Hi, I just bought a gus yesterday.. and well, I think it was probly the
best 120 bucks of I have spent in a LONG time. It came with 256k.. and
well, everyone here knows what kind of dead end that got me in. Anyhow,
my uncle gave me 9 goldstar DRAM chips. I searched around, and
eventually found them. Just to make sure they were the right ones, I
checked the gus faq, and matched the chips EXACT model number with the
one in the faq. Ok.. so I open up my computer and I plug one in, BUT the
little metal thingers (Oh yes.. I'm technical) were to wide for the
slot. Now this didn't make sense.. the faq said I had the write model,
but they didn't fit. Determined to pay my internet bill rather than
spend 30 bucks on DRAM, me and my friend BENT the leads inward.. and they
fit. Seeing this could really screw something up.. i only popped in half
a meg. Well.. it detected it, and EVERYTHING worked right. So now I
have a whole meg.. anything I should be careful of? Everything works out
all right.. but the chips wern't inserted quite right. Oh, anyone know
what the 16-bit DMA's will do for me as opposed to the 8-bit ones?
Thanks alot..

Subject: AIL 3.0?

I sent this question to the digest a couple of days ago, but since things
were screwy, my message never got posted.

My question is, what is are these new AIL 3.0 drivers? I know that there
is already a beta copy somebody uploaded to epas, but I'd rather wait for
Gravis's. Are these new patches just for new games (like Warcraft that I
keep hearing about in conjunction with these new drivers), are they a
complete update for all patches, or what?

Also, someone at Gravis told me that these new drivers would not require
Ultramid anymore. That would be a very welcome change.

Thanks in advance for anybody who can tell me about these new drivers.

The truth is we are working on both and although I do not know where you got
the information that they where going to be ready last month, the fact is
that the OS2 beta are on schedule and due to be released end of this month
and Megaem well that one I don't know when. It is being worked on and many
features being added, but quality software (drivers) does take time and we
will not release any drivers before their time..

Thnx for the inquiry

Ok has ANYONE got this game to work with the Gravis Ultrasound, as
usual the Ultrasound is in the Sierra/Dynamix SoundSet program as a
choice, but when you run the game, it either crashes or has no
sound.. SBOS works, but there's no digital sound, just crackels and
pop's... I'm using the CD-ROM version of the game.. I've tried MegaEm
but that doesn't work either.. please, if anyone knows what to do,
let me in on it!! Thanks..

The Ail3 drivers that someone loaded to EPAS work
fine with PGA486 golf. Just load ultramid and copy the
digital Umid.dig over the soundblaster driver and the
program works great. I am sure they will work with Warcraft.

I don't want to start OS wars here, but forget Warp, if have less than
8M bytes. I have 386/25 with 8 M bytes, but its interactive response
was so slow ( I mean when you move mouse to other windows and click buttons,
..etc.) - and I was not even running any applications.
The response was always one step behined which was very annoying and
gave me a feeling that I was running Windows/NT on PC/XT with 512K :).
I also expected a lot from warp, but I was so disappointed and returned it
to MicroCenter.

I suggest Advanced Gravis to concentrate on making reliable driver
on Win32 platforms rather than wasting their energe and time.

Well good you got that fixed. In the future you should consider adding
some sort of way to prevent that from happening. Or, if that's not
possible to do with this kind of mailing list, maybe you should make
de-automate it, so that you personally have to approve all subscribe
requests.

Also, why didn't the digest just fill up completely? If the digest was
subscribed to itself, then all messages going to it would have bounced
back and forth in an infinte loop.

I've got the same problem with my P90 with Intel Motherboard (Neptune II
chipset). Someone mentioned that the Pentium:VME switch to QEMM would solve
this, but version 7.04 doesn't recognise it. Perhaps upgrading to 7.5 will
solve this; has anyone done so?

Hey Jerry,

At the Epas submit directory, there exists a few archives by some
guys named Elysium (?) Entertainment, that all start with "e". One of them
is i think E_guitr2.zip. This has some nice GM patches that sonder better
than the stock patches, at least i think they do... It also include some
non-standard GM patches like a 12-string, a nice lead guitar, and Jimi's
wah-guitar. Imagine Jimi playing lead on Doom.
These guys have also released a drum set which i haven't tried yet.
There is also another set of Drums somewhere that i also haven't tried.
They also released an alpha version of their reed instruments, like
sax, etc. Haven't tried it. Waiting for final.
I'd also appreciate a source for some reasonable GM patches for the
strings and the drums, although i've always thought the drum patches weren't
too bad; they were usually better than on the AWE32... Also, any good brass
substitutes?

Subject: KQ7 and GUS...

The TEST runs fine in the install, but to get music in the game, you
still have to setup the GUS for 8-bit patches, and the MIDI Mapper to one
of the non-patch-caching setups (Ultra 256, Ultra 512, Ultra 1024).
Then, use Media Player or something to load the appropriate .MID file
(LOAD256.MID, LOAD512.MID, LOAD1024.MID).

For those of you who are using the latest drivers, and sound does NOT
play during .AVI playback, you can try fiddling around with buffer
settings and the like, but the easiest fix for me was to just copy the
5.21 drivers into the WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory, and voila, everything
works fine...

Apperently you are using Qemm, you should consider using this option:

" PENTIUM:VME:xx (P:VME:xx) tells QEMM to intercept software
interrupt xx (where xx is a hexadecimal number between 0 and FF)
in protected mode before passing it to a real-mode handler. By
default, QEMM takes advantage of the Virtual Mode Extensions
features, available on Pentiums and some 80486 systems, to pass
most software interrupts directly to real-mode programs, thus
saving the overhead that would be required to pass these
interrupts from protected-mode handlers to real-mode handlers.
The PENTIUM:VME:N parameter (described in Chapter 7 of the
Reference manual) tells QEMM to intercept all software
interrupts in protected mode; PENTIUM:VME:xx tells QEMM to
intercept only the single interrupt xx. See the description of
the PENTIUM:VME:N parameter for more information. "

The parameter PENTIUM:VME:N worked for me with the same problem and the
same config (Except for the SCC-1). Hoppefully this works for you.

Subject: MidiSoft recording studio

Back when I got my GUS, sometime around the beginning of the year or
so, Midisoft Recording Studio was bundled with the card. This was on
disks 2.06 I think. Now, as updates came out I got them installed
them, made sure they worked, and wrote over the original disks with
the new installation stuff. All is well. After a reorganisation,
however, I no longer have the Midisoft stuff, and it is also not on
the disks. In fact, it doesn't appear to be on any of the disk sets
I've downloaded from the GUS mirror site. My current set is 3.53 I
think...

So, to get to the point, is this software still supposed to be
bundled with the card? If so, how do I get a copy? In fact, even if
it isn't, how do I get a copy? Is it on the internet somewhere?

Thanks for any help.

Try running simple things like SBOS etc..if it looks normal on the screen and
it seems like it is working with no sound, plug a set of headphones into the
amp out and then into the line out to see if there is sound produced.. don't
rely on your speakers. Also make sure that the scanner card and the
Ultrasound card do not conflict in addressing, dma or irq.. and also remember
that the Gus card has a hidden address which works like this. 100+your base
address is your midi address.
