Subject: Re: AWE32

I can confirm that the AWE32 can indeed have up to 28 Mb of ram on it -
it has two simm sockets on it - thus with 2x16Mb simms (they cost over
$1000 australian each) you could get 28 Mb of ram.

Not that you would, of course.

Still, I think we should give AWE32 a bit of credit - it's heaps better
than anything else we've seen from CL, and I think a pretty good
soundcard. The internal sounds may not be the best, but with all that
ram you've basically got yourself a GUS and more.. also you have your
reverb, chorus etc... It's a nice soundcard. But too expensive
unfortunately. And anyway, I'm not suggesting it would be worth
crossgrading/downgrading/upgrading (circle applicable) from the GUS!

Subject: can't install 3.11 bonus disks!!

Hi there...

I just tried the 3.11 install' disks.
Everything's allright for the drivers, patchs, etc.. but...
I couldn't install the 'bonus disks':
I get a message telling my UltraSound can't be detected !!!!

As it is an upgrade and everything runs well with other softwares,
I wonder where the problem comes from.
Know that a friend of mine had no problem installing the bonus with
the same set of disks.... so ...... could anyone help me please?

P.S.: I'got a 3.4 Gus and deleted the old ULTRASND directory before
	  installing the new one.
Each time I try, a new directory is created on drive C: containing
	  INSTALLIT.EXE .
( just to let you know , if it can help ...)

Subject: DMA and Windows

I've configured my GUS outside of Windows and it works fine. Even IN windows
it had no problem, until now. I bought a Roland Keyboard and tried to hook it
up, but USS8 didn't recognize it. I checked with SETGUS using DOS and all the
parameters were working fine. Then I checked it using Windows(via MSDOS promtp)
and it hangs the computer when I check the DMA, no matter what DMA I choose.
I've already changed all the other DMA's I have, but the GUS won't accept any
DMA under windows, although it does make sound. Only thing that doesn't work is
the keyboard. Is this a bug on SetGUS or a driver for windows? Anyhow, where
can I get a program for composing MIDI on DOS, in case nothing else work's?
Thanks in advance. Markus Kritzler

More questions:

I'm about to upgrade to DOS 6.3. Did anybody tried this version
out? Are there any known problems/errors with memory-managers
or other stuffs from this version?

PS:
Somebody asked about qemm settings for some days. So here are mine.
It's actually for v7.04:
device = C:\QEMM\qemm386.sys RAM ST:F NOVIDEOFILL HANDLES=64 R:1
(If it still doesn't work try without the ST:F par.)
I have an OPTI-495 Mobo, with a Cyrix-40 CPU, without errors.*
(I also usee a math-co but still no problems)
*:I had errors with my GUS (IRQ timeout) ->But now it is fixed!

Does anyone else have problems trying to "get" files from the
archive.orst.edu ftp site? I notice that downloading files just seems to
hang, (as opposed to the epas, which sends files nearly instanteously).
This hangup on orst happens all the time, so I don't think it was my
server having a bad day as I try but fail to download files. If anyone
knows any settings, or solutions, please help. Thanks.

Subject: games: BK, AD2, Raven

I'm about fed up with buying and returning games that don't
support the GUS. Betrayal at Krondor CD is broke. No SBOS,
no Megaem. I've been trying to get Alone in the Dark 2 to
work with SBOS since it uses custom drivers. It locks up
after a couple minutes of play. Anyone having problems with
AD2? A call to Infogrames yielded nothing, except for revealing
that AD2 uses strange bootstrapped drivers that were added
after it was received from France.
Ravenloft uses the standard 32-bit Miles drivers (thank you SSI!)
and has excellent SVGA graphics. Unfortuantely, it locks up on
my system after a few minutes of play. All these problems only
happen with sound on. I was suspicious of my IRQ and DMAs, but
no conflicts, and since other programs like SimCity2000 run fine,
I am suspicious of the program. Are there any updated Miles drivers?
Any older ones?

I've exhausted all possible configurations: no Smartdrive, EMM,
different GUS IRQs. I'll have to return this stuff again if
these companies don't get off their tails.

I was wondering has anyone thought of making patches of the entire
GM set to fit 1 meg on the GUS. I know the quality won't be very good
(probably 8 bit 11 khz) but it *should* sound "right" for games that
offer GM music.

	Any takers?

my GUS. Anyone know why?

Subject: GUS started making noise in Windows

Hi,
A couple of days ago, I booted into Windows to find strange whirrs,
clicks, buzzes etc. come form the right speaker. I don't recall changing
anything and the card sounds quite OK otherwise. The noises start as soon
as the Windows driver is initialized and they are appearantly caused by
the electronics (screen scroll, hard drive etc.). Just like my old SB
really but everything was perfect with GUS uptill now. SBOS, Megaem etc behave
properly, the problem is clearly Windows related.
Also, is ULTRAMID useless without the AIL drivers ? How do I find out if a
game needs ULTRAMID rather than mega-em ?
Thanks,
Orcun

The GUSTALKR utility that I asked about in yesterday's digest is available
via ftp from archive.orst.edu under pub/packages/gravis/util/dos/gustalkr.zip.
It should also be on the wuarchive.wustl.edu site under the corres-
ponding directory.

Try it out and let me know if it works (it locks up my machine) and if so, with
what settings for SBOS.

Thanks.....

Subject: MEGAEM / EMUSET hoses disk access?

I am having a problem running MEGAEM and EMUSET. I've tried the
following two configurations and each time EMUSET finishes loading I
can't access the hard drive (I'm forced to power off and on):

GF1 IRQ DMA Port SB IRQ
   5 1 220 7
   5 5 220 7

The GUS is v3.7 and the software is from the 3.11 disks. Interestingly,
the above configurations do not cause any problems in Windows. I'm
using a fairly clean boot (one of multiple ones w/DOS 6.20) with the
following other hardware: COM 1 & 2, LPT 1, SCSI controller (IRQ 11, I/O
330), and a Diamond Speedstar PRO 1 MB (IRQ 2). The SCSI controller is
used for a CDROM; the HD controller is IDE.

I don't know if this is related, but the Second Reality demo hangs the
PC (cold boot) right after the rotating cube is displayed. Other apps
that support the GUS in native mode such as Epic Pinball, Doom, and
Return to Zork run flawlessly.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

		 Dear GUS Cyberspacers (???)

I am very interested in the use of the GUS towards 3D music and
Virtual Reality. Sofar I have been playing a little with the SDK 3D
kit, but last I found in the Advanced Gravis mail area on Compuserve
some comments about the use of Qsound in combination whit Soundtrak
of MCS. The comments of GUS users was negative, but Animotion
contradicted that. I am personally using CD-Master of MCS and I am

Anybody who had already experience with these products on the GUS??

GUS day people,

Just to keep you up-to-date with Sierra and the 32bit GUS
drivers, here's what I received from my source...

---------start---------

Those drivers are real close... I had to send them back for a minor revison but
we are testing them again now....

Please let me know if I can be of any further help!

---------end---------

As I said on IRC to several people, my next target is Origin
systems. If I could make Sierra move, then I'll give it a try for Origin.
So, until then, don't sell or return your Sierra games! Soon, the wait
