I am using AIL 3.0 drivers . I found them in the PC FORMAT UK CDROM edition.(
D:\mission\(something more).
I found there a 22k ultramid, UMID.DGI and UMID.MDI. I also had lots of
problems with distortion with my MAX
using headphones. They were solved when I began to use volume controlled
headphones or speakers.

I get sound (but no music) in Aces of the Deep (3.5" version, with or
without 1.1 path) with the following procedure:

Edit RESOURCE.CFG file:

In the sound section, change driver to e024 (e028 for max).
Set port to whatever you use (probably 220).

In the music section, change driver to a002.
  Set port to 228.

The sound test in SOUNDSET should work and you should get sound
in the game. Music does not work though.

Have newer ones been released? I have a GUS rev 3.4 1MB RAM and a 486/66

I have been trying out my CD-ROM burner, and am going to make an Audio

on this CD - Will any of the .MTM/.MOD players write a .WAV (or .AU or
whatever) file? I could record (analog) the output from my GUS while
playing the file, but I would like to keep the process entirely digital
if possible... Hopefully I'm missing something really obvious, but I
can't think of a way to convert the .MTM/.MOD into a nice 44.1khz file for
the CD. Have I just fogotten about some MTM2WAV program? Any suggestions
much appreciated...

Subject: Crystal Codec...The real story (or at least a bit realer)

Hi Gussers,

Many nonsense about the Crystal Codec lately. Here's a bit
more...

At home, I don't have a MAX, so I also hate to see that
there's a SBOS for MAX only, but I think it was about time
that Gravis started to use this CODEC-chip on their MAX.
The CODEC-chip (Actually it is a Chrystal Semiconductor
CS4231) is the most standard chip on most nowadays
soundcards. Normally it is used as an AD-convertor,
DA-convertor and as a compressor using the ADPCM and other
techniques. On the GusMAX it is to my astonishment only used
as an ADC. The output still went through a separate
DA-convertor (Philips AD1545). The CS4231 isn't the most
inexpensive chip, so only using it for the 16bit recording
is a bit strange I think. I don't have the data sheets of
the chips at hand (I do have them at home) but I guess the
decompressor part has some kind of intelligence. I guess
it's this part Gravis uses for their MAXSBOS.
I think it was about time Gravis made the MAX a bit more
attractive since you have to pay a lot more for it and get
only 16bit recording back (and of course these
cdrom-interfaces, but who needs them).

Just an opinion...

Martinus.

I know you have received several responses but (in my opinion) none of
them seemed to answer you question. The following are excepts from the
gus sdk 2.21:

5. Chapter 5 Mixer

5.1. Introduction

Revision 3.7 and above UltraSounds have had a new mixer added to them. This
document will not attempt to describe how the internals of the mixer works. If

you want more detailed information that is provided by this document or the
example code in mixer.c, you can get a data sheet from ICS or an ICS data
book.
The part number is ICS-2101. You can contact ICS directly at:

Integrated Circuit Systems, Inc
2435 Boulevard of the Generals
P.O. Box 968
Valley Forge, Pa. 19482-0968
Phone # (215)-630-5300
or
Phone # (215)-630-5399

5.3. Notes

To determine if one of these mixers is present, you MUST look at the revision
of the board. This can be determined by reading port location 7X6. If the
value read back is FF, then no revision ID is present and means that the
version is pre-3.4 and therefore no mixer is present. If the revision is
between 5 and 9, then the version number of the base UltraSound is 3.7 or
above. All those versions will have this mixer. If the version is 10 or above,
then it is an UltraMax. This mixer is NOT used on an UltraMax. The codec on
the UltraMax has a mixer built into it. See chapter 6 for more information on
that.

6. Chapter 6 16 Bit Codec Functions

6.1. Introduction
Both the 16-bit daughter card and the UltraMax use the same chip to perform
the
extra recording and mixing functions. It is built by Crystal Semiconductors CS4231 Audio Codec. This section will describe how it fits into each of those
boards. It will NOT describe much about how the internals of the CS4231 work.
To get a data sheet on the part, contact Crystal Semiconductor at:

Crystal Semiconductor Corporation
P.O. Box 17847
Austin, TX 78760

Phone # (512) 445-7222
Fax # (512) 445-7581

6.2. Features:
  - 8 or 16 bit playback and recording
  - Up to 48kHz
  - 2 DMA channels for simultaneous playback and record
  - 8 or 16 bit DMA channel selection (software selectable)
  - Multiple data formats
    - Linear PCM data
    - u-law compression (2-1)
    - a-law compression (2-1)
    - ADPCM (4-1)
  - 10 microsecond granularity timer
  - Extensive mixer
    - Line in level adjust
    - Line out level adjust
    - AUX1 and AUX2 input level adjust
    - Mic input level adjust

I hope this helps.

