I was the one that posted about the DRAM chip bending thinger the
other day. =) Anyhow, I got a DRAM diagnostic thing, and it said that
BANK3 at around 100xxx bytes was bad. I was freakin out, so I opened it
up, and touched the chip.. and it practically fell out. The only problem
was it wasn't inserted all the way. Now everything is fine, and it
passed all the DRAM diagnostic stuff. I'd like to thank everyone who
helped me out.. I was amazed at the response I got. I must of gotten at
least 4, or 5 replies. So.. no more questions. FOr the time being. ;)

About a week ago I saw an announcement on Clarinet News that AMD
has made some new chips, "InterWave IC family of chips" for
interactive wavetable audio.

Now, didn't AMD and Gravis make some kind of deal a while ago,
and if so is this the result of his cooperative work, or have
AMD done this on their own?

The wavetable part seems very "gus-ish", don't you think?

I am probably not the only one getting annoyed by
BEGIN PGP PUBLIC KEY BLOCK and 12 lines of rubbish attached to

researched it, so I don't know what it is. I suspect that this
stuff is mainly there for show - you get flamed if you have more

Might it not be a good idea to fix the digestifier to filter out any
submissions containing the Digest header text?
i.e.

Well, this is not possible since I did not write the program and
there is no current way of doing it since the digest program just takes the
input file and change it to the output file and then sends it out so that's
the reason for it so unless you or someone else happen to know how to write
a hack or whatever to Dave DeBry's mailserv program, then there is no way
around it until the Majordomo server is updated on the server machine since
life is never perfect, don't expect the list to be either since I am a full
time student and finals are coming up.

If any such 'suspect' entries were forwarded to the digest admin, then
that would identify any 'rogue' subscriptions quickly, without bothering

There are no such things as suspect entries because some people
simply would type anything for the subject and send it in and some people
would type nothing for the subject header but I for one am unable to be
able to edit the digest until it goes out since I have classes in the

Hello there.
I am one of those people who have just had it with GUS's Sound
Blaster support and went on to get a Sound Blaster 16. Problem.....
how do I get Windows 3.11 to work with both Sound Blaster 16 and the
GUS? If there is a way, please....tell me!!!!
Is there a way I can get my hands on the GUS support for Under a
Killing Moon? It did not come with the game and I was wondering if I
could get it from some ftp site.
Thanks to whoever who can help me. (I notice lots of questions

Well good you got that fixed. In the future you should consider adding
some sort of way to prevent that from happening. Or, if that's not
possible to do with this kind of mailing list, maybe you should make
de-automate it, so that you personally have to approve all subscribe
requests.

There is no way I can prevent this from happening as the mailserv
software is written by Dave DeBry and also, if I deautomate it, you may
not see the digest for a long time since at certain times during the year,
I am extremely busy taking exams and studying since I am a full time
student but we will be moving to Majordomo shortly.

Also, why didn't the digest just fill up completely? If the digest was
subscribed to itself, then all messages going to it would have bounced
back and forth in an infinte loop.

That's because that's what you didn't understand. Pay Attention
next time. all the addresses at mail.orst.edu are really pointing to:
mailserv@mail.orst.edu whether it is gus-X which goes to the input file
or gus-X-request which goes to the server to handle subscribe/unsubscribe
requests and gus-X-owner which goes to the real mailbox. If the digest
gets sent to gus-general@mail.orst.edu, it goes to the input file which
will be the output file when it is used for sending the digest out and also
before, the mail bounced from mcimail.com that was where the original one
is so you sort of get the idea that it gets sent to gus-general which will
goto a loop in the next days digest so it's just like posting the
previous days digest in the next days digest until I had time to delete all
the extra stuff in the input file. The digest is sent from
gus-general-request@mail.orst.edu for a reason so that any bounces would
goto that address.

Well, not quite. Chicago will run 3.1-style drivers, but they are not as
efficient (as I understand it) because the OS has to do some conversion. I
don't remember if it is THUNKing arguments or switching to virtual 286 mode or
just what, but there IS a new driver format that will work more efficiently
with Chicago (not to mention plug and play, etc).

