Subject: dropped MIDI notes in Windows

Why does the GUS drop MIDI notes in Windows? Is there anything I can tweek
to improve this? I have always noticed that about 10% of notes are not played
whenever I play a MIDI song. Does everyone just not worry about this or are
you getting better results? I am using the latest 3.59 drivers, and I got
similar results with all the older drivers too.

Recently, I replaced a few of the Gravis patches (3.59) with some ProPat3
ones.
Now I notice for the replaced instruments, about 20% of the notes (!) are not
played. The original instruments still sound like about 10% notes missing.
This is real noticable because I replaced a few of the drum patches and what
should be a steady repeating beat becomes a weird sounding beat with 20% of
the notes missing. Can anyone explain this behavior?

If a solution has already been discussed, please direct me to the appropriate
digest number. Thank you.

I too have a GUS (Max) and an SBPro in my system, and I have both of
them working together under OS/2 Warp. The way I did this was to
install the SBPro drivers when I installed OS/2, and then added the
Gravis Alpha drivers after. Two sets of MIDI players/WAV players/etc.
were created in my MMOS folder, one for each sound card. The values
for my cards are :-

SBPro : IO 220, INT 5, DMA 1
GUS Max : IO 240, INT 7, DMA 6 & 7

On another point, has anyone used the new Ultrinit supplied in
GUS0045.ZIP ???? Is it the same as the one on DISK 3.59 ???
I installed it over the weekend and it seems to work fine for me,
it even seems to have fixed the problem I had (and reported) of the
GUS seeming to locking out my SBPro within Magic Carpet (except if
I payed a sample out of the GUS using PLAYFILE, before I loaded the
game).

Subject: Impossible to install GUSMAX

Hello,

My name is Marcel Wilders from the Netherlands, so I hope my spelling is
reasonable.
I tried to solve my problems with the GUSMAX by reading the FAQ-list,
approaching the shop where I bought the Gravis Ultrasound MAX soundcard
(512K) and sending E-mail to this listserver before. So far without
sufficient results. So I hope very very much if somebody can solve my
problem with installing the GUSMAX soundcard.

Recently I bought the GUS-MAX with drivers v3.53. After inserting the card
in a free slot I tried to install the drivers from the DOS-prompt. After
answering the question in which directory the files have to be installed,
and choosing the customize option I get the failure message:

        off board parity error
        addr (Hex)=(0000:0002)
        system halted

After this message the system is hanged and I have to restart.
I coudln't figure out what the problem is.

After looking for the latest drivers, I downloaded the new drivers V359 (6
disks).
I tried again to install the drivers (V3.59) form the DOS-prompt, after
removing the TSR's with the command "kill".
I got the message that the current setup parameters are:

GUS Base Address: 220
Playback DMA: 1
Record DMA: 1
Soundblaster DMA: 1
Ultrasound IRQ: 11
Soundblaster/MIDI IRQ: 5

Since I have a Primax Handscanner which is set at DMA 3 and IRQ 5 (other IRQ
option is 3, but IRQ 3 is used by COM2), I changed the Soundblaster/MIDI
IRQ to 2.
With the option "test" in the installation menu, the screen got black again
with the message:

        off board parity error
        address (Hex)=(0000:0002)
        system halted

I had to reset the machine.

I went on. I disabled "Memory Parity Error Check", which was advised to me
by somebody. I followed the above procedure again with Soundblaster/MIDI IRQ
set at 5 and next at 2.
With the test option in the customize menu, this time I (both settings) did
not get a black screen but the message:

Testing Soundblaster selections............Failed. SBOS vector not
functional

When I tried to diagnose this message from the advanced setup menu I got the
following messages (also with both settings):

        Check I/O Address: Passed
        Check SBOS Mode: Busy (read)
        Check DMA Channel: Busy (read)
        Check DRAM: Passed 512 Kb
Check Ultrasound IRQ: Ultra IRQ Timeout
Check SB/MIDI IRQ: SB/MIDI IRQ Timeout (when IRQ
was set to 5)
                                                             SB/MIDI IRQ
Passed (when IRQ was set to 2)

Neither the User Guide nor the FAQ gives me any que how to interprete these
messages and how to slove the problems.
I checked all my hardware to see wether base port address 220 was occupied,
but this seems not to be the case. Neither did some hardware seem to occupie
an address with x2x.

Maybe it is a very simple problem (which I hope) but after severeal weeks of
trying and thinking I don't know any more what to do.

I would be very gratefull if you can solve this installation problem.

In the Users Guide there is a note that Ultrasound does not support the DMA
channels (5, 6 and 7) required for double-speed Mitsumi drives. This note
puzzles me, because my Mitsumi CDROM, connected to its own interface card,
is set at DMA 5.
My questions are: can I leave the CD-ROM drive connected to its own
interface card at DMA 5? Is it better to connect the data-cable of the
CD-ROM drive to the special Mitsumi interface at the GUSMAX? Should I
connect the CD-audio-cable of the CD-ROM to the GUSMAX (Jp 2) or the
interface card of the CD-ROM drive?

