Yes, I too, have my 1 MB limit gripe. I'm not sure if it's actually the
problem, but could the 1 MB limit cause the note dropping in big MIDI
files? I have a midi file called erasure.mid, and I notice some notes
are skipped, but it also turns out that this file has lots of instruments
playing at the same time, so I am wondering if the patch caching is
being stretched to its limit. Also, couldn't Gravis get around this by
using motherboard RAM as patch RAM? (Similar implementation as Jaleo's
SuperCache?) I'm sure they can develop a driver that let's us select the
amount of motherboard RAM for loading additional patches.
Another Windoze problem is that my sound events have a harmonica/pitch
pipe buzz at the end of certain files. This did not happen with GUS
disks v3.53 and before, but happens with v3.56 and v3.57. Is there yet
another update? Thanks. -Peter

The rest of your message sounds pretty accurrate, but I doubt this one.
I think you'll find it's made to be built into motherboards next to a CPU
(perhaps local bus, etc). If they built it into one of their CPUs, it
would instantly rule them out from being used in any Intel-based PCs,
which is the far majority of the market.

It would be nice if it were able to share memory with the CPU and access
it directly, but I doubt it will. I also remember hearing that they're
thinking of putting it into notebooks, which means it's probably 3.3 volt.

Not the forged e-mail thingy is it? I knew about that but I can
unsubscribe the digest really quick if I knew someone sent a forged e-mail
to subscribe it in the first place. Too bad, I have no way to track where
the forged e-mail is from since the server doesn't keep a copy of the e-mail
request so I can check the headers. Thanks for fixing it though.

Guess everyone makes a mistake, you're forgiven since it's Christmas
but next time, remember to disable call waiting when you are using your
modem or just set your s9 or s10 register to a longer duration so it doesn't
cut you off.

From: fta@wbb.com
Subject: GUS Max: Mouse movement => scratching sound on amp

The subject sums it all up: Whenever I move my mouse, I hear a
scratching sound from my amplified "puny" speakers that keeps on
scratching (or clicking) until I stop moving the mouse. This happens at
ANY time, whether in a program or out of a program, in DOS or in
Windoze, with a mouse driver or without, with an OS or before the OS
boots (ie. during POST). The only software link I can find is this: the
scratching becomes LOUDER as soon as the mouse driver loads and stays at
that level until a cold boot (but not a warm boot).

My equipment: a green 486dx2/66 (Award 4.05g BIOS and PC Chips
chipset???), a very "noisy" VESA video card with integrated HD IDE (UMC
"Bullet" card), an I/O/FD card, an HD, an FD, and a GUS Max rev 1.8 with
software disks v3.57. My settings are the default all DMA 1, SB IRQ 5,
and GUS IRQ 11. The GUS is hooked to mid-sized "computer" amplified
speakers.

I suspected the mouse driver, and have tried the microsoft mouse
drivers v7.0? and v8.2?, as well as the one that came with my mouse, but
there is no difference. I also tried switching DMAs and IRQs, but
nothing happened. The only other thing I may try is systematically
trying all DMA and IRQ combinations.

In other words, HELP! Plastic mice aren't supposed to make
scratching noises!

Subject: Myst and GUS

Hi, I am having some minor problems with Myst and GUS. Some of the sound
effects are messed up. At first, all the door opening and closing sound
fx as well as most other digital sound fx were messed up...sometimes, I'd
get clicking and sometimes I'd get an annoying beep...and sometimes (very
rarely) I'll hear the correct noise...someone suggested using usnd547.zip
and now it kinda fixed some of the sound fx in that the correct sound
comes out more often now but they dont' work all the time... for
instance, doors dont' always make the creaking sound (most of the time,
you just hear a short clicking sound)... although it has fixed the
annoying beep...also, like in the bell tower when you pull on the large
lever to reset the numbers, it hardly ever gives the correct noise of the
gears rotating... is there some way of fixing all these bugs? Also, it
appears that the digital sounds can only be played on at a time... for
instance, when you turn on the furnace and the tree elevator starts
moving, you only hear the sound of the fire while the sound of the
elevator is just an annoying clicking... is there any way to fix this?
and final question, how come all the animated sequences have no sound?
The Mac version has sound during most of the animated sequences.. (like
the bridge appearing in Channelwood or in Channel wood, when you extend
the pipe...)

Subject: Noisy cards: anti-interference barriers?

Hi, all! In an earlier message, I wrote about a problem I have
with my mouse and my GUS Max. I also get a lot of noise on my GUS
because it is installed two slots away from a combination VESA video
card and IDE harddrive interface (the UMC "Bullet" card). I have to
plug my GUS in one of the VESA slots because the GUS Max is one HUGE
card (listening, Gravis? Integrate some of that stuff!). My floppy and
harddrive hang out over the motherboard, so the only alternative would
be to plug the GUS in a cramped space directly over the CPU and between
the harddrive and the video/ide interface. (Following me so far? :) I
opted to put the GUS right over on the left side, and put everything
else to the right of it.

Anyways, this still means that my GUS Max is two slots away from
the video/ide interface so harddrive accesses occasionally give me a
popping noise. Some of that constant static-like noise may also be due
to the video card. Is there any way to cure this? Some kind of a
barrier available that I can put between my cards?

I can live with this problem (scratching noises whenever I move
my mouse is much more annoying), but any suggestions would be
appreciated (and should probably be submitted to the FAQ as well).

the correct formula there. i.e. tell me what to do, or point me in the
direction or tell me where to download the necessary stuff?.. Thanks in advance.

Subject: Reflections on the new AMD InterWave IC

Concerning the post of the guy whose friend saw a compo in Germany, I think
the news aren't as pink as you paint them. Face value, the GUS claims to be
SB compatible, and the GF1 is one megamondo DSP (dedicated DSP is the marketing
term they made up for it. Add the fact that the rough wiregrams we saw earlier
showed pin-outs for a FM emulator.
I'm not saying it's all bad. Frankly, this is the best news I heard in the
digest for a while (the drivers scheduled for November will beta in December?
Win32 development cut for Warpies? 2PAT goes shareware? I've got the blues).
You can't argue with the fact that it will access more RAM, and like legendary
AMD products across the board, "It Will Cost $50"(tm). I can't wait until
Advanced Gravis goes OEM and we see the Reveal Sound Galaxy US Pro or whatnot
hit the shelves.
Yossi.
PS Oh, a simple workaround for the repost disease would be to simply put the
number of lines in the digest in the topic line. Most command-based readers
offer a scroll feature (VM/CMS MAIL lets you type a number), which basically
solves it.

It's frustrating to get a new GUS digest and have three quarters of it
be echoes of the old digests from broken addresses. One simple solution
is to add one line to the header:
