Subject: Disk set 353

I have installed all of the 3.53 disk set late last night (early
morning). Anyway, the following is what I have found out about it so
far:

	- Complete installation of new patches over the old ones (3.1f)
I'm not sure if they are better or not, but they are newer.
	- New Patch Manager that supports multiple banks, playing
samples from disk, and modifying your ini. (Really nice)
	- New windows drivers that have DMA buffering (Seem to work
	  better, especially with MOD players)
	- New GUSMOD (haven't tried it out yet)
	- New playmidi (with cool logo), and playfile (both seem to work
	  including recording)
	- New MIXER that has percentage volume labels
	- New SBOS (haven't tried it out yet either, I had 3.something)
	- New ULTRASND.INI including bank names like MPB uses

I think that is everything that I have found so far. Overall, I
would say that everyone should get this upgrade especially if you write
or listen to MIDI music through DOS or Windows. The new Windows
features for modifying your .INI file, buffering the DMA, and support of
multiple banks have already allowed me to make better use of all my
patches.

Subject: GUS 1MB-limit bane

Hi, all!
I've been GUSsing for a fair bit of time now and (like many of you
I'm sure) am becoming a trifle irritated at the 1MB limit on the GUS.
You know, either lost tracks or wrong instruments in MIDI in games. I
was just thinking, is it possible for a program (a TSR usable in
both real and protected mode) to be written that:

	1) Sets aside memory within the mainboard RAM to store patches.
The amount of this memory is user-adjustable according to the
	   resources of the machine concerned.
	2) Intercepts MIDI requests for particular instruments, checks to
see that it is already in GUS memory, if not, DMA it. It might
possibly hold a table of the most frequently used patches so
that newly DMAed patches only replace the less frequently used
	   ones.
	3) Possibly hold a compression/decompression algorithm for the
patches. This can be switched off by the user in case the
machine used is not fast enough.

Just some suggestions. I'd like to hear from any of you readers
on the feasability of this. As far as I understand, in patch-caching,
the program/game itself calls patches as it is needed. The purpose of
my suggestion is so that those that don't, can function (produce
music) equally well. I've replaced some of the original patches with
'better' albeit larger ones. As a result, I lose even more of the
music in games like Gabriel Knight. With Gravis's original patch set,
only just over half of the patches used in the game can be loaded. I
forget the exact figures. gk1.ini lists about 120 patches. loadpats
only reports 70+ patches loaded. Anyone know if these patches are
loaded in 22KHz? I think that loading them in 44KHz is a redundant
use of space.
To the programmer of gusdly10, fancy putting an ADPCM on-the-fly
compression capability in the next version? And has anyone managed to
get their hands on the MIDs for Return to Zork? Nice example of what
patch-caching can do for a game.

	Comments welcome. Phat?

Oh, yess! It's amazing.
After shuttling 8MB from EPAS to VM to Mac to PC to disk and back again, I've
installed the drivers, and let me tell you... well, wow.
The installation was very quick (write THAT down, Origin, $#%) so I thought
that nothing really changed. Well, 191 (one-a hunnerd anna ninety ONE) new
patches! Better drums with amazing basses, better slap bass, better GUITARS!
(although not by that much), a GREAT brass section (63K) and a kick-ass
orchestra hit that actually sounds like a mortar bomb hit the orchestra :)
The whole thing sounds PRO... I don't think any of my replacement patches are
going back in.
Oh yeah, and Doom sounds much better (get gus1m and it'll sound even better),
it FINALLY has an emulator front-end for newbies (you type E and that's all),
the Windows driver got its act straight, AND... (drum roll)... FULL BANK
SUPPORT under Windows. That's right! Load Patch Manager (which loads faster
now, BTW), and press the BankManager button. She-bang! You can create 1024
banks, including browsing disk patches.
Get this! Oh, yes!
The new UMax users will be in for much more fun than we had... :)
Yossi.
PS The "poor" bass response the GUS had knocked out my Sony headphones.

Subject: GUS and UMC 82C206 chipset

Hi all,

I intend to buy a GUS and after looking around for information I found out
that I might have problems, as the motherboard I have for the moment has an
UMC82C206 chipset.

Q1: What problems I might have with the GUS? Only when emulating SB, or
everytime? Could these problems be fixed?

Q2: Also, I'm using Linux. Will I experience problems in Linux too?

The configuration I'm currently using is:

VL-BUS i486/33 motherboard with UMC chipset (82c482, 82c206, 82c481)
Promise Technology VL-MIO
Cirrus Logic CL-GD5426 VL-SVGA

Is that possible to get a program in advance that will check the
motherboard?

Any help will be *REALLY* appreciated. Pls reply by mail if possible.
Many thanx in advance,

dragos

p.s. I looked for the GUS0013.ZIP file as stated in FAQ but I didn't
manage to find it.

Well, I don't know about Canada, but I called Epic a few days ago.
I ordered the pinball pack #3, and they said it should ship on the 26th.
I also ordered the MASI upgrade for the two packs I already
own. The upgrade was completely free, and they send it would be
sent out to me "soon." They didn't have this disks pressed yet.

Subject: HELP!!

