I keep hearing the AMD/Gravis line and I was wondering if anyone has
actually confirmed whether Gravis is really gonna use the AMD chip? I
certainly haven't read anything posted here that confirms this
alliance- or did I miss something?
Thanks to all who posted the info about the new AMD chip- it certainly
looks hot ! ... but was there any mention of the amount of memory it
can address?

But this player is the BEST player.

Do Advanced Gravis actually listen in on this conference?
I know they're going to have their own internet node 'real
soon now' but at the moment I have found no easy way to get
the Gravis bulletins available on their BBS. Calling their
BBS is an expensive game from the UK. They haven't answered
e-mail asking about OS/2 drivers and I don't know where to go to
get their latest news.

Is there another mailing list to get Gravis bulletins?
If anyone knows about progress on the OS/2 drivers could they
please let me know?

If this question is in the wrong place - I'm sorry!

I looked at doing this but came to the conclusion that it would take
an unacceptable amount of time given that MS are even publicly saying
that their days are numbered: develop your driver for the NT model or
be left behind! There has been a rumour circulating that an IBMer in
fact accomplished this feat but the package was buried because it gave
away too much in terms of system integrity - something that I guess
MS aren't worried about very much for the years to come :). Hell, we
can always rename a GPF to something else!

Subject: F-14 Fleet Defender and more...

I recently dumped my SoundBastard Pro sound card in lieu of getting
a better card. The things that were important to me were:

			 1. Wavetable synthesis
			 2. Longevity (future support in games, etc.)
			 3. No background noise
			 4. Compatibility with older games

After considering all of these points, and pushing Computer City's
return policy to its limit, I settled on the Gravis Ultrasound MAX.
I think the GUS Max addresses the first three points really well, but
I am still having some problems with compatibility of older games,
particularly with flight sims. I looked at the GLIST (game list)
to check out compatible games, but noticed a lack of testing done on
flight sims. Can anyone give me a more complete listing of how to get
the card working with many of the flight sims. Here is my experience
	 so far:

	 1. USNF - Got the GUS patch from Gravis, it sound awesome!
	 2. Tie Fighter - Once I found the custom patches for tie, it too
sounds great. I am getting some joystick drift though.
	 3. X-Wing - No luck yet, but haven't tried too hard yet. Is there a
set of patches for it like Tie Fighter?
	 4. F-14 Fleet Defender - Music works ok, speech works ok, but no
sound fx. Please, please, please help me to get this working. FD
		is my favorite sim.
	 5. PAW - Haven't tried it yet, but expect that it will be like F-14
		FD.
	 6. Falcon 3.0 - Haven't tried yet, but appears to be supported (GLIST
		sez so).
	 7. Wings of Glory - No luck whatsoever. If I don't get it working,
soon, back to egghead it goes.
	 8. Strike Commander - Haven't tried yet. Does it work...

Any help appreciated! What future flight sims will have GUS native
support in them? What other flight sims work with the GUS (or don't
	 work with it)?

Ours came from the CD-ROM User Group. You should prob. see their adverts
in magazines. They do supply non-members at an increased cost.

A reasonably recent GUS driver update (one that works).
Apart from that, it's got all the shareware games you already have, *and*
- now this is the good bit - just about every demo up to the date it was
released. (It has a copy of this section of the Gravis BBS).

So it's a great disk for the price. Oh yeah and there's a presentation
advertising GUS, which is OK for lending to your GUSless friends I
suppose.

One possibility is to load the neccessary patches through
PatchManager. That's not very comfortable, but it works.

I seem to have missed it when the information on this was disseminated, or
was it disseminated?

If anyone has answers to either of these questions, I would be very happy to
hear them.

Where can I find more information about the upcoming GUS product?

What type of memory will the product have (I have to sell x36 simms now
unless I can use them later)?

Thanks.

Really strange that people are getting yucky digital voices with Lands Of

Roland Sound Canvas for music and Sound Bastard for digital voices.

