Novalogic has released AFFD14.exe dated 01-05-95 as a patch to the disk
version of Armored Fist to fix sound effects. However I STILL cannot get
SFX from my GUS. The only setup that seems to work is MEGAEM and choosing
Soundblaster for SFX and MT-32 for music. I get music (even with the
original game) but have never been able to get SFX even with the new patch.

Has anyone gotten SFX from AF using anything???

Subject: GUS 359-X warning!

So, awhile ago I download a file submitted called
GUS357-X.ZIP, thinking it was an extra add-on or
utility that was part of the version 3.57 disk set.

To my dismay, it contained some utility called Jaleo.
I'd heard about Jaleo before and was considering
downloading it and trying it out. BUT if I wanted
to download Jaleo, I would have downloaded Jaleo.
I speculated that someone desperately wanted users
to download Jaleo, and therefore gave it a much seductive
filename.

I thought to myself, naw, nobody's that pathetic. It must have
just been a simple mistake in naming the file.

Then last week, I noticed the identical situation with the
new version 3.59 disk set. Someone had again posted a
disk-x that actually contained Jaleo instead.

So, to whoever is doing this, would you please knock it
off. You are being a low-life. I immediately deleted
Jaleo, and didn't bother trying and now I probably never
will. I don't like a file that doesn't have to courage
stand by it's own name, and needs to masquerade under a
pseudonym to trick people into downloading it.

In case you weren't aware, the name for what you've done
is TROJAN HORSE. Maybe your Jaleo archive didn't cause
any physical damage, but it is a waste of people's time
and it places something on my disk that I never wanted,
and does so in a deceptive fashion. You are no better
than a virus spreader.

If your intention was to help spread the Jaleo program,
well you've certainly screwed that up. As a result of
your trickery I don't trust that file now. If the
perpetrator is the author of Jaleo, or even if you
wanted to help the author, you've instead accomplished
the opposite.

NOW, I'd be willing to reconsider the Jaleo utility IF
and when I hear from the person who keeps submitting it
under a false name. If you don't want everyone to know
about this, just send me an e-mail and I'll keep it
confidential. Then you should delete the 359-X and
other similar false files, and promote Jaleo in a
more honest and honorable fashion.

I will report back to the digest on your behalf that
this problem has been straightened out we'll try to
forget this ever happened. OK?

Subject: HELP! 3.59 Install Disks Lock WFW 3.11

All right...I've fooled with this night and day since the disks became
available, and even with my umpty-ump years (or so it seems) that my GUS
and I have been together, I still have not been able to figure this one out.

I've isolated the problem to my SYSTEM.INI file. After my GUS installs
the windows stuff, and changes my SYSTEM.INI file, Windows for Workgroups
v.3.11 will lock up if you try and access MS-DOS prompt, or anything that
has to jump to DOS, such as my Procomm Plus Fax Driver.

It will jump to DOS, only I just get a black screen, no windows
instructions telling me to type 'exit' to return to windows, etc.
If I copy the backup of the system.ini back over the one the GUS made,
windows is fine again, only the GUS doesn't work, obviously.

Has anyone had similiar problems? or would anyone be able to help out?

My System Config:
Intel 486 DX2-66 Overdrive Processor
8MB Memory

GUS settings
base 220
DMA ch. 1
Ultra IRQ 11
SB/MIDI IRQ 7

Replies can either be to this newsletter, or to my email address directly.

GUSPPG6.MP2 - Audio Mpeg (layer 2) of a Gravis Ultrasound emulating

In this short abstract, you'll hear one note sustained, with a volume and
sweep
modulation using one potentiometer connected to the game port. Another
three can be connected to the game port, which could be used to modify the
attack and maybe a sub oscillator or something lke that, both relatively
easy to do. Or 2 joysticks, one for wavetable sweep/attack and one for
vector synthesis, the four buttons for grunge/loop direction and whatever
else...

Subject: Installing software from GUS 3.59 Disks

I got the 3.59 .zip files from archive.orst.edu . Unlike some recent
posters I had very little trouble installing the software. What worked for
me was to:

1. Unzip all 6 files into a common directory. In my case this was not on
the same volume as my GUS software (but I don't know if this matters). The
result was that gus.001 through gus.006 plus the install and readme files
were now in a common directory.

