished v1.00 of the Gravis UltraSound FAQ.
I've posted it to several newsgroups, including news.answers, which is
moderated. So you'll see it on your favorite newsgroup as soon as it
gets past the news.answers moderators.

And as soon as I see it there, I'll mail it to the Daily
Digest as well.

How does this sound to everyone:

	- The FAQ is posted to several newsgroups once every two weeks.
	- The FAQ is sent out in a special issue of the Digest once a
		month.

I figure there's going to be a lot of changes with each
release, so it needs to be sent out often. Also, with the speed that
some sites delete old articles from USENET, it needs to be sent out
every two weeks so people can get it.

PLEASE, FOLKS! Read the FAQ *first* when you have a question.
If you don't find the answer there, then ask it here.

PLEASE, FOLKS (part 2): If you see a mistake in the FAQ, or
think of something that should be added, etc., etc., let me know. I'd
like to keep this up to date and useful.

The new version of kbmidi on epas did not have source as of a month
ago, when I downloaded it. It does correctly load patches for the
GUS, as advertised. I started with the old version of kbmidi, which
does have source, and added the dozen or so lines needed to load
patches correctly. In a separate message, Yuri has suggested he has
source for the new version of kbmidi. I'd be very interested in that
source code.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

I have uploaded to WSMR-SIMTEL20.Army.Mil:

pd1:<msdos.music>
MED135.ZIP VGA / 286 analogue MOD (music) editor

A MOD editor that requires 286 and VGA. A Mouse is optional. It works
using graphs rather than numbers. Free software (Postware).

Requires a basic knowledge of editing text INI files to be setup.
MODRES or any MODPLAYER is required.

Very definitely check this out! It will at least make you smile (i laughed
so much i was rolling on the floor... well almost!)

>We tested the demo under OS/2 with 486-33 and there were no problems at all

On a 386 33 even in non turbo (16MHz), with other things going on in windows,
it worked. The only problem i get in windows is that windows complain about
MPU-401 beeing used . I click ok, return to my window, and it work (except
that there is a little graphic garbage. I have the same problem with the
graphics with the gusmod based mod player i'm doing).

Of course in dos, it works flawlessly (even with QEMM. QEMM friendly programs
get my vote, since with all my drivers, i need QEMM.)

>Qemm and other protected mode memory managers. The reason for this is that
>the player on poll 50 times per second (Goldplay in 44khz poll 44000 times

In clear: a 386-25 with a soundblaster wont even cut it (well, TZ did remove
some effects so that it works), while a 386sx16 will work correctly.

BTW, Twilight Zone, you should have programmed it in P286 mode, so that
286 users would have been able to use it (i'm sure they are fast enough).

Hi all. I'm new to the mailing list, so this may have been covered elsewhere,
but...how do you get the new patches to work??? I read in something that I
d/led that you should edit the ultrasnd.ini file and replace a pattern name
your new pattern name??? I tried this and it will not use my new .pat file.
By the way, the pattern was a Ren & Stimpy sample converted to pat with wav2pat
Any ideas what I should do?

By the way, I have made 7 megs worth of Ren & Stimpy .wavs for use with my
wired for sound. I don't know about copywright laws, so I don't know if I can
upload them anywhere, but if I can, I have them zip-chopped into 4 3-1/2
high density size zipfiles. If anyone is interested, mail me.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>

The plethora of MOD files available is overwhelming. Could people on the
net send me a list of their top-ten MOD's and the location of
the MOD's? Here're the categories I'm interested in:

  * Rock/Pop
  * Funk
  * Jazz/Fusion

  Please send me:

  1. The name of the file and its location (i.e., chicago.mod
	  under /pub/pc/ultrasound/incoming on archive.epas.utoronto.ca)

  2. A brief description of the song (i.e., Pop music rendition
of a song by the group Chicago)

If there is enough interest (i.e., I get more than ten replies)
I'll summarize and post the results to this digest.
