The reason why CL named it AWE32 is because you'd be in AWE after spending
so much money on a stupid wave table card....

MY joystick jumps to the right and down every few seconds ever since I
upgraded to 5.0a. This was evidnet in the very first edition of FS5 when I
used Digital and SBOS. Before, there were sound problems. Now they have
disappeared and the joystick problem re-appeared with in Digital mode and
using SBOS.

Hank, and anyone else who cares:

GK uses Sierra's new 32 bit code or whatever. When they made it, the gus
32 bit drivers were not available and they have not altered their
in-house code to incorporate the GUS 32 bit drivers yet. The sierra GUS
drivers will not work at all because the only ones out there are for
their older games with the 16 bit game engine. If you've used the
sierra-gus install thingee, you've got to reinstall the entire game
because it altered the code, and it's incompatible. The only way to get
GUS sound through GK is by using Windoze, which would really suck.

Except for the lack of GUS support, it's a great game. I sent it back to
Sierra though, because they haven't gotten off of their butts and put in
any gus code. Jerks.

It would work as you expect it to, if everything's set up properly.
Be sure to use the new ultrinit.exe (version 2.18 or later).

You can still use Mega-Em if you turn off its SB emulation.

Unless you use only 14 voices, the PAS16 will play 44.1kHz WAVs better than
the GUS. The PAS16 will also have the edge playing stereo WAVs. WAVs
must first pass through the GUS' GF1, while the PAS16 has a DAC dedicated
to just WAVs. The number of active voices will thus have an impact on
WAV quality on the GUS.

However, MODs will sound better on the GUS if you're using a player that
uses the GUS correctly. The GUS will interpolate and oversample the
8-bit samples in MODs to 16-bit resolution and 44.1kHz, cleaning up the
sound and getting rid of high frequency noise that you'll hear from the
PAS16. You probably need to get a better MOD player for the GUS, or look
for MODs with higher quality samples.

This wouldn't be the first time that a game with GUS support fails to
mention that fact on its box, or that GUS support is completely overlooked
in a magazine review. Seeing as how several people have already commented
on the GUS support in Hired Guns, GUS support is apparently in the game,
but not on the box. Write to Ocean and PCFormat and tell them that you'd
like GUS support mentioned where it exists.

My point was that are you sure you're using the _new_ ultrajoy.exe in
gus0041? The install program does _not_ always correctly copy over
newer files (witness the ultrasnd.ini fiasco). If you've ftped an older
ultrajoy.exe (ftp does not preserve file time stamps) or have touched
its date in any way, install might not recognize your ultrajoy.exe as
being older than the one in gus0041 and thus not copy the new one on
top of it. I recall that the initialization bug in ultrajoy.exe has
been corrected in gus0041, so it shouldn't be giving you any difficulties.
If, in reality, the bug still exists, then Gravis should be notified.
I should check ultrajoy out myself, but my current hardware setup is
not like yours. So, if you can Restore ultrajoy.exe (using install.exe
on your gus0041 disk) to your \ultrasnd directory to ensure that it's
the latest one, then run it after ultrinit.exe to see if it hoses your
GUS, I'd appreciate it.

Phat.

Change your GF1 IRQ from 11 to something less than or equal to 7 (e.g.,
5, if it's available). DOOM 0.99 and 1.1 do not support high IRQs at all,
while DOOM 1.2 frequently locks up if you use the high IRQs.

Do you guys think you can get Sierra to support dynamic patch caching
instead of preloading the GM patches? Their games would sound much
better that way. Support for patch caching in their Windows games
would also be nice.

gus0040.zip has been superseded by gus0041.zip. gus0041.zip has been
split into gus0041a.zip and gus0041b.zip, I believe, so that it can
fit onto floppies.

Subject: Hired guns and gus

Me again! (I actually might start posting to this on a daily basis - grin!)

