The patch for Dark Legions (CD and Floppy) is completed and is currently
being tested by SSI and Advanced Gravis. It should be released very soon.

By the way, its great to have the digest back! Thanks to all who helped!

I picked up a copy of (I think) PC Magazine in London (England ;-),
which had a CD-ROM with some Ultrasound stuff on it. However,
don't get too excited. As far as I recall, it was just the latest
Gravis disk set (3.53), which can be easily obtained from any
of the archive sites. There were a couple of other bits and pieces
too, but nothing like the full archive.

Is anybody considering making a CD-ROM of the full archive ?
It would be very convenient to have all that stuff sitting on a
disk at home, rather than having to ftpmail it (at work), or get
it over my poor weedy 14.4k SLIP connection at home !

Would the people at Walnut Creek be interested in doing this ?
Given the number of GUSes sold now, and the 1500 people on the
digest mailing list alone, I would guess it could be worth their
while. (I'll CC: this mail to them, just in case).

Paul.

Well, it seems that DL uses HMI-drivers for it's sound (not sure about
that). If so, we have to wait until the GUS-hmi drivers are released (when
is that?). Too bad :-(
And ssi who was one of the first companies to support the GUS directly...
We have to hope that they do like origin have done at last: Support the
GUS natively (horray for origin!).

Nice to see there exists an UltraSound World,

almost went back to the store with my GUS cause
of 'compatibility problems', but since i found a
lot of stuff on internet (upgraded finally to the
diskset v3.56), more and more software starts to
like my GUS... .I have been using the card for
just 1 week now... (previous was PAS16)...and
i'm really fund of the sound this little thing
creates.... -however- .... i did not succeed
yet to get a stable sound in my MS FlightSim5.0a
 .although choosing 'Gravis UltraSound (SBOS)'
and running SBOS (3.82 or 1.20) prior to take-off
The system just 'halts' after a minute or so, and
gives me a nice collection of errors on the place
where used to be the DOS prompt...(like Error codes
0007 and 0003, memory allocation error, etc)
Also problems with IndyCar (NASCAR Demo runs fine)
even with 'SBOS -o3' the sound is still stupid...
(like AdLib quality)...my PAS16 worked fine with
the game (FM Sounds ?!). Since the 32bit AIL drivers
were suggested...i also had a go there.... -nope-
just the sound of "Paul Page (?)" in the intro...
and further... silence all the way ...

Hope someone can help me here...

Subject: Getting CD-Audio to play through the GUS

I have had my GUS for almost 2 years (I believe because of the
vintage that it is Rev 2.4). I just got a SONY CD-ROM a few
months ago and tried connecting the CD-ROM audio output (4 wire
connector to the CD-input on the GUS. I am getting no sound
whatsoever, and on the mixer to not see any CD-input checkbox.
Am I missing something here? Before the digest quit I remember
everyone saying that this would work, would it be the version
of board that I have? I have all inputs enabled and the sound
is playing on the output jack on the front of the CD-ROM. Right
now I have a jumper from the front of the CD-ROM to the back of
the GUS, but this is a less than optimal solution. The manual
I got with my GUS does not even mention the CD-input. Could
somebody help me here? I would rather not have cables hanging
on the front of my computer for the kids to hang on.

Subject: GF2 - is it reality?

Hi all,

i know that this question shold be adressed to Gravis tech. centre, but
i think that answer to my question will be very interesting for all GUSers.
It is about new sound-chip by Advanced Gravis and Forte Technologies, called
GF2.

On CeBIT'94 i was talking to Gravis's (sale or tech) manager (i don't
remember), and obtained information that chip GF2 will be released
september/october 94. THis chip shold be used in new GUS sound-cards, and
probably will support more memory on board, higher mixing speed, and some
other features.
So the question is: few days ago i hear about a new soundcard by Gravis (i
don't know if it is frue or not), but: Is GF2 ready? If not, when it'll be
avialable. And how about soundcard? And new features?

Look at the readme files in /usr/src/linux/drivers/sound. There is a
script at the end of the README.Linux to create the proper device files
like /dev/sndstat. If you already have /dev/sndstat, try 'cat /dev/sndstat'
to get an idea of what is up with the sound driver. {wait is is sndstat or
soundstat.. Can't remember, take a look and see.} If it don't say anything
helpful, then try re-compiling your kernel. Note that you do NOT want the
full driver installed, unless you do have a pas, a SB, a GUS, and a couple
other things all jammed in.

> Try slackware 2.0.0!

Yes. Have a directory with linuxxdoom, soundserv and doom.wad in it.
What I did was make a symlink to /dos/games/doom/doom.wad to save on disk
space. While you're at it make xdoom a link to linuxxdoom to save the typing.
Then cd to that directory before you run it. No, make xdoom a shell script
to cd to the directory and run linuxxdoom. I put doom.wad and soundserv in
/root cos' thats where I usually am anyway, and linuxxdoom/xdoom in
/usr/bin/X11, but /usr/local/games/X11 would probably be more appropriate.

