Subject: 4MB RAM on GUS -- possible!?!

Okay, notice that for the UltraSound (not the UltraSound Max though), the
chip sockets are for ten-pin RAM chips. So far, we've all put in the 256
KB types. But I notice that my old 286 has the same socket type for 1 MB
type chips. So, by putting in 1 MB chip types in pairs, and with 4
banks total on the GUS, *in theory* we should be able to expand the GUS's
memory to 4 MB! But wait, before this idea gets out of hand, *I think*
though, that the GUS's GF1 can only address 1 MB of RAM (someone with the
SDK and hardware knowledge of GUS please confirm or refute (hopefully
refute :))). Okay, even if the GF1 can only address 1 MB max -- remember
the great old 8088, and how the 640 KB barrier was "cheated" with EMS
memory paging? Cannot drivers be written such that the GF1 still thinks
it has 1 MB, but in reality, it really has this 4 MB available which
could be paged in and out in 256 KB increments (for the maximum 16-bit
patch size)? Please someone tell me this wishful thinking works! And if
it does, Gravis, please make drivers or a TSR or whatever to make this work.
It's like having expanded memory onboard the GUS.

Subject: Games that like GUS

For once I'm posting to the digest not about problems with games,
but with news of successful native support for the GUS. Looks
like the GUS is coming into its own with the new rash of games.
Black Thorne and System Shock both have GUS selections in their setup
menus, and both have worked flawlessly for me. I believe Sys Shock uses
Miles drivers. I wouldn't recommend this game, unfortunately. Black
Thorne uses Miles or HMI drivers, and I really like this game! A cross
between Prince of Persia and Flashback, but with better action.
I saw that Wing Comm III has native GUS support too. A year ago I
wouldn't have recommended a GUS to a novice, but I would now.

PS: Digest 17 #20 included #19 _twice_ (aaargh!!!). As annoying as it
was, I hope people don't clog up the next issues with flames.

Is the digest still running? The last one I got was V17 #19!

I talked to Advanced Gravis (the one using the AOL account) about the
Protected Mode version of Mega-Em. Well folks, it is sad to say that it
won't be due in time for Christmas. 8~( I just hope the delays are
worth waiting for, I mean really worth waiting for as like WC fans waited
for WC3.

Yup, works fine for me, either with sbos or megaem, your choice, I
usually use megaem.

Hello fello GUSers.. I talked to tech support yesterday and they gave me
a few pointers to help WC# run better.

Raise your buffers to 99 in you config.sys file. Yeah, it's a lot, but it
CERTAINLY helps a good bit.

Upgrading to 12 megs RAM will help the pauses as the computer swaps
memory to disk during combat. But 16 will take care of the problem for good.

There is a bug in certain CDROM drivers (apparently) that will make you
computer crash while going after Flint in a particular mission. the best
I've come up with is to use my SBPro card for that mission and then
reconfigure back to GUS when your done. If yo udon;t have another sound
card, you'll probubly have to do without muisc or even sound if you chose
to go after Flint..

Oh yeah.. if you aren't sure whether you should buy the game or not; GET
IT!! It's awesome!
