A few more problems I just noticed after my gus0041 installation:
 
1)  Tremolo strings are gone!  The default.cfg mentions them, but I don't
	have the patch file anymore.  Does anyone know where I can get it,
	without breaking out my old disks again?
 
2)  The gunshot still sounds like a ring whistle; how do I remedy this one?

Exactly HOW and WHICH file do you edit to get more than 4 channels in DOOM?

Also, anybody know when the new version of doom is coming out which will
support the GUS better than v1.2?

My problem with doom 1.2 is that whenever you shoot the acid barrels, the
explosions are messed up.  I know its a problem with 1.2, since using the
exact same set up, 1.1 works fine.  ANybody else have this problem?

Well, here's another happy GUS user.  I just got mine yesterday (1meg).  I
had a PAS16 (good card) but like the GUS a lot better because of greater
compatability and the wavetable (far superior than fm).

I'm having trouble getting sound out of sc2000.  I read the readme and did
what it said (sbos, no memory managers) but that didn't work.  SB sound
would be ok, but SC2000 has support for roland cards, which would be
better for music.  Anyone know of a way to get sound out of this game?  

What are some good, stereo, midi's?

Is there a, or will there be a, SBpro (or any stereo sb) emulator
available for the gus?

Mods don't seem that special anymore because of the way this card works.

Some games I've run across use synthesized sounds for some sound effects. 
These come out sound wrong with megaem.  One example is the doors in
Xwing, another is the car and driving sounds in stunts.  These no longer
sound the way they should, instead they sound like an instrument (hitting
the ground in stunts (from a jump) gives a drum sounds).  Is there any way
around this?

Oh, and Raptor works with channels set to 32 without any slowdowns.  So
does doom, but I think it's a little slower.

Are there any midi players (for DOS) that allow one to play a wildcarded
amount of midi's?  (Or is there an option for this in playmidi?)

Notice how the GUS does MPEG compression on board (somebody said) and 
that it can process sound without loading the CPU.  So does that mean 
that the GF1 chip is a DSP?  If it walks like a DSP and talks like a DSP, 
why isn't it fanfared as such.  It doesn't seem that Gravis is 
advertising much on this feature, but that Creative and now a whole bunch 
of other B rate sound companies are saying they have DSP for QSound, 
voice recognition, and stuff. 
Which brings the question, will Gravis make a full-featured Voice 
recognition program to take advantage of any GUS hardware?  
And wouldn't it be cool if Gravis came out with a board, maybe called 
UltraSound II, that has FLASH EPROM to load patches quasi-permanently, so 
that we wouldn't waste hard drive space, but at the same time allow updating 
patches (of course also retaining the RAM to load special effects patches 
and such).  Please don't spread this as rumor; just my imagination running.

Gus sounds incredible with Microcosm by Psygnosis.  The only problem 
though, as the manual described, is that the Gus can hang.  It suggested 
getting updated drivers from bbs, ftp sites (I assume Ultramid), but the 
CD came with Ultramid v1.09, and the install disks v3.1 had Ultramid 
v1.08.  Has anyone seen an Ultramid v1.10 then?

I though AG fixed that bug... 8-s
It's just a bogus subdir created while the installation ran.  Ignore it.
Better yet, delete it.

PS If anybody cares, I've downsampled the PROPATS brass section patch to 22.05
   KHz, thereby reducing its size to 65K.  I can upload it to EPAS if somebody
   else needs it.

The new SBOSes and Mega-Em deliver Falcon 3.0's digital sound effects
just fine.  I'm not sure about 3.02, but I assume that it uses the
same audio drivers and thus should pose no problems.  Be aware that
to get digital sounds in Falcon requires that you have sufficient
EMS.

The new mixer can be found in gus0041a.zip and gus0041b.zip.  Unzip
them to floppies, remove any volume labels from those floppies,
delete ultrasnd.ini and your SBOS files from your HD, then install the
new stuff over your 2.06 or later installation.  There will be a Save
button on the new mixer to save your defaults.  Also, to get the
adjustable CD volume input, you need to have a revision 3.7 or later
GUS.

The GUS does not have any onboard facilities for MPEG audio or video.
PC Mag can't get _anything_ right, apparently.

Trying to get the GUS to work with SB demos is a sure road to premature
hair loss.  If an SB demo works on the GUS, great.  If it doesn't, just
live with it.  Rest assured, though, that SB users have to go without 
good demos more often than we do.

Actually, that digest was one of the more enjoyable and informative
ones I've read due to that article, which wasn't really about Creative
Labs, but about audio synthesis, past, present, and future.

