We are changing out the boot disk on gaia Saturday morning, starting at 7:30.
Expected downtime will be 4 hours. Gopher, ftp and news service will be
unavailable during this time. ccmail traffic to the Internet will be routed
through a different mail relay so service will not be interrupted.

Thats what I hear. I had a friend interview for the job of designing the GF2 at AMD.
He couldn't give me any specifics other than it was for Gravis and it would replace
the GF1. Too bad he didn't take the position.

I'll add my "most wanted features", but don't think this could influence
the design of GF2, if it's even running. I've heard this project was stopped
a long time ago already, and there are no signals from Gravis about GF2.
But anyway, this is what I would like to have implemented there:

1. The design with patches on the disk is just the best one for me. Any
flash memory would be to expensive and I think the loading times are
just great, feel really comfortable with this.
2. The rollover feature is great as well, should stay there.
3. At least 24 voices on 44.1kHz is a MUST
4. I would prefer some kind of non-linear sample interpolation to make
   pitch shifting sound more natural.
5. Effect processor with effect/dry mix for every sample
6. Resonant filters
7. Secondary envelope generator
8. LFO with definable waveform (using s short sample)
9. A complex modulation scheme, fully configurable (like pitch enveloping)
10. MORE MEMORY !!!
11. Better looping not interpolating between the sample at the loop end
and the sample after it, but a loop start sample instead.

This is my wishlist.

Subject: GM, GS, MegaEm, I have an idea!

OK, dig this - a hitlist.
Let's say you've got a new game and you're running it with MegaEm. You run
Megaem and the game. Every time a patch is played Megem ticks its number in
a table it has in memory (192 bits, we can afford it). Once we're back in
DOS (there are ways to check this) Megaem saves (discretely, the user
doesn't know a thing) this table as an .INI file, using some AI to keep the
basic 256K set installed and allow for every patch used to fall back on at
least something in its family, along with some sort of checksum for the game
(size and CRC32, dunno). AG can supply a database of common games on the
install disks.
Now, suppose we run a game that's in the database? As we press enter, Megaem
steps in (BTW, emuset will be invisible in this future idea) and loads the
patch set it has for the given game. Now, since we can't assume all of the
sounds in a game are used in a single session, the database will be updated
every time the game is run. This way we'll get the optimal patch set for any
game we run.
This IS feasible. You can create a working model in one month. It's what I
think of when I see "patch caching", and there's nothing stopping you from
adding it to Mega Em. We can even write a TSR to do it without AG's support
if we need to - you need only to monitor the MIDI port, keep a database and
feed emuset as needed. I can't code DOS, but PLEASE... somebody work on it.
Yossi.

For information on the GUS 3-CD daughtercard solution:

The problem was an intermittent lockup of the modem while using the Sony

I am running a GusMax under OS/2 2.11, and when the system is first booted, my
CD audio input is disabled. The only way I have been able to enable this is
to go into the MMPM2 CD tool, switch to digital transfer, and then switch it
off. I can then quit this, and load up Albatros to play CD's. This is very
annoying to do. Is there an OS/2 program similar in function to ULTRINIT?
If not, does anyone know what value I need to write to what port in order to
turn this on? I have the UltraSound Lowlevel Toolkit, and it makes no mention
of how to turn on the CD input...just line in, mic in, and the main output
signals.

Does anyone know to which midi controllers the Windows drivers
listen to? I asked Gravis and they don't know (?). At least the
person who answered me didn't.

The following (obvious) controllers are definitely recognised:

volume (CC #7), expression (CC #11 (I believe)), panpot (CC #10)

(anyone for more ...)

And how about bankswitching? The bankmanager can do it. As far
as I can check it doesn't use the GS standard of Roland (which
is becomming a widely accepted one). Using controller #0 plus
the usual Program Change. Would be nice to have a similar bank
switching scheme and bank management. Bank 1 (Roland counts
from 1-128) is the General MIDI bank, and Bank 128 is the MT-32
bank.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Good idea, but how about this: somebody write such a program, but
instead of tossing the # of voices simultaneously playing information
when the song is done playing, instead store it somewhere in the MID
file, perhaps in a "comments" or "reserved/free" area (if such space
exists).

Then, you only need to scan each MIDI once, to record the information.

BTW, where can I find the file specs for both MID and XMI?

At last it has happened, yes that's right Origin has brought out a game with full GUS support! And what a game, Underworld II meets Doom, explore a space station controlled by a mad computer and infested by mutants, run round corridors and bludgeon people to death with a lead pipe, but enough of that, what about the GUS support? Well it uses the GUS for the GM (excellent)music and it also has stereo sound effects. It even has it's own special patches for the GUS. Unfortunately it also supports the AWE32(spit spit) but it probably doesn't use special pathces for it so AWE owners will have to make do with their crappy built in patches (what a shame). I hope that this move by Origin means that all their future games will support the Gravis, like Wing Commander III. I urge you to buy this game if you have a high spec machine (486DX33+) it is probably the most absorbing and atmospheric game on the market.

		Happy gussing.

For those of you who want the Ultrasound Experience (see previous posts)
and the latest drivers, utilities and demos neatly packed on a CD-ROM,
buy the November Issue of PC-Zone. As a service to all such who don't
live in Britain, I phoned them up today and checked if they sent back
issues overseas. They do, and accept most major credit cards except
switch, their UK tel. no. is

I imagine the bracketed zero is dropped when you phone from abroad, but
I'm not sure. Cost of the mag is #4 here, though you might have to pay a
bit extra 'cos it's a back issue, and you'll definitely have to pay a bit
for p&p. I have nothing to do with the mag, and am advertising it purely
as a source of the Gravis Cover CD for those who can't find it elsewhere.

WELL, THERE IS A NEED FOR IT!!!!!!!! I think everyone experienced
the occasional lock up of their computer, when you can't exit a programm
anymore and you have to reset (either a soft or a hard reset) Now, I
also think some of you will also have experienced on some of those
lock ups that the music of your GUS hangs. And when you reset, it STILL
hangs. AND WITHOUT a ultrinit.sys you have to listen to that anoying
note for a long time until the gus is reset in the autoexec.bat with
ultrinit.exe. If, on the other hand, you have ultrinit.sys in the top
of your config.sys the wait is so much shorter since some of our
startups can be very long indeed.

SO GIVE US OUR ULTRINIT.SYS BACK (well beack, just include it again in
the installation disks (even if its an older version))

Does anyone know where I can get a cable to internally connect my GUS
to a Plextor DM-3028 CD? Also, how much is it?

	 Thanks

This was originally going to be a complaint about problems wih Wacky
Wheels and the GUS, but I solved it...

If you're having problems getting digitized sounds out of Apogee's Wacky
Wheels, change your UltraSound settings. I changed my settings from
220,7,7,11,7 to 220,1,1,7,5 and got all 8 channels mixed 16 bits without
any problems...

I don't know whether its the 16 to 8 bit DMA, or the different IRQs, but
since you can easily set a batch file that uses the SET ULTRASND to set
them before and after, its not a big problem for me...Just feel lucky we
have a jumperless card!

Subject: What is best # voices to set under windows?

So far, my WIndows UltraSound drivers are set to initialize the card to
play a maximum of 32 voices. I recalled that I read somewhere that the
Windows drivers automatically reserve 2 voices for the digital playback
of WAV files, etc. So, is it better if I just set the drivers to
initialize the card to play a maximum of 30 voices?
