for something that does 3d sound, there it is.
it was up on the gus site in the submit dir. if you can't find it e-mail me

I'm using Mitsumi FX001D (with its interface card), and it works fine.
It cat use DMA, so processor overhead is very low. Only problem is that
you need to do your own audio cable to gus (shouldn't be a problem, if
you can find right connector).

Elsewhere in the Digest:

Did you enable GUS line-in? It can be done in ultrinit, ultramid and
emuset. There is also a programs which can control line-in directly.

Ok, a couple of days ago i posted the site ftp.umanitoba.ca which should
have been ftp.cc.umanitoba.ca otherwise it doesn't seem to know where to
send the request. Appologies to all those who have tried the other
address. Please try it again.

For those to whom this is new information, i've set up a directory
(pub/gus) at ftp.cc.umanitoba.ca which contains just a few files which
are of interest to people who are starting out with a GUS card and want
the latest drivers for dos/win. There's a few other goodies there too,
but not too many. So far it contains the latest GUS disk set (without
the bonus software of powerchords and recording session), gus356?.zip,
and the update to the windows drivers usnd547.zip (i may have poor memory
here). You'll also find the 19 megs of pro-patches, a windows driver
allowing the use of your computer keyboard as a midi input device, and a
few other things may pop up in there upon request. There's also a copy
of the latest FAQ (as far as i know anyways).

This Solution suggested by Marc Tardiff from Prodigy for the Qemm
7.5/Megaem problem. Try the switch Pentium:VME in you Qemm line
(Config.sys) This is supposed to work on 486's as well as Pentiums.
This info is supposed to be in the Tech notes for Qemm.

>2x cdrom drive, and instead of getting the daughter-board for my gravis,

Vin,

I installed this exact same drive in my system over the weekend. I have a 3.4
Gus and everything is working fine. Just as you described, the internal audio
cable that came with the kit normally goes between the drive and the
controller card. The connectors are too small to fit the 4-pin connector
(actually a header) on the Gus, on which the pins are spaced at 0.1".

I went to the local electronic parts shop and found a 4-pin connector to match
the header on the Gus. You can usually find them near Molex and other
connectors at a parts shop. I then just cut off the small connector for the
controller card, crimped on the new pins for the larger connector, and
inserted them in the right order (Left-Ground-Ground-Right) for the Gus. After
fixing the left channel pin that wasn't inserted right, it worked fine.

The only problem I had was that after running Winders and exiting, the
internal sound was shut off. However, "ultrinit -o" turns the output back on.

One other way to hook it up is to use the internal cable normally (drive to
card) and use an external cable to run the audio into the external input on
the Gus. The benefit of this is that you can then adjust the volume in
software on the Gus, unless you have a 3.7 or newer Gus.

I hope this helps.

John

Most people now have FX with earthsiege and a drum beat but no melody.

Yes, it's quite possible. get yourself the Adagio package. It
includes (amongst other things) a command line midi player 'mp'
that (IMHO) is better than 'playmidi' is on DOS. It's
actually quite neat, as it will use *all* your available hardware
to play the midi file. If you have (for example) 2 GUS'es in your
system, the player wil split up the work between the cards, making
possible up to 64 voice polyphony! It can also use FM (yeuch!) based
cards, and external keyboards... It also has an X-based interface
which (I believe) gives you a running score as a file plays, and
a few other goodies. (I haven't checked this out myself yet.)

The ultrasound patches is accesed by mounting your dos filesystem
under /dos. The player then get's them from /dos/ultrasnd/midi or
/dos/ultrasnd/midi2. I *think* these are hard compiled into the code,
but I suppose it would be a quick patch to make it work from an evironment
variable. mp also uses the same, but extended .cfg files that
playmidi uses. Oh, and of course the playback takes next to 0
CPU time...

You need to mount your dos partition containing the ultrasound patches or
copy the patches into your linux filesystem.

Subject: Separate digests, my $.02 worth

I have been on this digest since the very beginning. Last year when it
split into 2 digests, the idea was to have a MUSIC digest and a GAMES
digest. Somewhere along the way it became a MUSIC digest and a GENERAL
digest instead of GAMES digest.
Traffic on the MUSIC digest is so light that it is a waste of Vince's
time as well as anyone that posts to it. I ALWAYS post to both anyway
because I know how few people read the MUSIC digest.
There's ALWAYS midi and music questions in the GENERAL digest instead of
the MUSIC digest so why don't we do this....

Once again TRY to split the digest the way it was originally supposed to
be split...

1) Scrap the MUSIC digest and direct everyone to post music questions to
   the GENERAL digest.

2) Create a GAMES digest and instruct everyone NOT to post hardware,
music or general operation questions to it. Only questions directly
concerning games, patches for games, fixes for games, etc FOR GAMES!

I use my GUS for music and I don't think redirecting MUSIC questions to
the GENERAL digest is going to be a big problem for anyone, so long as
people keep the GAMES discussions out of it.

Any comments?

Kevin

Well, I figured out what was wrong. My bios (AMI) was eating up too much
memory (I have 8 megs) and even with a boot disk I didn't have enough memoru.
The readme.txt says you need at least 7,000,000 bytes but I think they are
wrong. I had 7,314,324 and it didn't work.

My solution..... I upgraded to 16 megs! :)

Mark
