Subject: 3.59 HORROR

Fellow GUSers,

This is unthinkable. Horrible. Baaaaaad.

When I updated to 3.59 stuff, I was pleasantly surprised to find
that everything worked just fine, including the reason I am alive:
DOOM ;)

To my horror, though, >modem< DOOM no longer works with the GUS! It
hangs my system after a connection has been made and DOOM is "setting
up heads up display." So, I have to use my Soundblaster16. Not a
big deal, but I do have to turn the music off because it sounds so,
well, stupid.

This took me a long time to figure out because I stupidly blamed my modem,
cables, COM ports, etc.. After swapping all of this stuff around to no
avail, it dawned on me that I had updated my GUS stuff since I played modem
DOOM last (about 3 weeks ago). Turn off sound - Bingo! - modem DOOM OK.

I wonder if the new drivers have something like this in them:
  If (COM_PORT_INTERRUPT_NOT_RELATED_TO_GUS_INTERRUPT) {

    do_something_stupid(HANG_SYSTEM);

  }

Has anyone tried modem DOOM with the 3.59 update? Does it work for
you?

Just wondering.......

Subject: bosenl patch won't play

I've seen this asked over the last day or two, but am yet
to see the answer.

The Bosendorfer patch (bosenl.zip, 800-900k) won't play,
either in PatchMan or PatchMaker Lite. No error messages,
just no sound. I have an old non-MAX GUS, with 1MB. I
haven't got new Windows drivers for some time, in case
this makes any difference - I think I'm still on the
3.53 set or something like that. As someone said yesterday,
if you delete one of the samples (I tried the top one) in
PatchMaker, then stretch out the next lower sample to play
the high notes, then it plays, but of course then the
high notes are useless. What gives? It surely must play
for someone.

While writing, is there an 'Index' for the Propats. There
are several sets, all huge, but what is in which?

What version of Video for Windoze are you running? 1.0 or 1.1? If you
only have 1.0, then the choppy video is caused by a bug in the Vid4Win
program which is fixed in v1.1. By patching Vid4Win, you don't have to
mess about with the GUS settings for all of Windoze. If you want it,
I'll be putting the fix on epas as soon as i can, or get it from the
Gravis BBS.

Cheers,
AC

Subject: CODEC/RAM

Hi.. I have never posted on any sort of mailing digest before, so this
is my first one.

I have a GUS MAX and I'm aware that it can compress and decompress audio
in real time using the built in Crystal CODEC. My question is, how can
I get Windows to take advantage of it? Currently, Windows is using the
VFW software CODEC drivers. I thought I could get it working by
removing these drivers, but compressed audio will not play at all if I
do this... Any ideas? If it's not possible, does gravis have plans to
incorporate such a feature into the next windows drivers?

Also, after looking at my GUS MAX card, I was curious about the blank
RAM socket spaces on it. I don't mean actual sockets, but soldering
holes where sockets could be installed. Is it true that the GUS MAX has
the capability of more memory? The 1MB limit is not awful, but I would
like very much to be able to use some of those 500KB+ piano patches
simultaneously with the rest of the patch set to play midi files and
such.

Lastly it would be great if replies could be sent to
tom.klepl@canrem.com because I still haven't figured out how to use the
mailing list. I downloaded the digest from the files section.. it seems
that the GUS digest has not been set-up properly over here at
canrem.com.

Thnx for reading and I hope this will start some interesting
discussions..

Subject: gus clone

Someone wrote in yesterday's digest that he saw a gis clone in
Hong kong .

I can say that's true, this clone is available here in france in some shops.

It's a gus, with 512 ko on board and the triple cd-rom interface.
If you prefer it's a gus max without the 16 bit recording.
The trouble is that is costs as much as a regular gus.

The software are gravis's software, and the docs even (even if you don't
have the nice pics and the cover 8)

I don't thing this a goos card to buy because it costs to much, but perhaps
that's only in France !

