Thanks to everybody who wrote to me about my problem with doom.
It is now working!

It looks like it was the video cacheing in the CMOS setup that was the
bugbear. Suffice it to say that it is nice that it is working.

Thanks again.

Subject: GUS & Myst AGAIN

Does anyone have a difinitive answer on how to fix the buzzing and crackling
noises when playing Myst? I've switched to a 16-bit DMA, and I've tried
buffer settings of 512, 1024, 2048, and 4096, and none of those help. I'm
using v3.57 of the drivers. Thanks. Later...

Well, perhaps i can add a line or two.....
What i saw here at a local dealer was GUS Max clone, made by Primax, uses
the same software as my gus, and comes with 512KB and cd-rom interfaces.
Uses GF1 from gravis....

The board is in green, as oposed to gus beeing red... :)
Price was arround 180 US$, but is beeing sold bundled with some cheap
speakers, so the final price is somewhat more.

Well, that's what i know.
George.

It's really easy to see if it's a 3.59 software problem. Don't load
anything. DOOM initializes the GUS itself. You only need the ULTRASND
variable set. Don't run ultrinit or anything else. If it still breaks,
it's not the new GUS software.

What I'd like to know, are they legit or did they just copy the
card and the software and get rich in the process or did they do it
legal. If it's the former, I hope Gravis can get them nuked... After
all, there should be some use for all those nukes in the world and I can't
think of a better use :)

As I recall, the reason was because they ran out of inputs in the mixer.

What may blow up? If you put a mike in a line input, you're just putting
a very quiet signal to it.

Hello..

I've recently installed the slackware release of Linux on my
machine, and I'm having trouble getting it to recognize my GUS-Max.
I've found the drivers (uncompiled), but I'm not sure how to compile
them correctly so I can access the GUS. If anyone can help me, please
mail me!

Thanks,

The 1 Meg RAM is a limit of the processor chip. You can't upgrade it
whatever you do, without making an new chip (like the GF2, sound card with
which is supposed to be out near end of this year). It's about as
possible as upgrading an 8086 chip past 1 meg ...

You're not serious! With no filters and no velocity split, how can it
sound anywhere near as good as a real piano? I haven't heard it, but...

Does the Ultrasound/Max mean it works for both? Or only for the
Ultrasound Max?

On this topic, we still haven't got UAKM digital sound to work. Is there
an update to the HMIDRV.386 file that will work? (music is fine, tried
all DMA channels, etc, etc)

Subject: Where to get GUS serviced?

Well, I switched my GUS back into the older computer (which always worked
fine... no other cards to cause conflicts) and I am STILL getting the "No card

detected" error. So I'm beginning to think that I may have inadvertantly
fried my GUS while I was moving around cards etc.

So the question is... where can I get my GUS serviced? I don't have any kind
of warranty (bought it used).

Or should I just get new GUS?
