Subject: AMD InterWave

I just got teh brochures and data sheet on the
new AMD wave table chip the Am78C201/202. It
claims emulation of everyone including Ultrasound
and wave table memory of up 16MB (megabytes!) each
        of DRAM and ROM.

Ask your AMD rep for the data sheet or call
        1-800-222-9323 for AMD literature.

Subject: Gus (Max) and Realtime effects

I realize this is probably way beyond the scope of the Gus (Max), but I
was wondering if there is ANY way of using a Gus (Max) to produce realtime
effects to audio input (ie. Add echo from microphone input, have realtime
result from speaker). This is, ofcourse, purely curiosity, and doubt its
possible, but wouldn't mind being told I am wrong. Anybody want to comment?

Someone posted that GUS works *mostly* fine on Windows 95 (I guess Beta).
Then I don't see why it should not work with Windows/NT.
The problem here is the "install.exe" program.
When I tried to install the GUS software on NT, it complains that
the program (install.exe) tries to access hardware directly, and
it is not allowd in NT.
Maybe Gravis can change the install program, so that at least the
install program may run on NT :) :)

I trying to find out on behalf of a friend *exactly* what type memory
chips are needed to bring a GUSMAX up to 1 meg.

Sorry to ask this question again but I don't recall ever
getting an answer to this question. Does anyone know of an ftp
site having large collections of midi files?

No, no, no !
This has gone too far !

I'm tired to see these silly things, and I believe that many of us have
the same feelings.
Internet's boom has brought on the net too many people who don't even know
about the existence of the Netiquette.

I'm talking about those persons who filled up latest digest...

on the very last digest, Jeff Angels <jangels@u.washington.edu> wrote:

Now: basing on the previous digests, it must be definetively clear that we
don't want to go over the digest for tenths of pages, just watching ASCII
characters, just to have a look to the next significant post !
If you feel the need to inform the others about what you discovered, just
leave a message saying where the patch can be found, but *please* don't
post it on the digest!

Well.. I mentioned the next significant post... surprise ! A whole
good-old-digest quoted by Jay R. Jaeger <dotjrj@dot.state.wi.us>, just to
answer a single article.

I think that this shouldn't be the right and correct behaviour on the net.
Somebody could think that I'm just an old-fashioned-ball-breaker; this
could even be.. ;) but I think that the digest's administrator should
clearly state at the very beginning of *every digest* what is to avoid
when posting an article.

This is *not* usenet: please consider that most of us cannot choose what
article to read from within the digest without scrolling over the others.
I've discarted too many digests just because they were hundreds kbs long.

I think that this is OUR digest and that we have to do something to help
it growing better and more interesting, *not* to make it worse or an
unreadable thing of 200k.

Thanking you for the kind attention

Subject: misc questions and responses

Thanks to those who replied on the 32 ail question.
The file is not at archive.orst.edu but I did find it on
        my Gravis CD.

On the Windows midas question with Windows for Workgroups:
mine seems to work fine. I just followed the directions
provided with midas. I can select the midas option in
mediaplayer. It now plays 'octaves' without crashing the
whole system, MODUS could not. (ver WFW 3.1, midas 1.03b,
        GUS 3.59)

Another question: Is anyone using Procyon2? I can't get
sound out the GUS. It worked once poorly for one sesion
and nothing since. Also, is there a way to print the
score sheets? (version beta test 0.27)

Subject: More on the joystick calibration problem...

I was the guy that posted the problem with NASCAR joystick calibration.
Unless you want to scratch your head and say "huh?" then don't read any
further.

After noticing the calibration problem in NASCAR I investigated further
and found that the calibration in NHL Hockey was kind of weird too. On
top of that, I noticed that the calibration problem in NASCAR wasn't
after a few minutes anymore, it was right from the beginning. I ran
gravutil and the values that were being reported for the x and y axes
were not nearly as high as they should have been (1-39). Also the values
reported in the calibration for NASCAR were not as high as they should
be. I was getting 1-64 on the x and y axes instead of the 4-300 or so
that my friend gets.

Here comes the strange part. I switched to the joystick port on my SBPro
instead (much to my chagrin) and I had the same problem! I removed all my
other cards (including the SBPro) and set the GUS to some simple values
(DMA 1, IRQ 11, IRQ 5) and I still had the problem. I messed around with
my bios (DMA speed, ISA speed, etc) and booted clean. Nothing helped.
Then I put the SBPro back in. I used the joystick port on the SBPro and
configured NASCAR sound for the SBPro. NO PROBLEMS! Then I configured NASCAR
sounds for the GUS (for music and effects) but still used the SBPro for the
joystick. THE PROBLEMS CAME BACK!

I am completely baffled. The card works fine. But when I try to use the
sound of the GUS and the joystick of the SBPro, it goes wacky just as if
I had used the port on the GUS.

I don't know if my GUS is on the fritz (again) or not. Anyone have any ideas?

The card works fine for midi, just the joystick is screwed up.

I have a 486DX2-80, 16 meg RAM, VLB I/O and video, Adaptec SCSI card.
Ultrasound set to 210,5,6,11,2
SBPro set to 220,7,1

Any ideas?

Kevin

Subject: Recording problems with GUS

Dear Owner,

I have tried to record some stereo samples (44K1, 16bit, stereo) both with
Playfile & Wave lite (rel 0.93) but I still have problems. Using Wave-lite
the line-signal (1V Top-Top) is clipping as soon as I have the following
setting:

Line gain : 0 DB
Gain : +2 DB

Besides that, my left channel is recording anything and on the right channel
you can hear and see distortion. Has anyone any Idea what's going one ?

Playfile is recording well, except it isn't that loud. (but no distortion)

It's it the Software I'm using ? Is it worth to download the last release of
de GUS SW to solve this problem or has somebody else a better solution to do
this

Thanks

Arnoud

I've installed Rise Of The Triad, from the zip files of the games
directory. The music is very, very good but I could'nt obtained any sounds....

I choose the ultrasound choice in the menu.

This soft doesn't allow the user to tell it his hard configuration.

My GUS is 220, 5 ,1.

Do you, GUS DAY PEOPLE, have any ideas ?

Thanks in advance.

Subject: Win driver 5.47 OBSCURE problem

Hi guys.

With the older versions of the windows drivers for GUS, when I played AVI
files with Video for Windows from my CD rom drive, if the file was full motion
fullcolor video, then the sound would be VERY broken up.

Getting version 5.46 cured this problem, only by setting the DMA buffer size
to 2048 bytes, any more and the broken up audio would still result.

BUT, of course, 5.46 has that annoying buzz at the end of wav files, so I got
5.47, BUT what happens now is that the sound from the AVI files is really soft
unless you change volume while the AVI is playing, using mixer. If you make
the buffer bigger than 2048 bytes, it returns to full volume, but the broken
sound also returns!!

THIS IS REALLY ANNOYING!!! You get one version of a the drivers that works,
and
the next that cures one problem but causes another! ANYONE else had this prob?
ANY solution? ANY future windows drivers coming out??

HELP!

For the record, I have GUS v2.4, Panasonic Double spin connected to GUS
daughtercard, 386 40Mhz Windows 3.1

Adrian