However, that said, even though I don't have any expectation of using OS/2, I
think it would behoove Gravis to finish the OS/2 drivers first. That's because
OS/2 users don't have any Gravis driver, while Windows 95 users will have to
Win3.1 driver which will work, if somewhat sub-optimally.

Doesthe CD-ROM contains all of the patches for all of the melodic and
percussion banks? If so, then GUS is one step closer to being a GS
compatible card. Now, if only Advanced Gravis will release a new driver
(or a new version of playmidi) that supports incremental bank switching.
Now that would make it a killer card.

I've considered getting OS/2 for quite a while, but the biggest thing
that's keeping me back is the lack of VxD support for Windows programs
under OS/2, which means no sound for Windoze apps. Has this changed
under Warp? Will VxD support be added anytime soon? I'd love to dump
Windoze, but there are just too many powerful apps for it, and I want

I know this doesn't belong here so I'll be brief....

OS/2 Warp was designed specifically to run fast with only 4 meg of ram.
The fact that you have a SLOW 386 (25 mhz? get real...) is the reason it
doesn't work well on your machine.

Get yourself a serious machine if you want to run a serious OS. I'm
surprised that MicroCenter accepted your return.

Running my Reble Assult on a 486sx25 8 megs runs fine. I increased the

I'm still having a version mismatch error with my GUS in Windows. The
error message when i enter Windows reads "Version Mismatch error between
ULTRASND.DRV and GRVSULTR.386", and then a "GUS not enabled" message,
which is I guess a result of the mismatch. Now, I've tried a few things
to see if I could get rid of this. First, I downloaded GUS0042.ZIP,
which was updated windows drivers. That didn't help. I deleted my
entire GUS directory and those two files from my windows/system

dunno what's going on. If anybody has any other ideas, please tell me,

Hello... yes, I know that this has been asked before, but because all the
Digests have been bouncing around, I missed the message on this topic.

Can anybody get X-Com to work with the UltraSound properly? I can sometimes
get the digital sound to work, but there's no option in the setup to select
the GUS for music! How can I solve this? Also.. the game freezes when I go
to a ground mission with Gravis sound selected. If I don't use any sound,
then the game works fine...

And for Theme Park.. well, this is really strange. Theme Park, on the box
(or at least on the box I have), says it supports the Gravis UltraSound.
Yet unfortunately, when I installed it, there was no option for using
Gravis UltraSound. Any attempt to use SBOS failed, at least for me.

How much does a RAM expansion chip for the Gravis UltraSound MAX cost
(512KB?)

Problem (1) :

Sometimes, when I rerun the setup software because of an error in a game,
I get after a test : "dma bad data compare (read)" at the SBOS test & GUS DMA
test. I wrote to the digest, and there were 2 replies : one saying I had
to send back my GUS MAX to gravis, and another saying the bios was pestering
me. So on the last advice I changed my clock (which was at 1/6 ACLK) to 1/3 ACLK.
The problem was still there. I tried 1/4 and it was gone. After a while
the problem returned and I put it back to 1/6. The problem wasn't gone.
Putted it back to 1/4. Problem dissapeared.

Problem (2) :

In DOS I can easily record samples using FastTracker 2 or X-Tracker, or
even the Ultrasound Sound Studio (bonus disks) or something similar.

When I start windows, and I try to record using any program like, Wave Lite,
Audio Lab, ... I get nothing but noise and maybe, yes, very far I hear
a peep & click of the original sound. I tried experimenting with the mixer,
but nothing did change. I thought it must be the DMA channels or something,
but all MIDI files play properly. I didn't have the occasion to test WAV
playback in windows yet.

I also know another friend who got Problem (1), and got a 'Parity Error'.

Last Note : Please write drivers for games like Myst, 7th Guest, 11th Hour,
Warcraft, and don't distribute textfile how-to-patch-games-yourself.
Better give us an EXE file containing everything, which searches
the drivers in every game, and substitutes everything like it
should. Make games support NATIVE gus.
Write to computer magazines like PC-Magazine in Belgium,
and Personal Computer Magazine in The Netherlands.
I'm sure that way more people can enjoy the GUS (MAX).

Sincerely & looking forward to an answer,

- Carlo Truyens.