2. Connect to this directory.

3. Run the install program.

I was never prompted to insert a disk - the install program found all the
files it needed. I also previously installed the 3.57 disks the same way.

Subject: Is the GUS-MAX the card for ME ??

YES, you're right i don't own a MAX YET...
I have saved enough money to buy one but am still wondering if this THE
card to buy. I think i will by a MAX but i have some questions
I would be pleased with ANY answers so PLEASE......

The biggest drawback of a MAX seems (to me) to be the maximum amount of RAM.
- Is this enough for BIG MIDI-peaces?
- Can the MAX handle ADPCM compression on things like MIDI instruments?
- What is the dynamic range (&distortion) according to GRAVIS?
- Can anyone give me the technical specifications of the MAX -in what do
these differ from the normal GUS- (i HAVE read the FAQ..)
- What is the latest version of hard- and software? (3.4 and 3.59?)
- Can i expect problems with my configuration? (SOY VESA mainboard, single
  chip (86C460?) ASIC, AMD DX2-66, 8MB, AMI-bios, VLB-controller, VLB
S3-805 video, mouse on COM1, modem on COM2..
- Can i connect a tripple or quadra-speed cd-drive to the card?
- Can i get the 1mb card for under fl. 500,- (in the Netherlands)? where?

*What are the alternatives -other wavetablecards with RAM onboard- to look
for (I know of the AWE32 but my sympathies go towards Gravis (guess i like
the name.. GRAVISSS..))

I hope my answers will be answered SOON so i can go out and BUY!

THANKS!

Subject: Observations & Questions

Hi,
-> Some observations:

-> For those who have problems with The Music in Nascar Racing:

Try the files loadpats.exe who makes the things works and who is
mentionned nowhere (?).

-> For those who have problems with the music in Earth Siege:

Put the hmi files of Nascar in the Mtech directory.
The introduction becomes "UN-ANIMATED" but the music will be better (?).

-> Now some questions:

Will "Us Navy Fighters" work with My Gravis Max ?

Will "Flight Unlimited" work with My Gravis Max ?

Does anybody knows the "INFOGRAME" e-mail adresse ?
I've try all the Gravis Emulators with "Alone in the Dark III"
includes the MaxSbos and i can't obtain any sounds !!! Any Ideas ?

My WC3 works correctly but crashes sometimes because of bad CD access !
Is this due to my Gravis ?

Any news about sound effects in Indycar 1.09 ?

Does anybody knows if Retlenless (LBA) music is Midi or Audio ?
It sounds very very good...

Is the last Thrusmaster F16 FSCS works with the Gravis Game Port completely ?

Thanks for all your answers.

I have just bought 'Quarantine' from Gametek. I can get the game to
work happily without sound, but if I select Ultrasound, the game
crashes after the copy protection system. The Games List show native
support, which it is, according to the install program. If anyone has
got it working correctly could you get in touch with me.

Subject: So, maybe it didn't need NMI

Right. First I want to tank all the folks who replied to me personally
about my sulking conserning MAXSBOS and NMI. There WAS an (undocumented!)
switch to avoid the use of NMI. Maybe it works, I've only tried it with
Aladdin (is the noisy sound I hear when the music plays at the beginning
supposed to be there?).
I just wanted to get some points straight:
1) The NMI problems are occuring with several of the new PCI motherboards.
2) I do NOT want to buy a new board with NMI. I've spent a lot of money on
GUS related equipment already, and installing a new board is a painfull
job.
3) My frustations wasn't really focused mainly on the fact that MAXSBOS didn't
work. Games without GUS-support are usually lame anyway. (That includes
Magic Carpet. Never have I seen or heard so much fuzz about a game that
bores me to death.) Now, the fact that I have a MIDI-keyboard standing in
a corner gathering dust because the Windows drivers requiers NMI (phew!)
   pisses me off.
4) Erm... I know there is a reason why several manufacters of PCI-boards
doesn't use NMI. Isn't it used to do a runtime check on memory, which isn't
neccessary because of blahblahblah. Oh, go a head and flame me on that one.
5) I never called anyone 'idiot' did I?
6) Isn't it wonderfull to have a pen... Ah. I better stop there.

With humble bows from your NMI-loose friend
Odd Kenneth Oden