Subject: GUS in warp DOS/Windows?

I'm sorry if this was asked before, I haven't read the general digest
for some time. I used OS/2 2.1 until I got my GUS, along with the
Musicator for windows, that needed to run in windows enhanced mode.
In OS/2 2.1 it was not possible to use the GUS in windows or DOS
sessions like you would in MS-DOS + windows 3.1.
 * Has this become possible in the new OS/2 warp?
 * Is this in any way related to the existence of GUS drivers
   for native OS/2 applications?
 * Shouldn't this be in the FAQ?

I'd be very interested to learn from your experiences.

GusMAX worked here on my 2-year-old OPTi 495SX VLB motherboard, and still
works great on my new OPTi 895 VLB motherboard. I use(d) a Fahrenheit
1280VLB on both boards, and on the older board, I first had a Promise VLB
IDE controller, and then Adaptec 1542CF, and now just the Adaptec on the new
895 board. I have used DX33, DX2-50 and DX2-66 CPUs with them. I use these
settings:

SET ULTRASND=220,1,7,7,5
SET ULTRA16=32C,0,0,1,0
SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T1

I also use the Max's Mitsumi CD adapter at 340, IRQ 10. The Adaptec is at
334, IRQ 11, DMA 6.

The story is... Yes there is a patch disk, but this only improves the music

to run it with sbos -o3.

I've read that the symptom of digitized speech playing really fast or
really slow is a problem with using the DMA setting that you have. I
think that if it's 0 or 1, you may run into a problem. In any case, try
changing your DMA channel on the GUS to something else, and then running
X-Wing again.

I've read that you should not run X-Wing with QEMM that is in Stealth
mode. IF you are, either turn Stealth off or try EMM386. The problems
you've described have been described for people with TIE Fighter too, so
I just assumed that they were one and the same. Hope this helps!

I bought an assembled midi box from PMe. Yes, I know, I could have build
one myself, but am a bit lazy with this. The assembled box also
has only two sockets. About the box itself, I don't know if the
kit should include the box. If you want to know for sure then
send them an e-mail and you'll get a reply (heard that Gravis?).

If the schematic has a midi thru socket and you want one then
just build it. The signal is simply a buffered version of the
signal on the midi in socket. Quite simply really: take the
signal from the midi in socket but on the point where the
current signal (midi) is converted in a voltage signal and fed
to the connector to the gus. Buffer this signal with something
like an digital AND port (I think 74LS07 or something, low
power) and send the output trough a resistor again, et voila, your
midi thru. Personally I don't think midi thru is handy for a
soundcard in a PC. It only will be handy if you use the
PC/soundcard combination as a standalone sound source
driven by an external sequencer (another PC?) or synth. I use
mine for the `master' output.

Mind you, PME has other goodies too: a midi interface with
windows drivers (check out their price). Because of windows
ability to use more midi interfaces at once this could be handy.
And a midi merger, to combine more midi signals into one.

Good luck,
Albert

1) put each zip in it's own subdir, ie disk1, disk2, etc. Ran install from
disk1 subdir, and couldn't get past put disk 2 in drive prompt.

2) put all files in one subdir, ie install.exe, gus.001, gus.002 etc. Ran
install and couldn't get past prompt for disk 2.

3) built install disks 1-6 with install, gus.001 etc on diskette1, gus.002 on
diskette2 etc. Ran install from diskette1 and couldn't get past prompt for
disk 2.

4) Looked at gus 3.56 install disks, didn't see any label, but decided to try
this next. Tried label on diskette2 of disk2, then disk 2, then disk002, then
disk.002 all with same result.

Is there supposed to be some file like diskid02, on each install disk, is
install.exe messed up? Anybody had success with this yet?

A friend and I had that problem when we tried to install it
also.. It also didn't display the configuration window for the drivers
during the installation.. I assume this is the problem you are
experiencing.

If you look at control.scr, it has some commented out lines. They
should be in the readme, cuz it is an important note. If you have v1.1.1
of MMPM, it will not install.. You need 1.1.3. v1.1.1 comes with the
purchased version of OS/2, at least the CD my friend had. v1.1.3 is in
the 2.1 Service Pack.. To fix it you only have to download the MMPM disks
and disk 2 (3.5 format). The reason for disk 2 is the MMPM disk require
a different version of unpack than what came with the normal 2.1. So,
replace unpack, install the new MMPM, and then install the GUS drivers and
it will work fine.

If you have the Service Pack installed already, well then that
is a different story :).