As for the queries regarding Hired Guns in the U.K. not having GUS support,
well this is true. Hired Guns and Microcosm both shipped earlier in the U.K.
without GUS support. Why? Because Psygnosis U.K. wanted the game released.
Psygnosis U.S. wanted GUS support and would not accept the games without. So
hence, you have two different versions of the game.

Brad Craig opened up our London development office back in January in order to
service the developer needs. Last week he hosted a Gravis seminar and about 80+
developers showed up. Less than half of the developers in attendance had
WaveBlasters, while 100% had UltraSound's. Brad had them fill out some
questionnaires about Gravis, our products, support, etc, and will give us
results in a couple of weeks. Right now the GUS is doing great over in Europe,
much to our delight!

Also, with regards to the internet messages about DataQuest (they said we sold
less than 10,000 boards last year), well we know thats false because our
registered user database has way more than 10,000. Plus, our serial numbers for
the GUS have been in the six digits for quite some time. Lets lay this one to
rest. O.K? DataQuest?? ---where the heck did you get your figures??!!

Also, anyone know how GUS is with Alone in the Dark 2? What soundcards does
this game support? I cannot find it in Canada yet.

Thanks!

Does anyone know if a new version of MegaEm has been released (since the
one found in the most recent upgrade ZIP files)?

I have an SB v1.05 in my machine, and when I load up MegaEm with SB emulation
on, I don't get any sound from my GUS or my SB.

I know you may be wondering why I want to do SB emulation even though I have
an SB, but I was just wondering what it sounded like since I heard on here
that it was better.

Also, are there any other GUS programming kits besides the GUSSDK201? Thanks!

Subject: More on GUS and SB

When reader the docs that came with my GUS it sounded like that a GUS and
SB would fry each other or crash if put in the same machine at the same time.
Are there any special settings you need??? 'Cause a place here i Mtl is sellingSBPros for just $78 CDN. So since a few games I've gotten latley just don't
work ie. QFG4 and Rebel Asault I might pick one up but I find the GUS so
superior to the SB and most other cards it would be a shame. But I was told
that the SPA is trying to a have a standard driver which detects sound cards
and all companies would have to use it to fix these compatability probs with
many many cards. If anyone can clarify this point mail me 'cause it never
hurts to keep ones channels open...

The new 32 bit AIL drivers for SIERRA is not available yet... for
now, just run it under windows set up to the general patches with
regard to your memory. (As it does not patch cache)... For further
help, just read the ULTRASND HELP file under windows.... (should be

The patch kit your friend mentions will only work with old SIERRA

GUS day people,

I have a bad news about the future of the G-List. As you can see
in my signature, I'm graduating soon (in April). I will probably lose my
Internet access, but that's not for sure. So far, it looks like I won't
be able to run the list afterward. We're facing two possibilities here:

1 - The list dies. Will disappear from the net.

2 - Someone takes over or starts a new one using the G-List's information.

Personally, I prefer the second option. I want this list to still
help GUSsers around the world after I leave.

Any takers? Send me information about you. How is your knowledge
about the GUS ('cause you'll receive mail everyday from people who need
help)? What are you going to do to the G-List? Will it be posted at the
same usual place? etc...

Hi all,
I was wondering whether anyone has done any patching for the sound effects in
Wing Commander I. I just bought the game (yea, I know it's old, but it was

I guess it's a similar problem to the engine sound effect in X-Wing. Any help

Hi folks.
I've downloaded XMI.ARJ from EPAS. It's very cool, has lots of sound ripped
from games and all that, plays using UMid BUT - I can't do anything with this
music since I only have 1 player.
I've looked into these XMI files and they're like nothing I've seen before -
no MTHd, no MTRk, nothing. Long XDIS&DAT strings.
I'd assume this is the native MIDPAK format (I had to use gf1midi.adv to get
it to work), so I'd assume there should be a means of turning these XMI
files into standard Type 0 or 1 MIDI files and back.
Has anybody seen such a thing? These files are very good and they deserve a
place in my Juker playlist (122 and growing).
TIA!
Yossi.
