Hs anyone got Cannon Fodder working with MEGAEM. Whenever I try setting
the game up to use SB for FX and Roland for Music the game locks up (sort
of, it plays the music but nothing appears on the screen). Also if I just
use Megaem for SB effects the game crashes out with an error (A6 I think
it was). It's not that important as the game works with SBOS fine, it's
just that I would rather have midi then fm music.

Hi Y'all, I've just installed Microsoft Video for Windows 1.1a (note the a)
on my system, and lo - video is as smooth as can be.
I guess MS used some unorthodox playback method for digital audio, since the
update contains a new sound codec which works fine now. The damn thing still
can't sync for its life, but hey, at least it works.
The filename is ftp.microsoft.com:softlib/mslfiles/wfw11a.exe (PKSFX), sized
about 1,280K. f.m.c. is a good site for hanging out on anyway.
Enjoy,
Yossi.

I was getting something similar, but it was the cheap ghetto blaster that
I was running my GUS into. I also noticed it badly on the entertainer. I
bought some speakers without amps, and it all went away.
Try playing it with DOS playmidi with the volume low (/v or something?)
and see if it persists. It seems to me that the GUS line out is at a very
high level(at least higher than other stereo components that I have).

Subject: Gusmod and "chant" in Starcon Mod, and Logitech SMW

Recently got a GUS, fired up Gusmod in Windows with some of my favorite
Mods from Starcon2. In the "Druuge" it gives a gregorian chant kind of
sound, but misses some other music I've grown accustomed to hearing. No
other player I've tried (a bunch) does this. Anyone else note this, or
care to comment on what is happening?

As to the 2 posts referring to the Logitech Soundman Wave, I'll comment
just a bit as an ex-owner (I'm playing soundcard of the month lately).
Hope this stuff doesn't fall too far outside the charter nor lead to some
flame fest.

I wasn't too impressed with its wavetable g-midi sound. A bit too synthy
on most everything and I clearly prefered an Ensoniq-based Reveal I
compared side-by-side. I did find it more than acceptable for games and,
of course, far far better than FM. It did prove to be hassle free for
games and worked near-perfectly in the SB+gmidi role. I didn't compare the
SMW side-by-side to the GUS, but did do the GUS vs the same Reveal Wav's I
saved. I thought the Reveal won that one too, but not by as much. So I
conclude that the GUS sounds better than the Logitech to me. A bit round
about, but I'm pretty secure in that one. With some of the user created
GUS patches, who knows, maybe the GUS now moves to the top of this pack. I
love the "acguit" pat.

As to the Q about the Logitech and RAM/ROM, it uses a 2MB ROM set, no RAM.
And as far as I know, no RAM option planned. The Mediatrix Audiotrix Pro
uses the OPL4, the same 2MB ROM sample set, and will have an optional RAM
board. I don't know that RAM capacity.

Again, sorry if this is considered a digest faux pas. If so, drop me
email, and I'll cease and desist!

Hi

I was trying today to record sounds with my gus (just 8 bit, standard
model 3.4) but couldn't get anything to the comp. In USS8 when I use the
"Mon"-option, the sound going in also comes out of the speakers, but when
I try to sample it to the gus, I get zippo. All the bytes are of the
value 255. So tell me, could this be a symtom of a broken ADC or something?
The mic I tried is not necesseraly of the correct type either, maybe I
should try a different one?

I've just bought Sam & Max (CD), and I'm having a lot of trouble getting any
sound or music out of it.

Has anyone been able to get it working with the GUS? It uses DOS4GW, and
doesn't seem to like SBOS.

After finally getting Rebel Assault working in SB mode, I thought Sam & Max
would be no problem :(.

That's SOOOO silly.
First of all, the SW32 is made by Orchid. Logi's card is called SoundMan
Wave.
In addition, both cards are ROM-based, which means there's no way to change
samples or accelerate effects or MOD files.

I don't remember ever seeing a file called gusmixer.drv (nor
ultramixer.drv, which has too many characters to be a DOS filename).
Have you downloaded recent versions of drivers and mixer etc. from
ftp site - if not, then I would do so. As far as I know, mixer.exe
is the only mixer program required - you don't need any drivers with
'mix' as part of their name.

Subject: Music breaks up

I've noticed a problem with CD-Roms such as Microsoft Cinemania and others
where WAVE files play fine through windows, but longer sequences of music
break up, play intermittently. I've got an old Mitsumi single speed drive and
was wondering if this is a problem with the new Multimedia standard or if I'm
just doing something dumb.

I tried disabling the Smartdrive cache on the CD-Rom and that didn't help.

Also, I recently installed the GUS and downloaded new install software.
The few games I've tried seem OK and I get MIDI files in Windows to play OK.

Thanks for the help in advance.

posting this message in hopes I can solve a little problem I seem to be
having with 7th Guest. It seems as though the GUS (emulating the Sound
Canvas) is playing the wrong instruments from time to time. Someone on a
local BBS told me there is a fix for it. Can someone tell me what I need
to do to fix this?
		   -- Ryan Korniloff
		   -- rkornilo@nyx10.cs.du.edu

There are two patches to this game, called t7g-fix.zip and t7gfix3.zip on
wuarchive.wustl.edu or archive.orst,edu in the game directory of the
ultrasound directory. Unzip them to your id/t7g directory. Then replace
parts of your groovie.ini file with the following (install.exe might crash,
so do it manually).
;ini File for The Seventh Guest
;(C) Copyright 1993
Trilobyte, Inc. and Virgin Games
[main]
DMABufferSize=16384
TicksPerSecond=300
VideoCard=VESA
midi=GeneralMidi
pcm=UltraSound
svga=on
ProgDir=F:\id\t7g\
DataDir=G:\t7g\
Recommended=SVGA
CPU=486sx
FreeMem=616
CDbench=330
[GeneralMidi]
irq=7
port=220
xmi=gf1midi.adv
[UltraSound]
irq=11
port=220
pcm=gf1digi.adv
dma=1

Don't actually copy the entire file over your old groovie.ini, since your
system may differ from mine (as in CD bench speed, CPU, FreeMem, irq, and
dmas, etc.) Just follow the basic format where the file refers to
General midi and Ultrasound. This took me forever to figure out to rewrite
parts of the file. Be sure to load Ultramid beforehand, or the game
won't recognize your card. (Adjust the volume too with the -m switch, or
the midi music will drown out the sound effects and speech.)
The game works with SBOS too, but the sound quality isn't as clear.

Hi GUSers! I've read occasionally some post about static in GUS's recordings.
I was glad my GUS didn't have that problem, but today I wanted to record
something and blam! there it is! I got a little bit of buzz/rattle/clicks in
one of my channels. So is this an epidemic or what? I don't remember changing
anything in my setup. Any help?

Subject: Ufo: Enemy Unknown:: The scoop and a question

Someone asked about Microprose's UFO. Well, I just got the game, and
haven't had time to experiment, but here's the deal.

The demo sounds good with GUS music, as the original poster knew. However,
the demo didn't seem to actually play GUS sounds. Well, the real game's
setup program won't even give you the OPTION of GUS music. It DOES have GUS
sound, though, and sounds good.

Keep in mind that it's a DOS4GW app and, for the time being, emulation is
not an option.

Sorta sucks. I mean, the GUS's strong point isnt' its digital sound,
although that's STILL better than the sound bastard..:>

A question: Does anyone know of a patch or something for GUS music?