I think it's a good new for all gravis users that there is a gus clone,
it prooves that the gus is a really interesting market for the asian,
so that may be a good card ! (I thing gus is the best card available, and
lots of people in France do think so too).

Subject: Magic Carpet

Item Subject: Message text
I have been able to get the GUS to work with magic carpet. To get it to
work you need to run the program main.exe which is in the \DATA\
subdirectory. The trick to get this to work is that you must run it
from the root directory of the CD-ROM. i.e. L:\DATA\MAIN.EXE

This runs an alpha version (A6) of magic carpet which lo & behold does
have selections for the gravis ultrasound. On my computer the only
problem I encountered was the top of the screen where the status bars
are shown had several lines making it hard to see. Most likely that is
a function of the video card you have installed. I have a diamond
speedstar 64 ISA.

Hope this helps.

Subject: MAXSBOS

For all you people who want MAXSBOS, it's availiable on Gopher, and the
address is shown at the end of the digest.

But I have a different concern.

HOW BIG is MAXSBOS, really? I tried getting it, but I only have a 2400 with
compression. And the thing looks like it's 900KB!!?! Isn't it more like
100KB?
I don't want to spend all this time downloading this huge file, unless
that's how big MAXSBOS actually is.. Please help.

I think in previous digests, people said that Gravis decided to make
microphone input mono. It's weird that going from GUS to MAX gave 16-bit
recording but allows only mono microphone input. You may be able to get
around this by putting your stereo mike into a stereo system and then
putting line out through the line in jack, but avoid putting the stereo
mike in directly in line in. It may blow up.

Ooops, 512k limit?! Guess I can't help you there, but if you do upgrade
to 1Meg, try my idea. My suggestion only applies to the grand piano but
here goes:

Download the 900k Bosendorfer patch (bosen_l.pat)
I know the patch is pretty big, but from my ears, I don't notice that
much of a difference when switched to 8-bit mode. The patch may need
some envelope tweaking to give it a 'reverb' type effect when notes are
turned of so you will need to use Patchmaker Lite v1.13 (e-mail me if you
want a decent envelope). Finally, the patch may sound a bit dry probably due
to the lack of a special effects processor but making a copy of the track
using the piano (don't forget to change the channel) and altering the pans
for both tracks so one piano track is set to PAN:0 and the other track is set
to PAN:127 will give it a pretty good effect.

My GUS playing this piano patch makes my $5k upright-piano cringe.

Anyway, I can't seem to get the system to recognize the GUS. No matter what
setting I try, it says "No card detected", even when I rem out all the SB16
stuff and remove the card, just to make sure there's no conflicts.

Any ideas?

plz email... I seem to get this list infrequently.

Commentary:

Great work GUS supporters! Another tens of megabytes of GUS files. In fact,
mostly "GUS only" files! Great work on Advanced Gravis part for they
themselves have released MANY new updates and programs for this validation
period. And all freely for downloading! Many thanks for releasing all
these free stuff from constantly upgrading and updating the free SDK for
GUS developers to constantly updating and upgrading the GUS install
programs and drives for free! Great work Gravis!

And for all the gamers, NICE JOB! Not only are all the new games coming
out with GUS native support, many games are releasing updates so that we
can play the older games with GUS support. And as you can see above, a
good many cool games being released. And I'd also like to thank all the
commerical games that are now being released with native GUS support but
can't be released onto our free archive. Nice job! Just check out the
latest G-list, g1218.zip, for all the cool commercial games out there with
GUS support!

And to all the programmers writing everything from Mixer to new fancy
graphical tracker for the GUS, to documents and info files....etc,
well done! Great job! Just checking out all the cool stuff above from
Pitch-shifting for the GUS to Karaoke for the GUS! Great to see our
archive continually getting increasing support! Just a month since my
last validating period and look at how many tens of megs of new and
cool stuff we're getting. We're still accelerating in our growth! And
with commerical software industry finally starting to pick up steam with
GUS support, I think we're going to need new harddrives soon for all of
our GUS Internet Archive Services sites! ;)

Happy GUSing!

Thomas.