Subject: GUS and DOOM 2 - START AGAIN

OK. Ive heard about the problems with DOOM v.1666 and 'scratchy digital effects'

Im trying to figure if this is the same as my problem.

When I play DOOM 2 (v.1666) all the sound effects are not so much 'scratchy'
but rather they tend to echo and fade away. Like every single effect played
just repeats away until it fades.

IS THIS a design feature, or IS THIS the scratchy problems people are talking
about?

DOES ANYONE else have this same problem? WHAT are the definite soltions?
(using -gus1 switch doesnt seem to have and effect) WHAT is causing this?

Any help mailed (to me or digest) GREATLY appreciated.

I'd also like to know about any "offical" Gravis OS/2 drivers...

But I'd also recommend the fine Manley (shareware) drivers. Unfortunately,
IBM won't include his drivers in OS/2 since they aren't "offical." So, Gravis
let's get off the fence and either release your own drivers or license Robert's.

I have a GW2000 P5-60 system and I had the same problems with the midi
in when using windows based programs. The midi in using DOS based
programs works fine however therefore eliminating the theory of
suspect hardware. I tried to get an answer from Gravis and the Net but
failed to get any definite answer. At the end of the day I figured
that it was the windows drivers that were at fault.

Subject: GUSMAX Info and other related stuff

							  Hi ya' out there!

This is just a small info for all of those who are eager to know how GUSMAX
feels.

I just recently exchanged my GUS with a GUSMAX and I was a bit disappointed.
First the GUS had stereo mic in, the GUSMAX has only mono mic in. Now I can
throw out my other (cheap Radio Shack) mike... :(

I was also disappointed to see no significant developments in the software,
although I like the new mixer very much. However, the Windows driver was
buggy, so I suggest everyone to download the gus0043.zip file from any of the
official GUS FTP-sites. It fixed my problem under Norton Desktop 3.0 (the
mixer kept resetting the volumes to 0 dB). I also lost the noisy clicks and
ticks with the new driver when playing WAVs. :)

There are three things, though, for which it was worth buying a GUSMAX. First,
the frequency response of the GUSMAX is MUCH better at lower frequencies, in
other words now I can enjoy the bass-tunes on the musix and blow my neighbor's
head off with it! :)

Second, there is a CODEC chip on the GUSMAX. Hardly any programs can utilize
it, even though the GUSMAX installed a driver for it under Windows (check the
Control Panel!).

Third, it has a CD-ROM interace for Mitsumi, Panasonic and Sony drives. Since
I do not have a CD-ROM (yet :), I cannot comment on this feature.

Oh, BTW, another "drawback" of the GUSMAX: it is a FULL LENGTH card, meaning
that it is almost 12" long (I'm still talking about the GUSMAX's length >;).

Another issue:

I don't understand You guys! If You want a decent MOD-player for GUS, get
Inertia Player v1.2 (it will replace all the MOD-players in the next version
of the GUS Install Kit). For Win-maniacs I strongly suggest MOD4WIN. It is the
best I have ever seen for Windows! Truly! One MINOR problem with the shareware
version: You won't be able to use it after 30 days, even after reinstalling!
It checks the date of the CMOS... :(

Anyway, I'm happy to see the GUS Daily digest!

Oh, and I do not believe that the GUSMAX is the best card around. But it
delivers the most for the buck. :)

P.S: FTP site for MOD4WIN:

Subject: how to get my software up to date

Hi,
My GUS software is up to the level that came on the upgrade disk pack that
went to registered GUS users last year. I want to now get my software up
to date. What packages do I need. I really hope it is as easy as getting
the gus353 stuff. Is this the case, if not please tell me the appropriate
upgrade path, as it would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Nemo De Furia.

Subject: Propats 3 ?

Back in August I saw a message on comp.sys.ibm.pc.soundcard.music
announcing Propats 3.0, from 911499r@axe.acadiau.ca (JAMES ROSCOE)

For those of you who haven't heard of Propats - the following from
Bill Allen sums it up:

>Propats are a collection of large (very large) patches that can
>be used in place of the ones that are supplied with the GUS. These
>patches have obviously been lovingly put together by someone who
>cares more about the sound of music than the practicality of the fact
>that the GUS has only 1meg of memory. Most of the propats use .25 to
> 5 meg, thus leaving room for 2 or 3 instruments. By contrast the
>typical patches supplied with the GUS are 10k-60k. The supplied
>patches are acceptable in a wide variety of uses, but for real music
>they tend to be lame - listen to the Grand Piano. The initial hit
>sounds OK, but the decay is awful - it shoulds like a $30 casio.
>The propat version of Grand Piano sounds just like a GP from low
>notes to high - it's amazing.
>
>I know that I speak for most in the Music digest when I state that
>these propats are the best reason around to get a GUS with more
>memory.
>ballen@ejv.com (Bill Allen)

Now the message I saw stated that the 20-odd zip files had been
uploaded to:

archive.epas.utoronto.ca pub/pc/ultrasound/submit

The file names were: PP3-1.ZIP through to PP3-19.ZIP

I just checked the archive at src.doc.ic.ac.uk, and I cannot
see these files (the Propats 1.0 and 2.0 files are there though)
Can anyone clue me in as to where I might find them ?