Is there no problem in disabeling the Memory Parity Error Check in the CMOS?

I would be very gratefull if somebody can help me out.

Be forewarned that some Multi-I/O cards do not fully disable the
joystick port even thought you jumper it as "disabled". I found this
out the hard way when I was having joystick problems with WCIII only to
find out that my Multi-I/O card was interfering with my GUS joystick
port even though the Multi-I/O card's was disabled. My joystick would
act really flaky. The GUS utility didn't even see a conflict. It wasn't
until I physically removed the Multi-I/O board that I was able to
isolate it. I got a new Multi-I/O that correctly "disables" the
joystick port and now everything works OK.

Subject: new 3.59 install disks

Hi,

I just installed the new gus v3.59 disks (over my old v3.1), and everything
seems to work ok, except for one thing:

I can't play midifiles using playmidi, unless I first start windows, or run a
game that supports the gus (eg. heretic). It appears that my card doesn't seem
to be initialised correctly when the system boots.
However, I didn't change anything to my setup when I installed the new disks,
and in my config.sys, the 'device=ultrinit.sys' still points to the correct
file.

Mod players and games have no problem though, so I wonder what has changed
with
the new install disks?

Also, I noticed that the E.BAT always says 'no card installed', but this seems
to be due to some differences between novell dos 7 (which I use), and normal
MSDOS. (More in particular, the line 'if %ultrasnd%!==! goto nogus doesn't
seem
to get interpreted correctly by novell dos.

Any clues on my midi problem?

Unfortunately, I can't get SBOS to work with the digital sound correctly
(no, I do NOT have a GUS MAX so I can't try MAXSBOS). However, when
using Norton's DiskEdit to look inside the HMIDRV.DRV file, there IS an

Does anyone know if there is a way to patch or hack this file so it can

Subject: Please, help needed with MAXSBOS and GUS MAX!

I am asking this question again because my mail
server died and could not get several days worth
of the daily digest...

I have a GUS MAX with 1meg and have installed the
3.59 version disks that came with it. I got
the GUS0046.ZIP file from EPAS that has the
0.21 version of MAXSBOS. MAXSBOS does not work!
I do get the music, but not the digital sound.
Also, my system locks up when I try to unload
MAXSBOS from memory. What should I do to get
digital sound? Regular SBOS works fine (e.g.
I get music+digital efx in Body Blows, Unreal
demo), whereas MAXSBOS chokes on digital sound!
I also get NMI not present errors with MAXSBOS,
which is strange because regular SBOS works fine.
My GUS MAX setting is 240h, GF1 irq 11, midi irq 7,
playback dma 7, record dma 6. It is plugged into
a VESA motherboard with a DX2-66 processor and
16 megs ram (it that info will help). I also have
a Promise 2300+ eide controller installed.

Also, I noticed a very serious problem when recording
under Windows 3.1! When I try to record in 16bit
mono at 48000khz, very nasty sounding shrieks and
screeches are recorded. Is this something to do
with buggy Windows drivers? Also, the SoundStation
program's LED display does not work correctly.
Very annoying...

the first screen, it jumped directly to the menu at the end.
The problem is a bug in the MMSYSTEM.DLL. When I replaced this
file with an updated version which I got from Microsoft BBS,
everything works fine (not to mention GREAT!!).

Subject: Ultrinit fix is already on EPAS

I believe that there's already a fix for v3.59 of Ultrinit. It's at
archive.epas.utoronto.ca in pub/pc/ultrasound/submit/gus0045.zip.

Installing this fixed some windows problems I was having (ie. the pointer
dissapeared on me).

It also includes a new mixer with graphical interface for dos, beta
version though...

Subject: Ultrinit in v3.59

Alot of people have said they reverted to old copies of
ultrinit.exe. This is an okay solution but you could also replace
ultrinit.exe v3.59 with v3.61 which is on ftp://archive.epas.utoronto.ca
in the GUS submit directory (pub/pc/ultrasound/submit) as the file
GUS0045.ZIP. BTW the reason that ultrinit has grown in size is because it
now reads the ultramix.ini file and sets line levels accordingly,
disabling/enabling anything that needs to be so you don't have to set them
yourself. The GUS0045.ZIP file also includes a graphical mixer for DOS.
This patch was made because of the problems with wfw3.11.

Subject: WfW 3.11 and Gus 3.59 Another Work Around

I have to admit that I did not know at first that ULTRINIT.EXE was the
problem.
My first fix for the problem was to use alt ctrl delete when in windows I
would get the message nothing was wrong ect.... hit enter and bingo!! all
was well with windows. Note: do this while no applications are running.

Then after reading that ULTRINIT.EXE was the problem, and since in the
instilation windows receives it's own drivers. I (rem)'ed it out of my
autoexec.bat file and all was well when windows ran.

Since I had a multi config setup for dos I moved ULTRINIT.EXE to the doos
section from the common section and have not had a problem since.

Hope this helps someone.
