I vote for a Games/General split. The General can be for hardware,
incompatibility issues, and since we ALREADY have a .music group, there
should be no more stupid qubbling!!

in reply to Ariff Sidi's post in GUS Daily Digest V16 #12;

AS> program plays I only get the drum beats, no melody. Also, the
AS> game will now start without problem and I get the sound FX but
AS> again the music is only the drum beats and no melody.. what
AS> could the problem be??

of course this is just my theory, but it seems to be pretty thorougly
backed in fact.

both soundset and the game, when you correct the mistake made by the
soundset program, do NOT play melodic sounds - you have the adlib driver
selected.

the thing which comes to mind is that they are using the OPL2/OPL3 chips
on the Adlib or SB (OPL2) or SBproV2 (OPL3), which are the FM synthesis
chips from Yamaha.

Okay, but drum sounds, unless you are a fan of classic analogue drum
sounds (lord knows there's enough of us, but not too many gamers I
imagine tend to enjoy, or be able to pick out, a 606 bd from a 808 bd or
a 808 hihat from a 909 hihat (although that last one is kinda easy))..
but i digress..

drum sounds, analogue ones, aren't extremley true to form of the real
thing, obviously.

and what do we have here;

 Directory of G:\SIERRA\MTECH\SOS

			 <DIR> 10-31-94 6:08a
 . <DIR> 10-31-94 6:08a
DRUM BNK 5,404 10-31-94 6:08a
DRUM32 DIG 160,043 10-31-94 6:08a

^^^^

This file is simply sampledata for drums. If you take a look through
the file using list, or whatever, it's unmistakably 8-bit sampledata, or
you can use playfile to prove that.

So it uses the FM synthesis for the music itself - and the digital driver
for the drums and sound effects. The drum.bnk, well, that's just for the
Adlib which has no digital output, so the patch bank for the card is
remapped to include in that case drums/"sound-effects".

a long winded explanation, sure, but i think it's right :) hehe..

You don't need to. Just plug the cable into the Mistsumi audio input.
If you don't get sound, you have it plugged in backwards. If you flip
it, and still get no sound, then you have a faulty connection. I
got my Panasonic 562 with a soundblaster 16, and then UPGRADED to
the GUS Max, and that's what I did. Sound works fine. There should
have been a manual addendum in the box with the MAX saying to do
this (in with the addvertisisng for the software deals). Whatever you
do, I would NOT suggest soldering ANYTHING to the GUS. Especially if
you don't have to.

While on the topic of the Panasonic 562b, can anybody tell me for
absolute certain that it is a multi-session capable drive, and if all
models of that drive make (the 562b) are or not?

Is it legal to upload the HMI drivers to EPAS so we can use them to
replace the EarthSiege drivers? If so, can you please upload em?

I just got the new patch and when I ran the newly patched game I
got a nasty surprise. It won't let me load any of my previous saved
games. I even tried the -loadgame switch but then I just get a black
screen of death. There were two patches at the ftp.uml.edu site. I think
I used the smaller one. Was that my mistake? Or do all the patches just
fuck you? I want my saved game back! I'll try using the other patch and
if that doesn't work I'll be pissed.

There's a demo for a new game distributed by EA that has full gus
support (looks like HMI, but I couldn't identify the files). The game
is called Relentless and it's available via anon ftp on

  ea.com:/pub/demos/relentless/dos/demo.exe

It's sort of a cross between Ultima 7 and Alone in the Dark and it runs
in SVGA mode. My apologies if this has been mentioned.

Newsgroups: alt.games.doom,comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.misc
Our T1 microwave link to the Internet is down. PACnet is working on the
problem, but until it's resolved, our Internet connection is via a completely
saturated 56k link. We expect this to be fixed today sometime, but...

This affects the Gravis Ultrasound ftp area, the doom ftp area, the gus mailing
lists, the skunk-works mailing lists and anything else homed inside orst.edu.

Expect *very* slow response time.

I have the newest GUS drivers and yes the "MIDI now sounds like shit".
Gravis (Hi Paul) told me that new drivers will be available soon:-)

Another problem:-(

I'm now using DOOM 2 version 1.7a and the sound effects still sound
terrible. It seems almost as if an echo device was switched on...
MIDI sound is OK.

Gravis (again) informed me that DOOM works only on some systems. Don't
know why mine is one of the non-working systems.

BTW, when I had my old ultrasound (not GUSMAX) card MIDI and DOOM worked great.

The problem I had with sound in Tie running MegaEm has now been corrected. It
seems that loading Stacker 4.0 high via the DPMS program that comes with it
conflicts with MegaEm. After loading Stacker low I now get both digital and midi
music whereas before I only had patchy midi music.

Thanks to everyone who mailed me in response to my post and especially Mike who
supplied me with working system files :)

Subject: Ultramix problem

I have an annoying problem with ultramix in Windows.
I have the latest GUS disks and win drivers (whatever version
they are).
I haven't noticed them before, but recently, ultramix does not
save my settings when I re-enter windows.
Specifically, line and cd outputs are reset to the lowest settings
( -63 db, I think) whenever I start windows. Yes, I save my
ultramix settings before I exit it.
So what's the deal? It's not a major problem, but a bit annoying.

Subject: US Experience & FX001D

To UltraSound users,

I've troubles with the UltraSound Experience. When I start up, the 3rd screen
is the menu, not the copyrights. It's just skips all parts, except the menu,
even when I use Alt-1 ... Alt-4.
Using a two years old version of HSC interact, I've looked into the 'script'.
I think that the problem is that my mitsumi FX001D v1.16 drivers react differently
compared to some other CD-ROM players (well, I'm only sure about a panasonic).
Using Media Player, when I press the [Play] button, I get an error, cause track 1
is data, not audio. With a panasonic I don't get an error, the panasonic simply
ignores the play command, cause track 1 is data, not audio.
Is this a fault of my mitsumi drivers? Is this a fault of the panasonic drivers?
(Is trying to play a datatrack specified somewhere (red/white book)?) Is this a fault
of the US Experience script?
I don't blame anyone making faults/mistakes (never did, never will for any problem),
I just want (a) solution(s) for this problem.
I tried to alter the script, but my knowledge of HSC interact is too small.
Does someone know a(nother) solution (new mitsumi drivers, patch to ULTRA.IW)?