Hi,
I recently got the replacement patch files for the Xwing and found that
while it all works great with 256K 22khz, when switched to 768K (i.e. 44khz
sample rate (I got some RAM form my VGA card :) )) certain patches change (e.g
the welder, explosions etc.) into meaningless bleeps and blops (proper
instruments I believe, but not what they are meant to be) !
How does this happen ?? There's only one ini file i.e. one patch list !
How come the instruments change when you upgrade memory ?? Where's that
'other' patch list ? And how can I prevent that ? I want to hear that
music at 44khz! (btw, megaem -mem2 doesn't help this.)
Another question: Is the SBOS Adlib emulation meant to be sh***y ? the
digital sounds are fine (I used to have a SB) but the adlib sounds anre
definitely not they are meant to be. Engine sounds, some explosions,
percussion effects in music sound very off. Any way to improve (I got SBOS
3.71).

Hi everyone, I fixed the problem with mega-em not being able to work with 
my CD - ROM drive.  Just in case anyone else had the same problems, be 
sure to disable DOS 6.2's smartdrv.  Once this was done, I could access 
my CD drive while megaem is resident.

While the computer is turned on, there's an occasional click which comes
through the speakers (or short boom actually)   It sounds the same as when
i pull the plug out of the microphone.  This happens regardless of whether
i have the input line or the microphone line plugged in, or enabled, but i
haven't checked whether it also goes out through the line-out.

I'm not sure what is causing it, i've taken my computer apart and made
sure everything is seated correctly and configured to non-conflicting
addresses, irq's and dma's.

Any suggestions as to what may be causing this will be appreciated.  The
system is an AMD486DX40 with 256k cache, 16 megs ram, 350 meg connors ide,
80 meg maxtor ide, both fdd's, colorado 250 tape, ATI Mach32 ultraPro+,
vlb IDE controller, answering machine at 0x220, 2400/9600 fax/modem on
com2, 14.4/14.4 faxmodem on com1, bus mouse (irq2), and the gus 2.2 with
ULTRASND=220,7,6,11,5

Okay, so SBOS is supposed to work with Rebel Assault.  I tried it and 
used the Rebel launcher rebel.exe to detect the SB emulation, but it said 
it couldn't detect the port address, irq, or dma.  I then tried running 
the program anyway, and the game plays, but no sound comes out.  Can 
anybody tell me what settings worked (I used 220, 1,1, 11, 7, and then 
dma 7, and then SB/midi irq 5 as well).  Any switches for SBOS (of v3.1 
install disks)?

	I'm going to be getting some speakers in the next few days for my 
GUS and my $300 SONY Top-of-the-line CAR DiscMan Portable CD Player and I 
have been thinking about going with either the SONY SRS-D4K 3 Piece or 
the AR (Acoustic Research) Powered Partners 570 Speakers but I'm not sure 
if the SONY SRS-D4K are as good as the AR's or not and how much better 
will the SRS-D4K's be compared to their lower SRS-D2K 3 Piece model... I 
would appreciate any comments or opinions on the SONY SRS-D4K compared to 
the AR Powered Partners 570s like what are the advantages/disadvantages, 
sound quality of either of them.... Thanks...

  I've been getting a "Too many block devices" error from my
config.sys when it gets the device "ultrinit.sys".  The line
looks like:
  DEVICEHIGH /L2:....  =c:\ultrasnd\ultrinit.sys ultrasnd=220,5,5,7,7

Any ideas?
This started to happen a few months ago, even before I upgraded to
the 3.1 install disks.  I've also run the Gravis Setup program and
let it do the work, but the same thing happens.  StarCon II doesn't
run with sound, and I've found that this is the culprit.  Other
programs run without complaints, though.

Sorry about the length.  But evidently you didn't read it very far - it
really wasn't about "SB garbage" at all, although it did start out with some
history.  I posted it cause it's about the cutting edge in synthesis - 
perhaps what will eventually supercede wavetable synthesis.  They're talking
about writing formulas based on a physical model of an instrument.  I was
just thinking, if I wanted to synthesize some truly realistic country-style
fiddling, for example the song "the devil went down to Georgia", on the GUS 
how would I do it?  I'd have to have a set of several
different violin samples, not just the one GM sample.  There would have to be
a separate sample for those aggressive attacks when the violinist would be 
using more force to start off a note.  And a separate sample for the case when
the violinist switches from bowing one direction to bowing the other; that one
would get used a lot for fiddling because there is so much sawing back and 
forth.  I'd also have to use pitch bending liberally, but with accuracy there 
as well, not just using the linear controller fills that Cakewalk provides.  
It would be a patch job at best.  So it is clear that we need an entirely
new paradigm that has more in common with the physics of the instrument itself 
and the playing style, rather than being based on the concept of notes on
a staff.  It sounds to me like they're onto something with this so-called
waveguide synthesis, although probably it still could stand for some more
improvement.
