Is there a good player for 669s, ults, etc. in Windows? I like GLX but
it won't work in a window.

Subject: GUS/SBOS/Rebel Assault

Hi,

I am trying to get my GUS to work with Rebel Assault and SBOS 3.82.
(The native GUS support does not sound that good.)

I have tried -o2 and -o3 options.
-o3 gives no sound
-o2 hangs the system

I have a Pentium 66 MHz system with Dos 6.2.
The soundblaster variable is set to IRQ 5, DMA 1

Thanks,
Arun

I have recently installed Linux and X on my PC (major hassle, but worth it) and
was wondering if anyone knew of any decent software (and where to find it) that
will make use of the GUS. Having recompiled the linux kernel to support the
card it would be a shame not to make full use of it.

Thanx.

No need to be sorry, I thought you were just trying to determine when the
problem started! :-) I don't mind lame jokes as much as no responce.

I think it is the playmidi in a bat file that I'm using and it is a
new one from gus0041. I just thought it would be a common pat or
initialization problem that I missed in the group discussion since I
haven't been able to subscribe and must pull each digest from epas,
but I guess not.

I just thought I couldn't be the only one with this happening. Being new
to music cards, I didn't realize how tempormental they could be. (Just
bought GUS in Feb, my first music card) I hadn't thought of trying other
midi players. I guess I will have to find and try them out when I get time.
Thanks for your help.

dan

John, I think you're thinking of the *STEALTH*. This guy has the
SPEEDSTAR. The Stealth is based on a low end S3 chip, and has gotten a
lot of bad marks from users attempting to enjoy them. The Speedstar is
based on the Cirrus Logic 5428/5426 chips and is actually pretty stable.
Not the fastest Win GFX board, but probably one of the more stable
designs. I've used one and I have a clone of one right now that I have
no problems with.

Subject: MIDI questions

Hello all!

Here is my first post, so bear with me.

I have a gus with 1024k mem.
I want to hook up my Yamaha synthesizer.

Ok, should I buy Gravis' midi interface kit or
buy Roland's MPU-401 midi card?

First of all, will those 2 cards work together? In dos? in windoze?
I'm doing this to please my girlfriend, who's a music major.
Any help would be appreciated.

I also have problems with the excellent game, Return to Zork;
although in my case, I am able to play the game.
The trouble starts when I run the game with full sound capability:
SFX, voice and music on. The game crashes when I enter the first
windmill/storeroom and I have music on. If I enter the location with
music switched off, the game still plays.

I have hed the same trouble at the fool's monument when I go off to
the right to the ranch, and it's all to do with the music.

Is there anyone else experiencing the same trouble? Am I the only one?

Subject: multiple sc. patches

Hi GUSers!

First of all I would like to thank all, who answered my Lands of Lore
multiple soundcard patch location qst.

My question I. : I have midi music, digital speech but no digital
sound effects. If I choose that in the setup, I get no sound at all,
for fights, spells, etc.Is it normal? How does it work on your system?

Question II : Please inform me if there are multiple soundcard
patches exist for the following games, and of course where can I get
them from ?:
				Kyrandia I.
				Simon The Sorcerer.

Thanks in advance

Subject: PARITY errors revisited

My GUS works fine in my system except for midi-in under windows. When
I have something connected to the midi-in, I get an "OFF BOARD PARITY
ERROR" and have to reboot. This problem is erratic, it may not happen
as soon as I enter windows, but will eventually happen, usually within
a few minutes. The chipset on my motherboard is one of
those problem UMC sets (same 16 bit DMA problem as the OPTi boards),
so I use an 8 bit DMA channel. SBOS does work, so the NMI on my
machine seems to be OK (I understand that Midi-in uses NMI).
Does anyone know what the problem is?
Everything else is ok, including midi-in when I use MIDIFIER. I only
get PARITY errors with midi-in in windows.
Bummer hey?

Also, I still get skipped notes when playing midi files under windows
(using Winjammer), I have the windows drivers from GUS0039 (or was it
GUS0038?) Am I the only one with this extremely annoying problem?

Thanks.

OK-
1) I have the 16-bit DC.
2) My CDROM is SCSI-2, obviously not controlled by the GUS
3) I have 16 MB RAM.

Question:

How do I sample directly from CDROM?? What settings should I use on
SMARTDRV.EXE for caching? Do I need a TSR CD player?? Any suggestions for one?
Is USS16 the best way to go for the sampling???

Subject: UFO Music & GUS ?

Has anybody managed to get music out of "UFO - Enemy Unknown" with
a GUS ?

UFO supports the GUS for sound effects, but not music (Although the demo
supports both!)
SBOS and MEGAEM just make the game hang. Any comments on how to get this
working would be more than welcome.

Thanks,

Jon