I have a GUS set up with a SB16 scsi card and I am having all kinds of
problems trying to get them to get along. My SBOS works at bootup, but from
there (in Windows) I cannot get them to cooperate. Could someone who has a
similar setup send me an e-mail and tell me again what they used. Here is
the config I would like to use:

	GUS A260, I7, DMA1, Int7, Midi 330H
	SB16 A220, I5, DMA3, Int5, Midi 300H

If this works, how do I set up my drives so that all the items work
correctly together in Windows?? Right now, my Gus mixer works and the Sb16
mixer doesn't. I am not getting any sound from the SB16 unless I am in my
Finale music editor and have specifically chosen an SB16 driver. The whole
thing seems to be very messed up. I am about ready to dump all my software
out of the machine and re-install it!!! Actually, I'm about ready to remove
the SB16 card completely, but I need the compatability to the Finale. Will
an AIL driver remedy that? If so, the SB16 is history.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Subject: NEW: GUS Installation Version 3.53 Summary

Summary of GUS Installation Version 3.53
========================================

The changes here are in comparison to GUS Installation Ver. 3.11

The major changes with this version is mainly with the new patches.
Make sure if you've changed any patches that the date is not later
than 03-03-94 or 01-18-94. If they are, the installation will just
skip over these files with the newer time stamp.

The other improvement is in Patch Manager. Now, there is a new Bank
Manager for people who have been dying for the ability to switch to a
Bank of instruments other than GM.

Next, the Windows drivers now recognise GUS+DB and GUS MAX when it
is installed. Also, there is the ability to change the buffer on DMA
to a maximum of 4096 bytes.

For gamers, the new thing is SBOS 3.82. WARNING!!!! Delete
SBOSLIB.SBS in /ULTRASND/SBOS or whichever directory before you
install. The date on the installation disk is 1/2/80 so when it finds
the newer date stamp, it will skip over it. In other words, it will
not update your SBOSLIB.SBS and you get the dreaded 'Incorrect
SBOSLIB.SBS' error.
If you've already installed the new drivers and notice this error,
just run the installation again and choose 'Restore Files' and just
restore SBOSLIB.SBS
The same goes for ULTRASND.INI which is dated 4/14/94. Make sure
the date on your ULTRASND.INI is older than this. To correct the
problem is just like the above where you run install again and
recover the files ULTRASND.INI.

There is also a new ULTRAMID 1.11 which should hopefully solve
some problems.

Another new thing is that there is a batch file 'E.BAT' which
allows you to choose the emulation you want. ie. SBOS/MEGAEM/ULTRAMID
as well as show which emulation is on.

PLAYMIDI now imports ULTLOGO.BMP when it plays MIDI files. So, if
you want to change it, just use PAINTBRUSH in WINDOWS and do what you
want with it!!!

The following are the details of the new files.
*REMEMBER* The dates on the old files must be older than the ones
stated here. Be especially careful with ULTRASND.INI, SBOSLIB.SBS.

PS. I was really hoping to see a new version of MEGAEM which works in
protected mode games... alas, that is not to be. Still, GUS has
improved in leaps and bounds since it first came out. Which sound
card can claim that it can update its sound with no additional
	hardware?

$ I have a Gateway 2K P5-60 system with a GUS installed. SBOS refuses to work
$ on this system because of some type of conflict with the PS/2 mouse port.

It's neither the GW2K nor the GUS - it's the MS Mouse.EXE v9.0 on the PS/2
port that is the problem. It disables the NMI procedure. Nice of it,
huh? MS Mouse.COM v9.0 or any previous version of MS Mouse should work
fine. Or another brand of mouse.

$
$ Can anyone tell me what DOs setting should I use to use MegaEM
$ under OS/2. Or is it impossible?

It's impossible.

$ I always have to boot into DOS
$ everytime. Hopefully, the new protected mode MegaEM should work fine
$  under OS.2

Also impossible. MegaEm is as fundamentally incompatible with OS/2's DOS
Box as is QEMM or EMM386.

Subject: Serious Hissing probs

Hi gussers,

I have had my gus since November 1992. I have'nt had problems with
it much since then, that I couldnt resolve on my own. Lately I have had
with the card hissing when voices are to be played. This is primarily when
I use ultramid, in mega-em, the voices stop abruptly and sometimes my machine
would lock up. I just noticed this problem recently (I had already installed
the gus0041x.zip upgrades), and even upgrading to the gus353x.zip, still
continue to have the same problem. My HArdware settings/configurations are:

386dx25 w/ 8 megs ram (OPTI CHIPSET B 9114KVB26, NO DMA probs, before anyway)
IDE Drive controller w/ io built in (2S, 1P, 1G(disabled))
Gravis ultrasound (220,1,1,11,5) Blaster (A220,D1,T1,I5)
LPT2 Port
Cirrus Logic 5422 (1 MB)
Digiboard PC-4 (running irq-7 and A108-118)
2400 Baud Modem

Under linux I don't seem to have any problems (although I dont have any games
with voice).

Any Ideas? I can't seem to find a good configuration, and without changing had
good results before.

Perhaps since LPT2 uses IRQ5 this may be the problem? I have no printer connected to it.

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

Subject: Setup disks 3.53 and DB 16 bit

Hallo everybody:

Does anybody know if the new setup disks (3.53) can be installed over the
3.11 install version which comes with the 16 daughterboard? Is it needed to
reinstall the 16bit options AFTER upgrading the basic setup to 3.53?

Thanks, Stefano

Hint, hint; Nudge Nudge. Actually, I've always had good luck with AMD's
chips, and the Cyrix SLC's as well (although I've had people swear that they
wouldn't run TRUE 486 software, rubbish!). In fact, I'm running an AMD 386
DX-40 right now and haven't had a bit of trouble with the CPU, although the
motherboard is one of those "Broken" Opti/UMC motherboards.

However, the Cyrix 486DX series chips made last year have a major bug in the
math co-processor that only showed up in protected mode, so you might beware
there...But they have been supposedly been made aware of this bug and fixed
it....
