I got dmpython.zip from the /submit directory on epas, but i cant seem to
find this "DMAUD.EXE" program necessary for changing the sounds. Any direction
would be appreciated.

Anyone out there in Gus land understand why I can't play any games that involve the use of Dos4GW? I don't know if it is sound card conflict , or hardware, cuz if it is other-wise software related , I don't get it! Im running Dos 6.2, Qemm 7.3 w/ stealth and doublespace. Diamond speedstar 24x 486DX 50! I have never gotten Comanche, Syndicate, Mortal KOmbat, plus much more often lately. No one seems to understand whats up, can anyone out there give me a hand? Thanks.

I suspect this has been happening to me too. I think it's because a Windows
screen is mostly white while PLAYMIDI's is mostly black, and since the beam
scans more as well for hi-rez mode you get much more monitor disturbance.
I also tend to hear scrollbars and my HD when under Windows.
The solution? Well first of all open the mixer and make sure you've muted the
mic in. This will unfortunately pop open every time you run Windows. Then,
get some aluminum foil and baking paper and try that strange audio protection
that got described up here.

No, the 16-bit recording daughtercard hasn't been released yet.

Don't worry. There is nothing wrong about a 768kB GUS. All GUS software
detect the amount of GUS memory by testing individual 256kB banks, and
will correctly detect 768kB. Mixing memory speeds doesn't cause any
problems either, as long as the access times are 100ns or less.

Size isn't the only problem. The pin orders don't match either.

A person (Alan H. Perry) emailed me recently that CD audio cables can
be found at Best Buy for a variety of CD-ROM drives, so you might want
to check them out. The GUS' pins are LGGR (and RGL on the 2nd CD input
on some newer GUSes), while I think the Mitsumi's are RGLG.

WOWII is a complete waste of a GUS as it does all its mixing in software
instead of using the GUS' hardware and DRAM. I'd avoid it.

A couple of other good players are:

Ultra Tracker 1.50 - It's really a composer, but can also load and play
MODs, 669s, FARs, and MTMs as well as its native ULT format. MOD-type
   musicians should check it out.

Metal 023 - It's tough to decide whether Metal sounds better than MDP or
vice versa. MDP does play one module with no clicking that Metal
can't play without clicking, but Metal sounds slighty better than
MDP overall, IMO. Metal's surround sound effect can also enhance
many MODs (such as guitar.mod). Just be sure to use the -v switch
to reduce the volume if Metal's output is overloading your
   audio equipment.

Both Metal and Ultra Track can be found on Epas in its submit directory.

Patch Map editor? You mean MIDI Mapper? Just use the Ultrasound
MIDI Mapper setup (not Ultra xxxk as they are only for non-caching
apps) and make sure that all the Active boxes beside the channels are
checked.

The differences in sound quality are due to the number of active
voices (Playmidi uses 20, by default while the active voice setting
in Windows is usually 22 or greater), and the volume curve (the
current Playmidi uses a log volume curve while the newest Windows
driver can use either a linear or a log curve).

The number of active voices can be changed by the -xnn (where nn is the
number of active voices) switch for Playmidi and through the Control
Panel Drivers Setup dialog for the Windows MIDI driver. The log/lin
option is also selectable for the Windows driver through this dialog,
and well as the high-fidelity/conserve memory option (which is another
factor affecting sound quality -- Playmidi only loads the patches at
8-bit resolution if they won't fit in GUS memory at 16-bit, while the
Windows driver will always load them at 8-bit unless it's in hi-fi
mode).

The new drivers support large samples in patches, linear volume, new
functions that Patch Maker requires, and some other things.

> I am still not sure if I put all these new files were they are supposed to

To install the new drivers correctly, unzip windrvs.zip (found in
pmak110.zip) into your \ultrasnd\windows directory. Then edit Windows'
system.ini file and add the following lines to their appropriate
sections:

	   [386Enh]
	   device=d:\ultrasnd\windows\grvsultr.386

	   [Drivers]
	   wave=d:\ultrasnd\windows\ultrasnd.drv
	   midi=d:\ultrasnd\windows\ultrasnd.drv
	   midi1=d:\ultrasnd\windows\ultmport.drv
	   AUX=d:\ultrasnd\windows\ultrasnd.drv

after deleting previous occurrences of lines that point to grvsultr.386,
ultrasnd.drv, and ultmport.drv. (Use the correct drive and path for
your setup.)

Then copy the _new_ ultrasnd.ini to your \ultrasnd directory, and edit
all the PatchDir fields (there should be three of them) to point to your
\ultrasnd\midi directory (specify the drive and complete path). It is
also recommended that once you're in Windows (editing the system.ini
file should be done outside of Windows, to be safe), you go into the
Control Panel Drivers Setup dialog and enable Linear Volume, and
set the volumes using the new GUS mixer (recognizable by the save button).
That's it.