What drivers are you using? The AIL drivers?

I also do not have that file, but it is possible to make it work
using Ultramid (which I believe IS supplied). You simply run Ultramid
BEFORE running the sound setup program and it will recognise the GUS
present. After that, you'll need LOADPATS before running the game
each time - to load the midi patches for the music.
I've also extracted the music using RIPXMI which allowed me to
make a copy of PATCHES.INI specifically for Settlers - so that it
loads all the correct patches first. I don't have access to my copy of
the .ini file at the moment, but you can EMAIL me direct and I'll try
and get hold of it.
I think the music and sound effects are brilliant - hope you agree!
	Hope that helps!

I haven't played that game for a while, but I think the you have to
run ULTRAMID with the install program and LOADPATS with the game. Strange?

To the person concerned about Noctropolis and GUS:

Sorry, it's probably not gonna work.

I own a GUSMAX. Tried SBOS, Megaem, etc. I didn't have MAXSBOS when it
had come out though, so hey, maybe there is hope. :)

Anyway, I had to use my Soundman Wave. Pity. It had some really nice

Maybe there's a fix out there somewhere?

Subject: Ultrasound Bank Manager bug, (undocumented feature, whatever)

hi everyone! great to be back! I've been on summer holidays at home
since december 1994, so it's been a while since i've been reading the
daily digests. But i have a question about the Ultrasound Bank
Manager. Hope this hasn't already been discussed while i was away.

Here's my problem:

I'd like to have a separate set of patches in my own directory, ie
C:\ULTRASND\ANDREW, and then switch back and forth to that set using
the bank manager. So I set up my bank in that directory and select
"Copy to bank 0", but windows can't find the patches, and i don't get
any midi sound. I took a peek inside the ULTRASND.INI file and found
that in bank zero the PatchDir is set to PatchDir = C:\ULTRASND\MIDI,
when it should have been changed to C:\ULTRASND\ANDREW. That's why
windows can't find the patches. If i change the PatchDir manually
by editing ULTRASND.INI it works, but i'd rather not do that every
time.

So the problem is that "Copy to bank 0" copies the patch names to
bank 0, but it doesn't copy the PatchDir. For now i'll just have to
junk all my extra patches in the C:\ULTRASND\MIDI directory, which
i'd rather not do. Has anyone else had this problem? Am I doing
something really dumb? Any help will be appreciated.

By the way, I was impressed with the UltraSound Experience CD. Top
stuff! It makes me really glad i didn't get an fm card. It's funny,
everyone i've showed who doesn't own an Ultrasound thinks that the FM
demo music must have been purposely distorted to get it to sound that
bad! haha! Those FM drums sound awful!

Oh yeah, I think all my versions are the latest and all that. Windows
driver version is 5.48, with an Ultrasound MAX.

Anyway i'm gonna get some lunch. Catch Ya! :)

Subject: Windows muted on start-up?

Hi all! I don't know how often this problem occures, but I ran into it
briefly, so I thought I'd put in...

To the guy that had volume drop when he started up windows...
Here's whathappened to me: When I started up windows, it would always
decrease one channel to 30% and the other to 40%. I figured out that if I
started soundstation, and chose setup, then preferances, then locked
left/right volume, and save settings on exit, the problem went away for
that session. On the next boot, the problem returned, until I started the
soundstation (Not the mixer). Then, I put the soundstation into my start
up folder, and editied the sndstation.ini file to set the startup mode to
type 7 and then ATTRIB'd it to 'read only' so that windows would keep its
hands off. (The mode seven starts the Soundstation in 'Invisable' mode.
You can't see it, even tho it gets started in the startup folder. Don't
ask how I found it. (?)) Now, when you startup windows, you should get a
breif decrease in voulme, but after that, everything should be fine! Good
luck! (Attrib command is "ATTRIB +R <file>")
