Hey, are you serious ? You didn't say anything about 2PAT going to be
a shareware when you asked all the Ensoniq EPS information from me.
I mean, I don't want any money for it or so, but this sounds strange
to me. You surely did a lot of work yourself, but the product is strongly
based on the "shared Internet knowledge" collected by many people for
free.
Just wanted to say this.

P.S. I still have to try 2PAT, had no time yet. ;-)

Hello you British ones

I wonder if anyone could send me PC Review Oct. '94 with the GUS cover
CDROM. I would pay your expenses + some quids. (To be negotiated :-))

If you are interested please send me mail providing your postal address
and state how many pounds you would like to receive for your service. I'll
then pick someone and send him/her a EuroCheque and after you've cleared
it you'd send me the mag incl. CDROM. And please make sure the CD is
protected against damage etc.

Thanks

I have a GUS, a DX2-66, 16M memory, and *NO* trouble with Doom (ANY version)
or DOOM2, as long as I don't use EMM386. I even have the IRQ at 11, and DMA at
5. I pulled chips off of old video cards to upgrade to 1M.
Does your GUS and it's memory pass all the GUS tests? FTP the other GUS memory
testing program and use it, too. Also, if you have an AMI Bios, look for
AMISE260.ZIP on Garbo or a Simtel mirror and see if your DMA clock is too fast.
I don't have any scratchy sound or lockups. it all sounds great and kicks ass
over the SB16 here in the office. Even Linux Xdoom works great.

	Nice try.

> 1.2), sound-wise, were the powerup effect (*WHHNG* or something),

That's the GUS being initialized in the wrong way, the sound
you hear are the line level inputs and probably the mic input
opening. What I hear, is the local radio station, before I
remember to adjust the record input of my preamp.

> an optimized DMXGUS.INI which saved my poor fingers from typing

The *only* sound improvement in Doom since v1.2, and even that's
due to someone other than the guy from iD..!

> and less bass for the effects

That's due to the sound effects being mixed IN YOUR CPU, not
the GUS. This is what causes the effects to lose all bass and sound
absolutely terrible in all possible ways.

> (I have that absolute hearing thingee, so don't you go flamin' me

Gimmeabreak. My hearing is far from perfect and I notice the
difference easily even on bad equipment. My equipment isn't
bad, though, and as such the difference is so incredible I
still play with Doom v1.2, with all the nasty Hall-of-Mirrors-
	effects etc.

The software effects mixing slows it down much more than the
	improved engine code increases performance.

You're not lucky. You're just what iD wants its customers
to be - content with Doom v1.666.
I for one definitely AM NOT.

The epas submit directory, to put it mildly, sucks.

I'm not blaming anyone for this -- obviously, this is a hobby, and we
can't expect someone to monitor it full time. Can anyone think of
alternate ways of structuring submissions that would still allow some
vitality? Perhaps an approved list of submitters, so that if someone is,
for example, uploading pirated stuff, there's some degree of accountability?

Subject: GUS & CDROM problem

I've just recently got a Mitsumi double-speed CDROM. My GUS MAX manual says
it can't handle DMA channels 5,6,7 for the CDROM so I'll have to use polling
rather than interrupts. Since I have both a separate interface for the CDROM
and a SoundBlaster ASP MCD, I thought I'd use either one of those interfaces.

However despite disabling the CDROM interfaces on the GUS and making sure there
are no conflicts between it and the SB/Interface card, the GUS always cocks
things up and I can't get my CDROM to work - or rather the driver installs
okay but then comes up with 'device not ready' or something like it when I try
and do a dir on the drive.

Anyone had this problem?

Also - Do the GUS Windows drivers work for NT as well? If not are there any
available?

Cheers,

Mark...

p.s. My system is Gateway 486-DX2-50, PCI.

Subject: GUS-MAX CD-ROM interface & Mitsumi double speed?

Hello, over the weekend I tried unsuccessfully to hook up my Mitsumi
double speed drive to the CD-ROM interface on my GUS-MAX. I disabled
all IRQ's and DMA channels by removing the jumpers as instructed in
the manual (the GUS-MAX does not support DMA for double speed
Mitsumi), and installed the polled i/o driver for the mitsumi drive.
What happened is, it worked fine in DOS, but everytime I tried to
boot Windows it would just freeze with the hour glass (you couldn't
even move it), I even tried to reinstall Windows. Does anyone have a
solution to this problem? Thanks.

If I remeber things right, when you run the install program form
GUS install disks or upgrade, you have one option there which lets you
extract componets from the disks. It's on the initial menu. Should be.

