I had the same problem. I went out and bought a y-cable that was
supposed to work with a Sound Bastard and tried it in the GUS. It didn't
work but I wasn't surprised. What DID surprise me is that when i tried
in a Sound Bastard, it didn't work there either!

I ended up taking it apart and re-wiring according to a diagram I got
from either epas or from some kind sole who sent it to me.

It turns out that after I wired it, it worked for SB's too! The only
difference between a GUS y cable and a SB cable is the midi
implementation.

If someone would like me to post the pin-out diagram for a y-cable (that
works with both GUS and SB) let me know and I'll put it here.

Subject: ADPCM conversion for H U G E files

hi there.
I have tryied and copyied music tracks from a cd down into a hard disk file
with cdda (da2wav)
It works great. however, with 4 songs, the hard disk gets filledin
minutes .
I 'd like to encode those 40 to 55 Megs files with DPCM compression,
however, all the programs i've found so forth need to have the whole file
in memory b4 to do anything. and before means never in that case.

If anyone knows a way to encode pcm wav files into adpcm waav files,
PLEASE let me know !

If it does not exist, i 've planned to do one myself, but i only have the
regular pcm wav RIFF file format. Thanks for mailing me the adpcm RIFF format,
or at least where to get it if you know.
(I tryied ftp.microsoft.com without success)

My hard disk will feel much better if i can achieve this !!

thanx for your input

I know that we can obtain this information from AMD directly...
but I was hoping (as well as the rest of us Gus'ers) someone
could transcribe all the details and post it here and EPAS.

It was because of internet that I even got a GUS, and it's just
exciting for me to look at all the detailed spex.

BTW, I have the floppy version, not the CD.

Subject: Asus SP3G problems

Hiya.
Wow. Im glad this list is still around. I subscribed to it about 6
months ago, then changed locations (and email addresses) so got
dropped. It's good to be back. :)

I've got a bit of a problem with my GUS and my ASUS SP3G motherboard.
I don't know what the problem is, but when a lot of things get sent to
the GUS simultaneously (like in Doom, with lots of sound effects) the
whole system halts. Not only that, but more often then not, if I am
using gmod to play sounds under xwindows (under Linux) the system will
also freeze. I mail tech@gravis.com but have not heard anything back
from them, and it has been half a week.

I would be grateful for any information anyone may have about this...
Thanks a lot! ;)

Hello Gussers,

Hopefully this will finally get through... I have been sending to
gus-general@mail.orst.edu as listed at the end of the digest, and have
been wondering why it wasn't getting through... :-)

Has anyone been able to get the floppy version of Armored Fist to work
with GUS (native or emulation)? I have checked the G-List and it says:
Native ?

What is that supposed to mean? Native or not?? Maybe native with the CD
version and not the floppy?

Subject: GUS System Software v3.59

I keep having trouble running v3.59 of the GUS software and WFW 3.11. It will
start Windows for Workgroups, and start playing a startup sound. Then, it
quits
Windows and repeats the first 1 second of the startup WAV file that is in the
memory. I can stop it by retyping "ultrinit" and restarting Windows.
Sometimes
it works, sometimes it doesn't. I have heard there are a lot of problems with
v3.59 of the software, and that GUS0045.ZIP is supposed to contain a new
version
of ULTRINIT.EXE to solve these problems. It doesn't though; it contains
MIXER.EXE. (And the file is corrupt at orst.edu and epas.utoronto.ca) Is
there
a fix? Is anyone having the same problem?

Also, is there some problem with Video in Windows and the GUS? On both
Quicktime VR (v2.0, specifically with The Star Trek Interactive Technical
Manual) and MS-Video for Windows (v1.1, I think, just playing AVI files), the
sound is either stuttered or stops in the middle of the file.

For anybody who has PQ4 and problems with it: You don`t have buy any dumb
sounblaster horribility for enjoying this good game. There`s a patch
gus32.exe wich is a patch for all p-mode Sierra games. The only problem
with PQ4 that is ******* up for some reason when the Sierra signal starts.
BUT if you don`t wait for it, but you just click fast before it`s finished
the rest of the game is GUSsome. So click fast and it should work.

Subject: How to play WAV file at diff. speeds off hard disk?

Hello, I am looking for a program that works with the Gravis Ultrasound
and will allow you to adjust the speed of a WAV file being spooled off the
hard disk. It must be able to play off the HD instead of loading into memory,
as the file I'm working with is about 60 MB in size. I've tried the Gravis
program PLAYFILE and tried to adjust frequency, but noticed no difference.
Maybe I don't understand it's operation. I just figure if the file is sampled
at 44 kHZ, and then played back at 22 kHZ, it would be played half as fast (?).
I would need to do fine adjustment of the speed. GoldWave will allow you
to adjust the speed, but to my knowledge will not allow you to do this
without loading the file into memory.

Also, is there a program available that will automatically load patches
in Windows off of a *.MID file, that you could put in your Start-Up
folder? The best I could do was load Media Player and automatically
load up LOAD1024.MID, but then you have to manually play it before it
actually loads the patches.

Thanks for any help.
Carl

I just downloaded GUS0045.ZIP which contains MIXER.EXE, the new

you can change the output level like the mixer in Windows? Well, when I
run Mixer, I can only change Line In On/Off, Mic In On/Off, or Mute
Output. No sliders to change the volume. What am I doing wrong?

for all of you out there trying to get mk2 to work with the gus... the full
release (available from probe software) has a file called ultramid which has
to be loaded to use the gus stuff. unfortunately this takes 59 k i believe
so you have to create seperate configurations and run a memory manager to
load it in uppermemory. there is also a file mk2gus which will load this for
you and run mk2. so take heart the full reease works with the gus

Subject: PQ4 and GUS / XCOM

Hi ya all!

To those that were talking about the Police Quest 4 problem: I got the
sierra 32 drivers that were recommended and there was a slight hitch to
them. I fI just ran the program, it would crash with these drivers right
after the Sierra logo screen. It would dump back to DOS in the 40
character wide mode and list a screenful of variables and
register/addresses at the time of the problem. Or it would just hang. But
to my amazement, all I had to do, was press a button so you get a little
pop up, which asks you if you wanna see demo, or not or something like
that (this was quite some time back, hard to remember). You can the
choose run intro, or the game, and everything is fine from then on. Got
full sound and full music, without any further problems.

If you guys want me to be more specific, just ask and I'll check how I
have it set up on my computer (I am posting from a different computer of
course).

Hope this helps

Now for a question:
*****
======
XCOM
======

I remember a couple of posts either here or on Usenet about the bug/prob
that if you have GUS sound, the game hangs as soon as you go for a ground
mission, i.e. if you take out your Skyranger for an investigation of a
landing. Has anybody figured this out, how to get by this with the gus
on? Any thoughts, patches, fixes?!?!@?!?!?! It's driving me nuts!!! I
want my GUS sound!!!! Don't want to use SBOS if I can avoid it.
