Simple question (e-mail only?) but how can you get 2 joysticks
to work with a GUS (regular 1.2?)? I remember trying (quite a
while back) using a basic y-cable with no luck. I've been waiting
for someone to mention it, but I guess it will be me.

I'm sure that someone can help me. So,

Thanks in advance,

Hi,

I had similar problems. My GUS is quite old and when I bought it, it had only
256k, speed 80 ns. I added another 256k which were 120 ns. Then I
recognized some dropped notes in Windows. (all memory speed decreased to
120ns, if I'm right.) Now I still have the original 80ns 256k plus 70ns 768k.
I think the dropping notes percent decreased when I took off those slow 120ns
chips.

I'm not sure about this, hope somebody knows more about this than I do.

De readme file says that de 32-bit drivers should work with PQ4, but I
had the same problems. I've tried a lot of things, but couldn't get my
GUS to work with PQ4. Finally I bought a SB2.0 (not only for PQ4, but
also for Privateer), which worked well. No MIDI music, though. Just FM
and digital sounds through the SB...

Oke here we go again. There is a bug in a OPTI chip set, it has to do
with the high dma channels. This chip set is also used by UMC. The number
to look for is ???c206???. If you have a chip set like this, you cant
use the high dma channels for your GUS. if you try this you will lock-up
or die with a off-board parity error (0000:0002).

So if you get a error like this or lock up. try a low dma channel.

Hope this helps

Stanley

PS (Gravis where is that new MegaEm, or is going to look like the OS/2 driver

Subject: Gus drivers and Windows 95 Beta

Has anyone tried to run the Windows drivers for the ultrasound under windows
95? I have got a set of fairly old drivers, so i wondered if the current
versions may solve the problem. You can install the drivers, but when you
reboot '95, it hangs, triggering a reboot in 'safe' mode. It is a real pain!

Thanks for any forthcoming help,

It appears that Mortal Kombat 2 demo is one of those P-mode games that
work with Mega-Em. I copied all of the *.mid to *.scc and set MK2Demo to
SCC-1 and voila, got music. Music is okay but you lose the SFX because I
do not see anything about a SCC-1+SB DAC setting in the setup.

GUSsers, to get sound from the Mortal Kombat II playable demo: load SBOS,
then when MKII loads press F10 to configure the system. Choose Sound Bastard.
It won't recognize the GUS, unfortunately. However, the digital sound is
very clear; I was impressed. I suggest turning the FM music volume down to
0 with SBOS. It really bites.
There should be full GUS support in the release version (March 8?). It
looks like a killer conversion.

Subject: Some questions...

The digest is an unexpected but a great benefit.
Now, on to the burning questions...

1. I've got a demo of NASCAR (NASDEMO.EXE) and I can't get any music to
play. I can get the sound effect of the car engine and hitting walls but
that is it. Everytime I run the program it briefly displays my
IRQ/DMA/port settings, then says that it failed to initialize the music
(or something like that).

2. I know that there is a "fix" for NHL hockey, whereby you have to enter
> SBOS -o4. But the audio is very scratchy. When I tried running hockey
with the MT32 setting, I got great music but the game sound effects were
GUS patches, i.e. the puck hitting the ice might be the GUS's bird patch
or the end of period horn might be the GUS's gun fire patch (I don't
remember exactly what GUS sound effect was triggered). Is there
something I am missing here?

3. I got my GUS with driver version 3.57. What does 3.58 and 3.59 have
and what are the files called?

4. How are sounds converted into .MOD files? Are they .WAV's? Are they
sampled then converted somehow? Can I play various patches from a .MOD
file like a normal MIDI patch?

BTW, I just picked up the CD "Ultrasound Experience" for $5.00 U.S. and
it included a demo introducing the GUS and has over 100 MB of software,
utils, demos, etc...... and if you have the receipts for the CD and for
your GUS , you can get $10.00 back.--

Hello,

I want to use software like "Quartz" or "CakeWalk" under windows.

When I launch them, I heard nothing, I couldn't explain it.

I could play midi files on the sound recording session gived by
Gravis with the ultrasound.

Is the Gravis setup of windows enought to use "Quartz" or "CakeWalk" ?

What do I have to do ?

Thanks for your help, V.

I have Descent working perfectly on my GUS rev 2.4. First of all, the game
displayed lots of weird DPMI junk when run under normal configuration. So I
made a boot disk with only necessary things like ULTRINIT and now it works
perfectly. Don't need himem.sys or emm386.exe or really anything else except
a
path, a prompt, set your ULTRASND environmental var and ULTRINIT.EXE/SYS.

Secondly, when you changed the ULTRASND variable, did you rerun ULTRINIT.exe
to
update the GUS to those changes? Then run the Descent setup program as usual.

Hope that helps. I didn't have any sound problems with my setup.

Also, that new AMD Interwave chip sounds incredible. Anyone else
wondering/have
knowledge whether it is the same as the fabled Gravis/Forte GF2 chip?