Subject: I love the smell of burnt IC's in the morning...

Hi, I posted this around the time the list first started back up and didn't
get any response so maybe nobody read it. Anyway, here it is again, and
I really need some help. Even just a name and address where I can reach
Gravis at directly would be a big help. I'd hate to junk the entire board
just because one little GAL burned out.

I had a problem recently with my GUS and now that this list is back up
and running I guess I can ask here to see if anyone has any suggestions.
I turned on my computer a few weeks ago and it was completely dead,
refused to boot at all. As I sat there panicking I smelled something
burning so I quickly shut it down. After playing around a bit, I
was able to isolate the problem to my GUS. When I took it out everthing
worked fine.

I took a close look at the board and eventually found a burnt GAL on it.
I think I am probably out of warranty, but is there a cheap way I can get
it fixed? I have a rev. 2.2 board and the charred label on the chip
said "U19_01." It's a surface mount chip so maybe I could take it out
and plug in a new one. Or if I couls somehow get a hold of the file
used to program the GAL, I could pick one up and program it myself.
I guess GAL doesn't usually fail, so does that mean I have a blown
capacitor or something somewhere? Any help anyone might be able to offer
would be much appreciated. At the very least, maybe someone
could give me the Gravis email address so I could ask them about
my options. Thanks!

Well, they are using completely different mixer on MAX. It's the one
resident in CS4231 CODEC. I don't know if there is the old one still
(some lines in SDK doc could indicate this), but the new mixer has
only mono mike input, I don't know if this is a limitation of the
CS4231 chip itself or of the MAX design only. I'll have to check this
in Crystal data book. SDK doc says this:

The microphone is mono only. The left side is connected to both right
and left. This allows the recording to be the same whether the recording
is being done thru MONO IN or MIC IN. MONO IN was connected to the MIC
so that some user selectable gain could be used.

I dont't understand this, anyway. Does anyone ?
For me it's not that important to have a stereo mike, I just wanted
to correct the technical content of your message, Chris. Anyway,
the new mixer should be better (less noisy) as the old one, I hope,
but it's not for sure. I still have to get a MAX for tests.

>since the SDK has yet to be updated (correct me if I am wrong) for the

There is a version 2.21 of SDK already, covering both MAX and 16-bit DB.

Normal GUS 3.7 has some new mixer, but not the same one as MAX has.
It uses ICS 2101 chip, which has a stereo mic input. (page 87 in SDK doc).

Well, either it's a limitation of the CS 4231, or, or ... Gravis ?

Subject: some questions

I had a GUS some years ago and I sold it but now again I bought a GUS
(V3.4) which leads me to some questions.

- Where are all the PALs/GALs or whatever they were gone? Into the small
chip soldered to the PCB underneath the GF1?

- What is the "small chip" good for?

- The package claims there are add-on boards for SCSI and 16bit recording
(I knew about them before but have never seen them) and IDE CDROMs. Where
can I buy a board for controlling a Mitsumi CDROM?
Doesn't it interfere with the superb sound quality? (Mixing analog and
digital circuitry sometimes disturbs sound quality)

- Are the latest drivers released on disk V2.06? I can't believe that.

- Doesn't Gravis include registration cards anymore?

Well on Day of the Tentacle, there is no Sound Canvas option, only ROLAND,
which means MT-32 NOT Sound Canvas. The Sound Canvas is a GMIDI device, so
for a Sound Canvas GMIDI is the correct choice. If you want to hear what it
sounds like for a MT-32, use the -MT32 (?) switch on Megaem's Emuset and
select ROLAMD in DOTT's setup. Not nearly as nice.

You should use GMIDI in all games that have it, and ROLAND (or MT-32) in
those that don't.....

Subject: Win NT drivers for GUS?

Hi.

Hope this is not FAQ stuff (well, I haven't seen one in a long time anyway).

I just want to know if there are Windows NT drivers for GUS?
I think that Windows 3.1 drivers wont work, since they are 32-bit drivers
(and as we know, 32-bit Win 3.1 drivers wont work with NT).
If there are drivers for NT, then which version, 3.1 or 3.5?
If there isn't, is Gravis even considering making them? I must say, that it
should, since as soon as I get my new computer, I'll install NT 3.5 and
start programming with it. There are probably some other people too, who
would like do some sound programming with NT, since Win 3.1 and 3.11 are
really a waste of Pentiums power.
And don't suggest OS/2, because I happen to need Win environment (fe. TAPI,
Open GL etc.).

Any help appreciated!
