Subject: AIL Drivers-what are they?

I have come across two games now that use some kind of AIL driver
that I've never seen before. Both PGA486 Golf and the demo for
Warcraft seem to use them. The file names are-

sblaster.dig filesize: 2,834
sblaster.mdi filesize: 14,956

I'm just using the SB files for an example, there are other drivers
for SBPro, PAS, and more, each having its own set of MDI and DIG
files. When the files are viewed, the first one has AIL3DIG in it and the
second has AIL3MDI inside. The files sizes are much smaller than
the usual Miles drivers.

Are these in fact AIL drivers and can they be patched to work with the
GUS. I haven't been able to do it.

Thanks

Ummmm .... I think I`m not getting what you're saying here. I'm talking
about the GUS 3.56 sofrtware not installing correctly. You talk about
the windows swapfile. Huh? Do you mean to say the GUS v3,56 installation
has something to do with the windows swapfile? How can it use the windows
swapfile when windows is not even loaded?

Additional info: It stops with a critical error which only lets me press
ESC to exit after it starts scanning the harddrive for windows.

Any help so I can finally get the software fully installed would be
most appreciated. Otherwise, I have to use ol' Mr. SB16. :(

Hi, Jean-Pierre. Go straightaway to your BIOS setup screens and check the
speed of the AT Bus clock. This clock speed setting also affects the DMA
circuit speed. According to several sources, including a large post from
the prior days of the GUS list and the author of the excellent AMI Bios setup
program AMISE260.ZIP, the DMA circuitry in PC's does not work well faster
than 5mHz. AMISE260 will test and report the operating speed of the circuitry,
but for a 486DX2/66 (33 mHz motherboard speed) CLK/4 (sometimes called CLKIN/4
or CLK2/4) should be the setting for the AT Bus speed. 33/4 ~ 8mHz, the proper
speed of the bus. That setting is not to make your PC run faster, it is to
adjust the motherboard for different CPU's.
Correspondingly, if you were to overclock your CPU to 40mHz externally (NOT
reccommended) you should select CLK2/5.

If your clock is already running correctly, then well, I dunno what to tell
ya!

Cheers,

btw, Armored fist cannot be gotten to use digital sound on the GUS, as

Subject: Multitracking software.

Hi there,
I was wondering if anybody out there knows of good digital
recording multitracking software (commercial or shareware), that is capable of
simultaneous playback and record. With Ultrasound Studio, I can separately record
tracks and then mix them, but I can't seem to find a way to record a new track while
playing another.
Also, what would be the major limiting factor for the number of tracks
that could be simultaneously played backed (I'm talking about minutes long
recordings being played back at 44.1 or 48kHz, not small patches). Would it be my
CPU, DSP processor, amount of memory or hard drive speed? (ie. would it be worth
replacing a IDE VLB HD with a SCSI HD?).
Currently I have a 486-66-DX2 VLB, 8 Mb RAM, 540 Mb IDE drive and a
Gravis Ultrasound Max. My current goal is to turn my system into a stereo 4-track
recording studio. I'd appreciate any help that anyone has to offer.

There is a new file on EPAS, USND547.ZIP, which contains revised Windows
drivers purporting to fix the "chirp" at the end of wavefile playback. From
looking at the README inside the ZIP, these files probably came from an SDK,
and this is not an official Gravis release.

Anyway, while the chirp is reduced, it is still audible. Rev. 5.34
(5/16/94) still appears to be the most recent Windows driver with clean audio.

Hello,
Has anyone had any luck in getting Police Quest IV CD-version to
work with their GUS, in dos?
It worked in Windows without any problems but very slowly (like
any game running under windows).
But in dos the game works fine without sound. When I choose the
GUS for sound the game dumps a lot of text on the screen (it looks
like contents of registers and something about insufficient memory;
I have 614k conventional memory) and jumps back to dos or just hangs.
If I set up pq4cd for sound blaster and use SBOS then the game
just re-boots my pc (486/33 8meg).

Subject: Sampling, Compression and Wav files

Hello,

I'm a new GUSMAX owner, and I'm yet playing around with it to find out
what can it do. I've tried a little to do some sampling with it, and
I've got some questions about it.

1- I've tried ADPCM compression to reduce space, but the sound has some
clicks every second or so. Is it inherent to this kind of compression ?
The sound is perfect under every other kind of setting (no compression
   or A-Law, U-Law).

2- All kinds of compression aren't recognized under windows. Listening to
an ADPCM compressed Wav is terrible : the file is considered 8 bit, no
compression ! I've seen some Windows codec for ADPCM in my multimedia
setup, probably here from Video for Windows, but they aren't used. Is it
possible to make Windows recognize the different kinds of compression ?

Thanks in advance,
Thierry

Well I don't really know why.. these are marketing type descions, however

DOS drivers. None. There is hope, though. I'd put money on Gravis writing
Win95 (the new name for Chicago) drivers. I don't know when they would do
something like this, it may be a long time (since win95 will support 16-bit
old drivers), but if they do write one, that means it will be 32-bit and will
work with NT.

Subject: Y adapter for joyhandles

I just bought a Y cable so that I could use my AG gamepad and Joystick,
but for some lame reason, the buttons on whatever joystick is plugged
into port B do not work. WHY?!?! Would I have to buiild myself a
'smart adapter' with a few electronics to make both joys work correctly?

You can get a Gravis Y Cable for about$8.00 which will support two
4 button joysticks just fine, I don't know the pinout for them but I do
know that what is 1234 on the first joystick is 3412 on the second (the
buttons) so they use the same pins for those, and the first joystick has
four axes control, and the second has two. Hope it helps.
