The limitation (perhaps partly due to the Windows programming interface)
is that you must load ALL your patches from a single bank (I guess
I mean all your melodic patches from one bank, and all your drums
from another). The bank is not selected by a MIDI message. The only
application I know which supports banks is PowerChords, and even there you
just have to type the number of your chosen bank into a dialog.

Can somebody tell me if there is software available to
perform direct-to-disk recording using the gusMAX.

I want to do stereo 16-bit recording at 44.1kHz to
a hard drive. Of course, this assumes that my hard
drive is fast enough to consume the data, which it is.

Any info appreciated ... Maarten

How can I extract samples from midi files or mod files?

Oh, and one more question. If I was not going to be doing any sampling,

Subject: Getting digest's messages individually. I vote yes!

Hi, some people have talked about the possibility of getting the messages
individually instead of the whole at a time. I also agree with this approach,
most of the list don't use the digest approach (or give it as a option).
Receiving individual messages could offer us the following advantages:
- faster response, since you don't have to wait until the end of the day to get
  the messages.
- because of this we get more real-time interactivity between users.
- easier to respond, since you don't get the whole digest in your editor when
you want to add some quotes.
- more responses, because of the point above.
- easier to store, we can store the useful messages and erase the others.
- less complains from users arguing because of long digest.
- those "whole replied digests" could be easily identified and erased.
- other points and you can add.

So what people think? hey list-administrator! is this possible?

Don't ask me why, but this works to get Nativ GUS support w/ both
sound effects and music. (Anyother configuration actually locks up
computer)

Anyway, I was folloing around with it with my friend, and finally
gave up and decided to use the GUS just for digital fx and my MT-32
(connected via an MPU-401) for music. (I know, it doesn't support
the MT-32, just GM, but I have a patch that reprograms the MT-32 as
semi-GM). ANYWAY, to our surprise, when testing music, the music
came not out of the MIDI port, but out of the GUS! (Their
semi-modlike digital music, that is). Don't ask why. It works for
us.

So, GUS for digital, MPU-401 for music. You _might_ need to actually
have an MPU-401 so the setup program doesn't say otherwise, though.

Yet another Strange, but true! story/adventure w/ the GUS. :-)
Maybe someone can explain?

Gravis has yet to release an "offical" GUS or GUSMax driver for OS/2. However
Robert Manley HAS and he says they work just fine under WARP. I can say they
work (mostly) fine under 2.1(1). The problem has to do with the amount of
swapping needed to load MMPM to play a system sound. For reasons I don't
understand, the SB drivers don't have this delay. Once MMPM IS swapped in,
remaining sounds play nearly instantly...

Haven't tried it yet, but thanks. Funny is that in the setup, EarthSiege
supports GUS for digital, but not for music, yet when I test the sounds,
it plays a drumbeat for the music test. Even stranger, I recognized none
of the drums, so it was either a custom patch or a 'mod' type music.

Hmm... I were the custom patches, such as the piano patches? Didn't buy
the CD yet, but I'm planning to buy it, but only for the audio portion.
Being a CD-ROM-less user, I won't be able to use any of the software. Oh
well, I guess that's one reason to buy a CD-ROM drive other than for WC3.
So, is it okay if any of you can upload any patches from the CD-ROM to EPAS?

To anyone who hasn't found out yet, the managers of the GUS FTP
sites are running behind a little and all of the newest files are still on
the submit diectories. This includes the GUS v3.56 installation disks,
Propatches 3.0, Windows v5.47 drivers and other such. To get to the sites
with the submit dirctory available go to either the EPAS or Oregon State
FTP Sites, (archive.epas.utoronto.ca, or archive.orst.edu), unfourtunately
neither of these sites carry the rest of the files. Also for those
without direct FTP access, search for the Oregon State Gopher, the main
one and then select 6, 7, then 8
Also, about the problems with Mega-Em discussed several issues ago
they were involving QEMM on some 486's and Pentiums in which the error EMM
Incompatability would be displayed. Changing to EMM fixed the problem,
but I never found a way to fix the problem, if anyone knows I would
appreciate hearing the solution.
Last, about submitting responses to the Digest, the easiest way to
get portions of old digests in is to compose the mail offline, and then
upload it. This way you can use a decent editor instead of a crappy mail
program and will be able to do cut and paste. Another solution is to do
it in Windows, were every program has that ability anyways.

To the guy who asked why do I cat the sound file to /tmp before playing
it rather than just catting straight to the audio device. I do it
so after it finishes playing, you still have the sample on disk and can
move it to a place where you'd like to keep it. If you don't cat it to a
file before playing, you'll only be able to hear it once...

Personally, I use VAX/VMS. I always extract the entire Digest into
a file, then go through it with an editor deleting the stuff I'm
not interested in. I then send any replies by quoting just the
bits from what by now is a much shorter file. I think I'd do
much the same if I received the Digest on my PC. Some mailers
might only quote the part of the message you have 'selected'
rather than all of it. I read about an un-digestifier program
(parhaps in the FAQ, or the listserver help?) which would
break the thing into individual messages.

>Can't we have each message send indivudually? This allows us to

>encourage more discussion and will better help the people asking

I prefer the Digest. I would probably unsubscribe if I had loads
of individual GUS messages coming in throughout the day, and it
would take me longer to read. Some listservers allow you to
choose between Digest and mailing-list format - I haven't heard
that ours does.

You best solution seems to be to try to find the undigestifier
program.

Sorry, the wc3 demo is distributed with PC Gamer's CDROM issue,
you will NEVER want to download it somewhere... :)

don't try this if you have a GUS, speech skips as usual...
the opening scene is worth seeing anyways,

BUT

the gameplay itself, well, sucks. even if i switched to vga
mode and get a better frame rate, i can't even successfully
shoot a ship (isn't it that i have disability to play a flightsim?!)

my conclusion: i don't like the game by judging from the
game play, sorry...

Apart from wc3, anyone got the sound from Dragon's Lore (right?) demo?
it seems it hates my gus, and it seems it can use Megaem, but nah...

I seem to be having some MAJOR problems with my regular GUS (1 meg) and
my motherboard. I have a GVT motherboard, with a VIA chipset. Here's a
short list:
1: SBOS refuses to load, howling about NMI being disabled.
2: megaem won't give me decent sound from tie fighter
3: i can't get sound from doom2 that is 1/10th as good as I got with my
   last motherboard on doom1.
4: Soundset locks up my computer continuously
5: EarthSiege, Tie Fighter, System Shock, Doom2, Armored Fist, and nearly
every other game I've tried didnt' work. If memory serves me, I got some
sound from Wacky Wheels shareware game.

This is getting frustrating, since I've tried many other sound cards, and
prefer my gus FAR more than any of the rest.

I had heard rumors of a workaround from Gravis/Forte about motherboards
with NMI disabled, and hopefully someone has more info as to the validity
of this.