There's a reason for that... You notice the reference to Fred Ford
and Paul Reiche III in the credits? That's because FreeFall used the
graphics and sound libraries developed by Fred and Paul for Star
Control II. They would have had to go out of their way to NOT support
the GUS! :)

Subject: Help with SB + GUS (my post yesterday was empty... OOPS!)

I'm having lots of trouble getting my ancient Sound Blaster 1.0 to work
with my GUS.

I installed the SB on the new defaults (its own defaults were different,
but I used the current standard default) of 220h IRQ 7 DMA 1.

I moved my GUS to 240h, DMA 5, DMA 5, IRQ 11, IRQ 5

When I want to use the SB I do an:

SBOS -L -O
SBOS -L -O -F

I hooked the SB out to the GUS line in...

Now, when I do the above, I can use the Sound Blaster for FM music only.
When it tries to play a digitized sample for any reason it hangs the
system utterly.

My system has also been hanging at random odd times for no known reason.
All I know for sure it that it didn't have this problem before I put the
SB in.

There's no hardware conflicts that I'm aware of, and I moved the GUS and
SB to totally different settings whenever possible, but there's no getting
around the fact that the GUS software assumes an SB DMA of 1, and the
physical Sound Blaster also has a setting of 1.

I think on this generation SB I can change the DMA setting, but wouldn't
this just confuse any applications? Most of which assume IRQ 7 DMA 1 base
220h?

Advice? Suggestions?

I'm this close | <-- see the space between the top and bottom? to getting
rid of the thing and selling it to a friend who doesn't have a soundcard.

If Sierra/Gravis get their act together and make it possible to play the
new games without a real Sound Blaster or other non-hacked sound source,
then I'll probably do just that.

Meanwhile the only way I can play Quest for Glory IV is with a real SB as
neither the Windows nor the DOS version will work otherwise. (Windows
works, but it's so buggy it craps out every time I get anywhere... And
it's S-L-O-W)

Thanks...

A recent post said that they couldn't get Mortal Kombat PC to work in a
system with a GUS and a SB as they would get a could not initialize sound
card error. The only way I have found it to work (as well as with many
other games) is to boot up and run SBOS and then de-install it to reset
the registers, then warm boot (I usually use the soft boot that came with
the GUS disks) and then run MK with only the SB selected. I hope that helps.

What are you using to try to play the files? Certainly, if there
is a chance that you are sending output via MIDI Mapper, then make
sure that channels 11-16 are checked in the MIDI Mapper setup.
If you are using MidiSoft Recording Session, then configure
MIDI output to use either 'General MIDI' or 'Don't use multimedia
drivers...' (i.e. MIDI Mapper) Sorry I can't remember the exact
words. It also has setting for e.g. 'Extended MIDI' which doesn't
use all the channels.

Try adjusting the 'conserve memory' thing, and the 'number of active
voices' in the Windows driver setup. Best sound is when you don't
conserve memory by loading pathces as 8 bit, and with 14 voices,
but you may need more voices to play all the simultaneous notes in
your MID.

>Where can I get the new GUS MIDI driver for Windows...?

There are some in gus0035.zip and in pmak110.zip on the archive sites.

>...several questions about where to put pmak110.zip files...

ultrasnd.ini is read from \ultrasnd (more accurately, the place that
the DOS variable points). \ultrasnd\windows may well have a copy,
but it is not used - I treat it as a backup copy, in case I mess up the
real one while experimenting. The drivers themselves (.386 and 2 .drv's)
are usually installed from control panel. This process uses the oemsetup.inf
file to work out what to do, and results in them being copied from wherever
they are to \windows\system. You can move them subsequently,
provided that you adjust the entries in system.ini to match.
Someone mentioned dll's. I've forgotten about these, but the general
rule is that if an .exe needs to use some dll's, then they must be
either in the working directory (same as the .exe), or somewhere on
your DOS path.

And finally - PLEASE post music and MIDI stuff to the Musician's Digest.

Subject: SB sounds and Megaem

I recently upgraded to newest version of Megaem 2.02,
thinking that I would finally get digital sounds from
LucasFilm games. I have both Monkey Island II and X-Wing, and
the MIDI is great! But in terms of getting SB sounds, I'm
stumped. Example: X-Wing I can hear the Xwing's come onto the
screen(swoosh), it sounds real good; but when they start
firing and hit their target, it sounds like "Ploooop". So I
get out of the game, and turn off the EMUSET -off. It (2.02,
unlike previous versions) gave me an error message like:
Failed to detect SoundBlaster IRQ/Port. I have all the
environment setup for the GUS set-up properly in my
autoexec.bat and config.sys. So I tried to do it manually on
the Megaem command line as the instructions said to do so. Are
LucasFilm's games looking for a different IRQ than is usual or
what am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated. Please
reply via email.
