Subject: "Manley" OS/2 drivers

Yesterday I installed Manley's newest (registered) GUS drivers for
OS/2. I tried The 7th Guest. It ran perfectly with (CD-)voices and
midi music, exactly the same as in plain DOS. That's great!

Today I'll try Return to Zork. Besides ultramid, it runs gf166.com
from the ultramid directory. Can anyone tell me what this program
does? What has it to do with midi?

(I hope I didn't misspell gf199.com)

Subject: 16 bit digital recording on GUS?

Hi Gussers,

I was thinking:
If you disconnect the adc from the gus and give it a direct
digital input from for example a cd-player (you'll need a
chip to convert the signal, but that is not too difficult)
it might be possible to record 16 bit with very high quality!
So you won't need the daughterboard, you'll just need some
other chips (this will be cheaper than the daughterboard!)
and the quality is better!
The problem in here is: Where are the 16 bit lines in the
gus?
any comments on this?

Subject: Buying a GUS soundcard

I am trying to decide if I should buy a GUS soundcard or go with
the "wave" Soundblaster. I have been reading about incompatability
problems, and frankly they worry be as unfixable.

I would like "game" compatability, but I'm willing to sacrifice this
for good MIDI performance.

I had a microsoft sound system. It was poor. This was replaced
with an Ensonique card (from Gateway). This card had many bugs,
and was incompatible with everything. The final straw came when
Ensonique's help desk (the Gateway people were useless) admitted
to known incompatabilities and was giving me instructions over
the phone on how to rewire (including soldering) the CD adaptor
cable.

The Ensonique went back for credit and I bought a Turtle Beach
Tropez card. This card still will not record (static emits from
both speakers and nothing is recorded), I had to install EMM386
or (so I was told by Turtle) the card would not run correctly.
The windows games are slowed to such an extent that they are not
playable, and the "help desk" has not been able to fix the problem,
despite the promise of a call from an engineer (supposed to call
yesterday). I realize that this kind of "help" is standard in
the industry, but when the driving software will not set the
interrupt on the card, I have to wonder about the quality of some
of the boards.

But when the only thing that runs correctly is "DOOM", you have
to wonder . . .

This brings me to my questions:

1. If I get a gravis, will all the adaptors come with the card.
I had to buy a joystick port to MIDI adaptor from Turtle, and it
still isn't here yet.

2. Exactly how compatible is the GUS?

3. Is their software relatively bug free?

4. How is their help - really?

5. What is a good "street" price of a GUS? With MIDI, sample
memory, and the appropriate driving software.

6. Has anybody expeienced similar problems with "other" soundcards
and how does problem resolution compare with Gravis?

Thanks,
George
PS: If anybody cares, I have a Gateway 2000 4DX66 with 16 Meg of
memory, two hard drives, and smartdrive installed. There is no
TSR stuff and I'm running DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1.

PPS: I finally did get to set the interrupt on the Tropez card
by editing the system.ini file. I don't want to have to do this.

Has anybody else tried the game Warcraft? Megaem works great with it, but
it uses the DOS4GW dos extender. I thought Megaem was NOT supposed to work
with protected mode games? Just thought it was very peculiar, and has
anybody tried and gotten megaem to work with other 32 bit games?

Use the windose level controller to drop the line in by say 10db ,assuming
you connect the lineout from th PSR to the linein of the gus mixer. This
was source of noise on by system, not the midi note off signal

Hi folks....

I was wondering if anyone knew about a program for voice recognition
in Windows for Gravis?
I'll be really happy if anyone knew of a shareware or freeware
program, but since I am not THAT blueeyed (or stupid) I would be glad
if it was a commercial program out too.

any way I can get a copy? E-mail address? snail mail? phone? what $$?
I live in San Francisco, USA. E-mail would be my perfered method of

I have the SLDC.SYS 1.73a, MSCDEX 2.23 and running Windows for Workgroups 3.11.
I have the drive hooked up to my GUS MAX card and am experiencing
intermittent lockups when in Windows (usually when running MYST).

I called SONY, and not surprisingly, they told me all my problems
were caused by the GUS MAX interface. What drivers does Gravis
reccomend for use with the MAX?

Anyone else had this experience? Any guidance or suggestions
would be very welcome.

Does Gravis have a Faxback document on troubleshooting CDROM
connections in general?

Thanks.

Somebody asked about Load Runner II, well, All I can say is that it sounds
WAY better on my GUS than on the PAS or SB. It uses Windows GM for music
and any Windows Wave device that you have installed. Worth playing!!1

It sounds superb in Windows, lots of nice MIDI music. And of course puts the
Soundblaster stuff to shame!
I dunno about the DOS one.

Does anyone else have this? I just purchased it, and it's by Electronic
Arts (which means Origin, blech). At any rate, here's my problem: I can
only get sound to work with sbos. I believe it's protected mode, and
there is no option for GUS, that's for sure. With sbos, the sound cuts
and goes, and makes it pretty worthless (crucial clues in dialogue are
just junk).

Complicating the situation, my sbos is acting weird. Something about the
sboslib, I did get it to work, however I cannot remember the version
number. The install.cfg is in code, so I cant text edit it. I'm
stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated before I lambaste the
Origin tech line.

Thanks!

I am trying to run wacky wheels on my new GUS MAX, but I can't get the
joystick to work properly.

I already had a gameport on my computer and I want to keep using that
because I don't know how to disable it and I want to use the port for Midi
without buying a spilt box (if anybody has schematics for such a box,
please inform me). I disabled the GUS joystick with ultrinit -dj in
autoexec.bat, but the joystick just won't work. If I run SETUP or WW, the
computer hangs and I must press the RESET button to get it rebooted
(CNTR/ALT/DEL doesn't work).

What must I do to get it working? The gamepad is a 4 button digital one (not
analog).

I just tried WarCraft by Blizzard Entertainment, but couldn't get any
digitized sound from it. I was able to get SoundBlaster FM music
(with SBOS), but no speech...

WarCraft runs through the DOS4GW extender, so MEGAEM is not an option.
The drivers that come with the game is some sort of AIL drivers, that's
all I found out about them (the drivers are not the regular 32-bit DLL).

Anyone had better luck than me here? Or know where I could find an upgrade
patch for the GUS?

Would be pleased if I got any quick replies!

Ok, I've seen a lot of information being said about WinG and
and games that use it. I for one would *love* to see WinDoom!
I know several people have expressed interest in this and no one
seems to be providing.

My question specifically: WinDoom - Where is it?

Is it commercial? Shareware? Vaperware? (as of today?)

Any information, of course, will be appreciated!

Thanks,
