Subject: Descent and GUS (yeah, I know...)

I know this has been asked many times already but I haven't been able to get
this game to work with my GUS.

I have made a boot disk with the BARE minimum on it. Whenever I select GUS
for BOTH sound and music, the screen locks up on "loading...". Whenever I
select GUS for sound and NONE for music, I get a bunch of weird DOS4GW
errors flowing on the screen followed by a complete lockup! I have no idea
what the heck is going on there. I just see a spew of numbers with "error"
stuck in here and there.

I CAN, however, play the game without sound or music. But, what's the point?

I have tried sbos and it gives some library error which messes up my screen
and locks on my machine. I tried megaem, lockup.

Is there some special config that magically works for everybody?
:)

Thanks

In regards to MKII - no. But just for everyone's benefit, I was having
trouble loading mega-em and the new maxsbos with QEMM 7. I was continually
getting corrupted EMS and Exception xx errors. Frustrated, I reverted back to
version 6.02 and troubles went away. I don't know if it is poorly written
software on Gravis's part or whether Quarterdeck is just trying a little to
hard in finding new ways to screw with DOS's guts.

Yes I am running build 324. I upgraded to 324 from 224 so I did not have a
chance to try it with build 302. Also, I was running EMM386, not QEMM. I did
not remove EMM386 completely, I just removed the RAM option. Also, I believe
I get the gravultr.386 error when I boot fail-safe, but it doesn't crash or
hang. Go figure.

Most thigs work pretty well. What don't work are apps that use patch
cacheing. I have to nanually load patches with PatchManager. Also
PatchManager does not show the correct ammount of memory available and
for some reason it thinks I have a bank 11 and insists on defaulting
to that bank. Even when I remove bank 11 from ULTRASND.INI. I have
also occasionally been experiencing random sounds when playing back
MIDI files.

Subject: GUS Max with Panasonic CD-ROM

I am trying to hook up my Reveal (Panasonic actually) CD-ROM to my new
GUS Max. I think I have all my jumpers correctly placed, and I even
followed the instructions regarding the audio cable (I had to hook it
up to the Mitsumi pins). The CR563.SYS driver loads fine, then MSCDEX
loads ok too. I can type "e:" and get to the cd-rom drive. But when
I type "dir", the CD-ROM drive spins, but after a few moments, I get
an error reading from drive message. Based on the symptoms, I think
the hardware configuration is OK, I think it may be a software driver
     problem. Any ideas?

I have tried to use Iphone now for a few days and have been unable to get

As soon as someone attempts to talk to me my system locks up windows on ice
I have to reset the computer for it to work again.

I have a 486-66 32 meg ram 560 meg HD ultrasound 1Meg w4w 311 win32s

I am using multi config optimized for windows, It has a lot of room to play
and this is the first time that I personally have had any problem with

Anyone other than me having trouble with this program ?

Hi there,

I have another problem. Everytime (or maybe most of the time) I play
MIDI file using midi play in windows, I get a message saying The song
will not play correctly with this setting or something like that. Do
you guys know how to fix this? I think there is something to do with
the patch map or something.

I'm new to this stuff so bear with me,

I have instrument waveforms created on an AKAI S1000 that I have converted
to .WAV via a Kurtzweil 2000 (If there's an easier way please let me know).
Now I want to make patch files. I have PMAKER but the first problem I
have is reqardless of what .WAV file I use, making the patch and playing a
note on the visual piano always seems to play a piano-like wave/sound.
What's my problem?

Second question: Will PMAKER work. I've remember seeing some negative
discussion in the past.

Third: Has anyone published notes on how to modify the ULTRASND.INI or is
it obvious?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Having worked for Qdeck previously, I can say with 99.999% certainty that
Quarterdeck has Win95 already, and as soon as Win95 is an official released
product, there will be a new QEMM release that will address the
incompatibilities. No doubt there will also be a new EMM386 as well.

As a guess, the symptoms that have been described for failure with the
GUS+QEMM+Win95 combinations all sound like a problem with the way Win95 beta
handles drivers that do DMA, of which the grvsultr.386 is one. That EMM386
also has the same problem is a tip-off. Both memory managers have to have
hooks that allow Windows to take over the machine. Change the way Windows
takes over the machine, and the old memory manager's hooks no longer work.
As you know, Win95 has some significant changes to the ways it does memory
management.

It's a similar problem to the occasional MegaEm error "Incompatible EMM."

And don't hold your breath about running absolutely everything in a Win95
window. Don't toss your memory manager registration until a version of
Windows comes out that doesn't even boot msdos.sys, io.sys, config.sys,
autoexec.bat, etc... Until that happens, it's still good ol' DOS.

This may well be old news but I am trying to get SC2000 to work with my
newly acquired GUSMAX. In the sound dir there are a bunch of .DLL files for
various soundcard (except the GUS) but the readme claims to work with 32bit
prot-mode versions of the Miles drivers. So basically, where are the GUS
versions of these drivers. The G-List claims that SC2000 uses Ultramid but
so far I get nothing out of it.

Many thanks for any help provided.

I have got an opinion about abandonding the
        Focal Point 3D compatibility.

There haven't been much of support for the 3D audio.
I think the reason is that it isn't too easy to implement
the support and there aren't many reasons neither.
Most of the time only stereo is enough.

But if AG now drops the support for the 3D audio when the VR
systems are coming, I believe it would be stupid.
When you have the VR headset on (VFX-1?) and you are wandering
in a virtual reality world which tries to be as realistic
as possible, then the audio also should be 3D like in the
        real world.

Then the support for the FP 3D will be handy when the game
companies are trying to find easy ways to simulate 3D audio
        in the VR world.
