Subject: CD audio cables

A while back someone posted the phone number for an outfit that will make
CD audio to GUS cables for most any CD drive. I cannot find that message
anymore, could that person please re-port that information?

I have the Mitsumi 1x drive, and although I can strip off the connector at
the GUS end and put each lead on the pin, I'd like to have a real
connector. I also have a Sony CDU-531 at work for which the cable has
long since disappeared, and I'd like a replacement.

Subject: DOS mixer

Hi everyone!

I have a 3.7 GUS. I like the mixer in windows, but is there a way to
set the levels of line-in, mic-in and CD-in in DOS? Ultrinit doesn't
list any options for setting the volume levels.

Also, is the CD-in the same level as a line-in? If so, would it be OK
to get a soundblaster, and have its output going to the CD-in connector,
so I'd still have the line-in on the GUS available?

Subject: Grabbing digital audio from CD

What CD drive combinations and SCSI controllers support grabbing CD audio
tracks directly off the CD. I have tried CDGRAB 3.2 on my Mitsumi, and
cannot seem to get it to work, it always fails with sector not found on a
Read Long. It seems my Mitsumi doesn't support this, although CDGRAB's
miniscule documentation seems to imply that it should work.

Does anyone know of some other software that can do this? Would it work
with a CD drive (any type - I'm open to suggestions) attached to a Future
Domain TMS-860 SCSI controller. I can get those for free from the old
parts bin at work. :)

Subject: GUS 3.7 and Linux (a tip)

If you have GUS version 3.7, and you want to use it under Linux. I
have a pointer for you.

I just got my GUS about a week ago and got it set up fine under DOS and
MS-Windows. This week's project was to get it working under Linux.
I spent many hours trying to get it to work, but I was having problems
getting the sound to come out. I could hear it very faintly.

Last night, the problem was solved. It turns out that the sound
drivers released with version 1.0 of the linux kernel (version 2.4
sound driver) won't work with the new mixer in the 3.7 GUS. The
version 2.5 sound driver does work. The new sound driver will
eventually be released standard with version 1.1.10 of Linux. You can
incorporate the new sound drivers separately into the 1.0 kernel.

I hope this saves some people time and headaches.

$  I plan to buy a GUS MAX too.  Everyone please give me your opinions;
$ I think if they are accepting preshipping orders of $179, the price
$ will only go down from there, or stay the same for a while. But if
$ the some people who have more experience in this than I do think
$ otherwise, I may go aheard and preorder one myself.
$
$ Please tell me what you all think.

I'll tell you what they (Computer Express) told me today. The price I was
quoted was $172, plus $5 for UPS ground shipping. They said the price
would remain the same, unless Gravis changed the wholesale cost, which
they did not expect would happen. They expect to start shipping at the
end of next week, as soon as the cards arrive. My order went out today.

$
$  Hi all,
$
$  I installed Megaem 2.02 (megaem202.zip) y'day on my Pentium, 66MHz Zeos Box.
$  I have 16MB RAM. I am running WFW3.11 (enhanced mode) and Dos 6.2.
$
$ The EMM386 manager is loaded with the -noems switch
$ I load MegaEM with the -noems switch, and emuset.
$ If I enter Windows everything is fine, however as soon as
$ I exit windows, the system hangs. I see the same behaviour
$ even if I remove the -noems switch from the memory manager
$     and megaem.
$ The same thing happens if I start KQVI from windows.
$
$ I think the problem is because megaem cannot handle enhanced
$ mode windows. I do not have a scsi controller on my motherboard.

Unload Megaem before starting Windows. It is supposed to turn off, but
WFW may do something different from plain win3.1. In any case, it will
not function in Windows standard or enhanced, so there is no need to have
it loaded.

Bingo! MegaEm is supposed to unload itself, or give you a warning if you try
to enter Windows. It will NOT work with windows at this time.

If you want sound in windows, use the Windows drivers.....

  Alone in the Dark 2 and Ravenloft both work for me now with
ULTRASND=220,5,5,12,5.  I tried 220,5,5,11,7 without success, oddly
enough. Thanks again for your help! These games just aren't the
same without sound.

Subject: Seawolf / Ultramid problems

I'm not sure if this subject has already been discussed to death, but i'm
having problems with Seawolf. After installing, i select the appropriate
digital and music sound drivers (the GUS obviously). The install program
reminds me to run ultramid.exe before loading seawolf. So after typing
ultramid i get the error:

"configuration file not in $(ULTRADIR)/midi directory"

Wassup? I've got the ultrasound files in the standard c:\ultrasnd dirctory
and don't have problems using playmidi or anything else. My config.sys file
has the line:

"device=C:\ULTRASND\ultrinit.sys ultrasnd=240,1,1,11,5"

Everything else, including megaem and sbos has always worked properly. Any
help would be appreciated.  Thanks!

 Hi! GUSers:

	I think putting this mail here may be not properly ,but I wish
 you be tolerant of me. I find that people here are so kind and
 enthusiastic ,and that's why I looking for help here.

	I am a university student in Taiwan. I want to be one of the GUSers
 but I can't afford the price here. So I decided to buy GUS from mail-order
 firm in US. At first, I send a FAX(4/5) to ComputAbility and he reply me
 quickly. After that, I totally sent 4 FAXs ,but none had its response.
 Two weeks later(4/21), I turned my order to Global Horizons and he reply
 me more quickily. Also, I totally sent 4 FAXs to it. And now, I have waited
 his confirmation FAX for about 10 days. I don't know what's wrong with me
 or him! I am sure that I fill in every blank of order in detail and my
 credit card is not one of the stolen cards. I have dreamed of GUS day & nite
 for more than 2 months. I know every GUSer can realize what kind of feeling
 it is. I know this may be some kind of rude request ,and I wish your
 tolerance again. All I want is some kind man can make a phone call for me
 and check out why my order isn't affective. Thanx a lot in advance !