Paul.

Subject: Re: SBOS error with 3.53 disk set

Hey Christian,

i had that same problem! So i just deleted all the sbos files (you
know how the install likes to have two copies, one in the %ultradir% and
one in %ultradir%\sbos?) well anyway, i deleted so i didn't have any
sbos...then i restored all sbos*.* and loadsbos*.* files. i scraped the
sbos.bat and made one myself. The one they sent with it is nice, but
with the new version it doesn't seem to work right. I suppose it's over
kill anyway! But i also make sure i don't have 2 copies..that's a waste
of my HD space. i put everything in the sbos dir except the sbos.bat
file and i have it cd into the sbos dir and run everything then cd back.
 simple? i hope so.

but sbos is working fine for me now!

Subject: SW32 and GUS MAX

Hi, gus gurus all over the world!

I have just installed a GUS MAX in my PC, os now I have two cards: an Orchid
SW32 and the MAX. As the SW32 is SoundBlaster compatible (HW, no drivers needed)
I would like to keep both cards installed. Now for the asking:

a) The diagnostics in GUS SETUP detect some problems with DMA, but the cards
seem to work fine in DOS. Is this normal, or should I have some problems?

b) Is there a way to tell Windows that there are two cards installed? I'd like
to use both cards, because I have connected the Line Output of the MAX
to the Line Input of the SW32 (I could connect the L. Output of the SW32 to
the L. Input of the MAX as well), but I need to use the mixers in windows to
adjust the levels. So far I've found that Windows claims that there is a driver
missing (either the SW32 or the MAX). I'll give you more info (i.e. SYSTEM.INI
contents) if you need it. If you have any other way to connect both cards, please let me know. Thanks a lot.

	   Best regards,

Subject: Tech Specs for GRAVIS MAX?

Hooray!

The GDD is back online! 3 cheers for the new admin, Vince!

Could some kind soul send me the technical specifications for the
GRAVIS MAX card? My flatmate is considering upgrading his rev 3.4 GUS.

I'm sure I had a copy of the specs somewhere but now I can't find 'em
:-(

Hi all,

Has anybody managed to get any sound from Dark Legions by SSI?
I've just got the CD-ROM
version, and I can't get a squeak out of it.

According to the G-List it should work with Ultramid, however I have
been unable to get this to work.
No other emulation's work either, SBOS will give some music but no
digital effects, and the game
crashes when you try and move. And Megaem won't work due to the
dreaded DOS4GW extender.
Every time I come across a game that uses DOS4GW and does not
have native Ultrasound support, I
know I'm going to be up diarrhea creek with a very small paddle.

Dark Legions seems to be a weird case. I did some routing about in
the games sound.ini and
sound_fm.ini files and the GUS is included, also mentioned in these
files along with 16 bit AIL drivers
are the 32 bit AIL drivers, its as if they were going to give the GUS
support but then though, bugger
that we can't be bothered.

When I discovered the game uses AIL drivers I though I was going to
be in luck. I copied across
gf1midi.ADV and gf1digi.ADV, as you do, and with anticipation ran
Ultramid, and, it crashed, I have
tried loading Ultramid with a number of its options also with no
success. I copied gf1gigi.ADV and
gf1midi.ADV across all of the available drivers, and tried various
combination of drivers, and the
game crashes with every one but the Proaudio Spectrum, however
with this there is still no sound.

I am using a 486DX 33, DOS 6.2, Orchid Prodesigner II graphics card
and Ultramid 1.11, my CD-
ROM is a Panasonic 562 using device driver version 4.03 and
MSCDEX 2.23. My config.sys and
autoexec.bat are as basic as you can get, so the only thing I can think
of is may be there is some
conflict between Ultramid and the CD-ROM drivers, due to DOS4GW.

I have contacted SSI here in the UK, but their technical support was
as useful as a one legged man in
an ass kicking competition, and basically said it won't work. But I'm
going to E-mail SSI in the US,
but if anyone can help me out either through the digest or by mailing
me at

K.HOSKIN@plymouth.ac.uk.

I'll be very grateful. Here are my system files

CONFIG.SYS
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
BUFFERS=25
FILES=25
DOS=HIGH,UMB
LASTDRIVE=E
DEVICE=C:\DOS\CDMKE.SYS /P:300

AUTOEXEC.BAT
@ECHO OFF
PROMPT $p$g
PATH C:\ULTRASND;C:\WINWORD;C:\WINDOWS;C:\DOS
SET ULTRASND=220,1,1,11,7
C:\ULTRASND\ULTRINIT.EXE
SET ULTRADIR=C:\ULTRASND
SET BLASTER=A220 I7 D1 T1
C:\DOS\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD000
ULTRAMID
MOUSE
D:
CD\DLEGIONS

One final thing, has System Shock got GUS support? you know being
a Origin product, and is it at
home to Mr & Mrs slow down on a 486DX 33?
