Subject: 353 woes

Actually, my experiences with the 353 disk set aren't too bad, but
there is still a problem. The install seems to go fine, but after
exiting, I noticed that no changes were made in my autoexec.bat or
config.sys. I copied the old GUS initializations, which seems to be
fine: third party programs work, windoze programs work (apart from the
 wav cutoff upon starting).
However: I can't get setgus.exe or gsetup.??? to work. Setgus just
tells me to run 'setup', gsetup returns to the prompt immediately.
The other programs seem to work (well, ok, except for the windows
applet that does voc->wav->* conversion - it causes a lovely error
message that I don't remember.)

I installed the 353 disk set in a new directory, I'm running 4DOS on
MS-DOS 5.0 (switching to the regular command.com made no difference).
The computer has had no problems with the GUS.

Could someone please mail me his autoexec.bat and config.sys for
reference? Any guesses as to what I'm doing wrong here are welcome.

I found a mail order place that sells the memory chips that the GUS MAX uses.
(Gravis does not have them in stock yet.)
You only need one: 40-pin 256k X 16 SOJ Surface Mountable DRAM 80ns or faster.
They matched there part against the NEC part # provoded by Gravis to be sure
that they are the same. The company is:

MicroProcessors Unlimited, Inc.
call (918) 267-4961
It cost US$29.90 + 7 for over night shipping. (mabey they would send it by reg. mail?)

If you need there address it is:
24000 South Peoria Ave.
Beggs, OK 74421
USA

Subject: FTP sites & 3.53 disks

There has been much discussion of FTP sites and 3.53 disks recently.
For those of us (like me) without proper ftp who have to use ftp by
email, some mention of which site and what filename for the 3.53 disks
would be appreciated.

Someone said that the uni-konstanz site had gone. I don't know about
proper ftp, but I can still use its mail-server to retrieve files.

The site at src.doc.ic.ac.uk would be great (I can actually transfer
files from there), but as someone said today, at present it seems to
be mirroring an incomplete site, so that most of the useful directories
just contain an 00Index, but no actual files.

Someone asked about disks by snail-mail in the UK. I just received an
ad from Optech. They have the GUS, plus the MAX, plus daughterboards, DRAMs,
and offer the latest disk set. Their MAX claims to already have 1MB, which
should avoid the problem of getting the memory upgrade (someone said it used
a strange chip).
I always thought that Optech seemed a little expensive, but if anyone wants
there address, then let me know.

Well, couldn't be. I did binary compares as well. Are you sure you have the
new patches installed? Check the date stamp.

Try a different brand of network card. I have seen unexplainable
problems like this one with hardware sometimes and usually just replacing
a component with a different one will solve problems. I don't care for
SMC's Elite network cards anyway.... You have to set aside a precious
upper memory block for them.... and they cost too much, too.

Keep the GUS at 220. Everything expects it to be there and it seems as
if you would be opening up a can of worms by using the GUS at some other
address. If not saying that it won't work, just that it would make your
system "different" from most others and it could cause complications.

There really should not be a problem with the network card at 340. I
think that is what I am using.

This card will probably work just fine. I had an NE2000 compat. that
would make Jungly Kitchen lock at 300h and Norton SysInfo v.7 lock at
360h. ?!?. I settled for 340h and everything is cool now. Good luck!!!

I was in a store today, saw that the MAX had arrived and was
thinking about buying it. However, the 325 Canadian dollar
price is a little steep and convinced me otherwise. Is this
$325 price the norm for the MAX or was the store overcharging.
I realise that the product just arrived, but it was only a few
dollars cheaper than the AWE32.

Hello !

I have very interesting problem
My friend and I bought two Gravis Ultrasounds V.3.73 with 1Meg

I installed my card and installation went okay, but when I
use playmidi, graphicbars in lower right corner go crazy
they blink and it looks like they are trying to get out of the
box. Music sounded at first fine but after an hour
some songs started to sound weird (e.g. bohem.mid).
Then we tried moddemo and it did't work there were continuous
high beep sound at the front and mod was back somewhere.
bad card we tought, so we tried my friends card and it
worked just fine. Even bohem.mid + playmidi sounded and looked great.

Then began the fun stuff

We went to my friends and we installed my card to his computer
and it worked fine, no trouble at all????
We tried moddemo, it grooved nicely, we played mids two hours...
NO TROUBLE !!

SO IF SOMEONE KNOWS WHATS GOING ON, PLEASE INFORME ME

THANKS

OK guys.... some _butthead_ deleted the new Gravis installation files from
EPAS's submit directory. And by the time I realize this, there has been
uploads so we can't put them back if we want to (without deleting
someone else's files....hhmmm....).

Have no fear, the gus353*.zip files can be located in our other sites
(except wuarchive) which mirros EPAS's submit directory. So you can grab
them there. (eg. for North American callers, ftp to archive.orst.edu and
cd into pub/packages/gravis/submit). And these files are not eraseable.

Subject: New 3.53 patches

I don't believe there are too many new patches in the 3.53 disk set
unless you're comparing them to the original patch set that shipped with
the oldest cards, but did anyone else notice how horrible the new
barisax.pat sounds? There's this bit of noise and popping at the end of
the sample, really awful. It was a real pain getting the old barisax
patch out of my 2.06 disks (does anyone know what compression Gravis uses
on those files? I had to reinstall a whole lot of files into a temporary
directory just to get that one patch). It would be nice if patches were
archived somewhere individually as well as lumped together a la Pro Pats
and the like. It was a real pain downloading all those files just to
find the ob8.pat also. At least the Index files on the archive sites
could list which patches are in which zip.

Subject: Odd windows stuff

Right then explain this you GUS experts. I don't use the Windows midi
stuff much, I have used it and it has worked fine. Just today I decided
to use the patch manager to audition a patch. Well when I click on the >>
button to get it to load it does nothing. Not a sossage.
So I tried loading a file into Session but it would not load the patches.
So as a last resort I tried Patchmaker. It worked fine. Now why would
this be ? I have not changed any of the windows stuff concerning patch
maps etc. Could it be due to the patch I changed or some .ini file that
has been arsed up ?

SUBJECT: problems in DOS.

Hello fellow Gusser,

Two days ago, my friend recieved his UltraSound card version 3.7 with software
version 3.11 .After installing it (and testing it successfully with the install
program) he found out that not all the dos utilities work well.
For example, in PlayMidi all the volumes (as seen on the right side of the
screen) show max volume, and the music is not playing right. In windows,
the same music file is playing as it should.
Also, GusMod is making strange noises instead of playing the MOD files, while
MODUS is playing the MOD file properly.

My question is why does everything work well in windows, and not in dos ?!

The settings we used was port 220 irq 11 (7 for sb emulation) and dma 5.
We tried to change these settings, but nothing solved the problem.
I tried my own GUS 2.4 on his computer and everything worked well, and also
his GUS 3.7 worked well on my computer (we both have software version 3.11).

Please help us !!!
