Do you have a GUS MAX or a newer GUS (what is it, rev 2 or greater??)? If so,
I think I remember that the CD Input has a switch, or at least a mixer volume
control. In Windows, look into the GUS Mixer applet and see if the sliders
for
CD input are there or greyed out. If they are there, raise them to maximum
and
try playing a CD with the Media Player application (you may have to load the
windows CD driver).

If they are greyed out, or if this does not work, I suggest a bit of
lower-level
debugging. If you open up your case, remove the audio wires you hooked to the
GUS, and touch each of the four pins with your bare finger (this is with the
power on...be careful not do touch anything else), you should hear a 60-hz hum
when you touch two of the pins (one left, one right). If you don't hear
anything, you may have a bad GUS.

This should not be relavent. Audio is audio, and is unrelated to the control
functions. (Except that they tell it to play!)

OK, thanks guys, I will get disks v3.59 and try this ULTRAMIX, although
my only concern is that it might not like my card since its a pretty old
version (I think it sv3.4 or just the one before that , 2.4??).

Is the classic (non-Max) GUS available in any stores? Does Gravis
sell the GUS's that they get from people who upgrade? I know a few
people who'd like to get a GUS, but they don't want to shell out the
bucks for features that they won't use such as CD-ROM interfaces.
I guess the ACE will fill this void, but they don't want to have to buy
another sound card in addition to the GUS.

There has been some talk recently about GUS and Lion King. I, too, am unable
to get LK to produce any sound whatsoever, and I have never had any problems
with my GUS before (IRQ 5, DMA 1). Others, though, have reported LK to work
perfectly well with their GUS.
Surely there can't be one version that's working out and one that's not?
Or could it be a problem with certain settings/versions of the GUS?

Any suggestions appreciated

This may be a braindead question, but I cannot figure out have to
change master volume under DOS.

I am using 3.59 disk sets, but I cannot find the documented params
for DOS manipulation of ULTRAMIX.INI. Windows is a breeze to set,
but DOS is a puzzle.

I know at least five people (including myself) with Flightsticks connected to
GUSs
with no difficulty.

The problem you are describing is most commonly caused by the presence of
another game port (on your motherboard or on an i/o card) which has not been
disabled. [Note: Often i/o cards include game ports even if there is no
connector
on the back of the computer for it]. See if there are any jumpers on your i/o
card
which can be set to disable a game port.

If you *really* do not have any other game ports on the machine, then I
suggest
you look for other interrupt/port conflicts, since to the best of my knowledge
there
are no problems/incompatibilities between the GUS and the Flightstick.

You do not need a midi box unless you intend to drive a midi keyboard from
your GUS.

Read through the first few .ADV files in the sound dir (I think that the
name of it) with a text editor. Around the top of the file you should see a
name for that driver. Once you have found the Sound Blaster FM audio and
the Sound Blaster digital drivers, copy, from c:\ultrasnd\ultramid,
gf1midi.adv over the SB FM file and gf1digi.adv over the SB digital file.
Then configure UW2 for Sound Blaster for both FM audio and digital audio.
Run ultramid -16 (if you have 1 meg of memory on your GUS) or just ultramid
(if you have less than a meg) and then you can run UW2 with native GUS
support.

Have fun, and ask me if you have any more questions!

I have a GUS MAX, drivers from 3.59 and 1024K. Microsoft's Magic
School Bus does not play MIDI correctly, sometimes not playing
anything at all. Both WAV and PCM play fine.

The GUS MAX documentation says to do the following if you are having
problems with *specific* apps and MIDI playing incorrectly or not at
all:

Load a subset of the General Midi set. Do you load the LOAD1024.MID
in the MIDI mapper? The documenation is a little unclear to me.

I did load LOAD1024.MID in patch manager and then the MIDI did seem
to work, but then the DRUM sounds didn't play.

MIDI works in everything else I've tried, what am I missing?

Hello. What kind of ram chips does the GUS MAX use? Does it use 2 512k
chips for 1 meg? I'd like to know what number I should look for to get the
right kind. Also, what speed? How many pins or contacts (is it surface-mount?)
as well.

If the MAX uses 512k chips, will this work? NEC brand, surface mount.
20 pins on either side of the flat chip. Number on the chip is:

Subject: How to use GUS-MAX and AWE32 together in Windows?

I recently bought a GUS MAX. It came with version 3.59 install
disks (contrary to the faq, the mixers in all the gus windows
apps work well so I guess this is not a revision 3.4 board but
a newer one). I am having trouble trying to make the AWE32 and
GUS MAX coexist peacefully on my machine. I DID read the SBGUS
FAQ and tried the suggestions. The problem is that I cannot get
games like Tie Fighter to recognize the AWE32 when it is testing
for digital sound. The manual states that the MAX is hardwired
to use DMA 1 for soundblaster emulation purposes and that appears
to be the culprit. As a result, I cannot get some games that

look for soundblaster on DMA 1 to produce any digital speech.

Also, under Windows using Cakewalk Pro, I cannot get the GUS MAX's
patch caching to work if I set the midi output to AWE32 on one
channel and the GUS on another channel. I have to use only the
GUS midi device only to enable the patch caching (after deselecting
the AWE32 midi and SB midi devices)... Any suggestions?

BTW, GUS MAX is great! Some of the patches sound a lot better than
my AWE32's internal rom sample.

Subject: Re: Marcato patch

There's been a lot of discussion lately about MARCATO.PAT having
the orchestra reversed left-to-right. Am I going mad? I thought
that patches were *NOT* in stereo, and that they just consisted of
a single sample whose pan position could be set somewhere between
left and right i.e. your left and right are the same, except
that one might be louder than the other. What gives? While
stereo patches would be technically possible, they would use
up two of the GUS voices rather than one, so you would only
be able to play notes on a maximum of 16 at once, rather than 32.

:( I changed it to the right settings just now of course. :) The
problem was that in the midi files that I listen to. The composer have
the panning and everything set, so it's sounds right. Oh well, you are
